JustinOlson
I'm going to be building a NHRA cage for my 280z starting the 26th of December. I'm looking for ideas of how to fit the 6X6 base plates nicely. Any close up pictures would be appreciated. I will post a lot of pictures I've seen around here and I'd like feedback of whats is a Good -> Better -> Best Way. The only thing that concerns me on the cage bellow is the main hoop contacting its base plate at an angle. Is there any way to get around this? JMortensen
Pretty easy to make a little box to set the bottom of the hoop on. That's what I did.
JustinOlson
I'm just not sure if boxing plates are legal for NHRA. That seems like a good way to go if it is.. Here are the rules: http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/NHRA-legal_Roll_Bar Regards, Justin
JustinOlson
For the A pillar bars I've been trying to decide how I'm going to mount them. Option 1: Option 2: Regards, Justin
jbk240z
Well, I am very far from being an engineer, but I think option 1 would be the way to go. It seems it would be alot stronger this way.
JMortensen
Option 1 for sure. The rocker where you'd be attaching to is much stronger than the floor. I originally had my hoop and down tubes attached ONLY to the rocker and not the floor, and ended up putting boxes under the tubes only to satisfy the potential nervous nelly tech inspector. I think it would have been absolutely fine the way it was. Option 2 might allow you to weld the side of the tube to the rocker, but then the connection to the rocker is purely in shear and the compression loads are going mostly to the floor. The floor is weak. The rocker is much stronger.
JustinOlson
So should I mount as much of the downtube to the rocker as possible? Regards, Justin
JustinOlson
Found yours Jon,
JMortensen
Yes, I'd get it as far onto the rocker as possible. I was able to get about 1/2 the thickness of the 1.75" tube on top of the rocker.
JustinOlson
Yeah, I'm going to be using 1.625 X 0.083 Chromoly. Maybe I can get most of it up there. Justin
JustinOlson
I ordered 100ft of 1.625 X 0.083 CM and 40ft of 1.25 X 0.065 CM. That should be plenty for two cages I'd think =) Its begun.. Another question, Do I need to do a bar that follows the rocker? Its shown here in the rule book: Regards, Justin
