1973 240z: Epic.Movement (56k You can Try)

Background: I'm 17 live in Stockton, CA currently a high school student ( Class Of 2008 ftw!! ) and i love Z cars specifically the s30 series. This is going to be a project for my senior year i have to do, but i was going to do it anyway. I had trouble actually getting the car because of lazy people that don't do what they say. But in the end i finally got it.

 

Plans:11/13/2007- Get hatch open, clean up spare tire rust,look for a hatch lock with keys for sale ( anyone here??).

 

Work Done So Far: i did everything i planed to do today.

Plans: Remove Bumper (front),Remove Bumper (rear),Remove and Paint grill,Re-locate License Plate,Remove Window Regulator (driver Side),Remove and paint hatch strut.

 

Work Done: Removed Front Bumper, Removed Rear Bumper, Re-Located License Plat,Remove Window Regulator (no pics)

Today was a good day lots of work got done.

 

Work Done: moved into garage, on the evil jack stands everyone like, seats removed, center console removed,passenger 1/4 glass housing removed, passenger side window regulator remvoved, passenger side fender + head light bucket removed, windshield wipers removed, windshield access panel removed, radio deck removed, side molding (in the process).

 

Pictures: Got to dark will post in the morning ( have to take some )

Today i did a large amount of work only to find out the p.o of this car was a complete moron or just didnt care if he died or not.

 

I didnt get a chance to get pictures of the before and afters because i got cought up in the "just get it done" mood.

 

I will have some tomorro i hope. and a full write up of what i did for the 4 days of no updates.

Got out of school early today so i could do some work on the car.

 

Work Done: well in the process removing drum brakes and strut assembly.and carpeting front floors.( im stumped on how to get the spindle pins out ( i think thats what they are) ) any help?

Time for an update.

 

Work Done: removed windshield, removed both door windows,removed both glass frames(?), cleaned the floors ( 3 tiny rust holes ), carpet (hatch has to be redone (some other time), stero placement,seats are out(looking at pick n pull to find some nice ones),and umm...i think thats it. I went under the car on the stands and there is virtually no rust any where except the 3 holes in the floor other than that the only places are the doglegs and thats it. i dont want to have bad carma by saying it basically rust free but its looking like it is.

 

I dont work on it alot because i have been busy with finding a job and other things. But mostly looking for a job.

Things have been going "uber" slow. Its raining and cold and i'm out of money. I'm going to the casino for my first time in 2 weeks. I'm going to be 18 one Dec 14th. yay me. So yeah thats were I'm at as of now. Oh and i'm taking my struts into my welding class next year and I'm going to try and follow AZcar's write up on converting them to coil overs.

I had a good work day today my youngest brother "wanted to" help me work on the Z. While he took out the coolant hoses i was underneath the Z day dreaming and almost fell asleep. Creapers are comfy. We also took out the taillight panel thing. Now we are waiting for the pizza to come out the over. Fun day of work for me and him. More for him because it was a learning experience and fyi he is 10yrs old.

Had a complete turn around. I am now going ls1. Why? Just the fact that i can get any parts with out ordering them.

 

Got the new fender installed and but the front end back together.Still have a few places of the body that needs attention. I still have to find the rear strut assemblies with working brake drums and i need the e-brake cables that run from the spit and then seperate to each drum. Then its off for paint prep. Colors im going with are between artic white and alpine white im nut sure yet but when the time come i will be ready to chose.

Update: I just keep working not thinking to take pictures. Well now i took that fender off the passenger side, and replace it i also replace the passenger side door and headlight housing, I changed out the weather stripping, i got my fuel pump working 5 minutes ago, and i welded my center console back together. Will post pictures after school tomorrow.

Picture update.

 

I changes the plugs, changed the oil, changed the oil filter, removed the ac unit from the engine bay, and bought gas. I still have to take out the hoses and everything from the ac. I'm going to wait till tomorrow to do it.

2nd round of trying to fire it up today failed. I'm getting spark and gas gets to the what i think is the fpr and stops.I havn't tried removing the hose from the fpr yet and seeing if gas is flow through it. I will check that tomorrow. All the plugs are dry after each attempt so i'm thinking there is something happening after the fpr.

Okay today was the first time i ever heard the car run these videos show the first actual run but it dosn't stay running. I will have to get video of it staying running after i get back from the pick n pull. -50 weather on rocks at 8.30am. Sorry for the quality only had my cell phone on me.

I'm getting spark and gas gets to the what i think is the fpr and stops.I havn't tried removing the hose from the fpr yet and seeing if gas is flow through it. I will check that tomorrow. All the plugs are dry after each attempt so i'm thinking there is something happening after the fpr.

 

What i thought was the fpr was actually the mechanical fuel pump. Thanks Paul R. for the help with that one. I feel so dumb.

Went to the pick n pull today and got the window roller, windshield stripping, misc hoses, and on the way out my dad spots a 280zx with this hanging from it.Got it for 25$.

I get to drive it tomorrow. I installed the new stripping and windshield and i got another fuel pump but i need to buy the correct fittings tomorrow. So thats where im at right now. I dont knoe for sure if im going to use that tip when i get my exhaust done or not. Depends on how it sounds.

Got it up and running took it for its first real drive 1 block away and the fuel pump died. I have another stock one in now and its holding up so far. I have to buy gas and take it for a once around to see how it will act.

 

I am trying to figure out if i have my vac. lines correct but i cant find pictures or diagrams of how a few of them go.

 

I put some 280zxt wheels on a few weeks ago with new tires.

 

And im trying to source a nice ls1 motorset for under 3k. I have seen some on ebay but i have to do a bit more background checking before i finalize it. And i have to sell the l24 to pay for the mounting kit from JCI. And there wiring is being done for 300$ at a shop near me because i suck at wiring.

 

I havn't did much else because we got a bowflex and i messed up my wrist maxing it out too much. I still have to replace the front oil seal and get my low beams to work and im done.
