2jz - what's a good $$

Like lots of the guys on HybridZ, Ive been wrestling with whether or not to get the famed RB26, or the Supra's 2jz. Everyone knows that either is a great powerplant, but being in the USA I think the 2jz is a better choice.

I've been doing some research on the RB26 and it seems that for the engine, ecu, harness and AWD tranny the going price is between $3500 & $5000.

With the 2jz, I haven't seen many packages like that, but the engine price with harness and ecu seems to be between a seemingly bogus $900 and about $2000. That's w/o a transmission.

http://www.japanpowerinc.com/engine_details/36/95-97_Toyota_2JZGTTE <- there's an engine combo that's 1800. Seems like a fair price to me, considering how much easier it is to source parts for it in the US than the RB26. But do I need the 2jz transmission as well? And if so, how do you mate it to an r200 diff?

Well I was advised against getting an E-Bay one. Eventually I ended up getting the E-Bay one. The motor had a few items that were damaged in shipping the guy replaced them for free. I would still agree with everyone that if possible you should get a local one but I got lucky and got a good E-Bay one. I ended up paying 1800 shipped with auto trans, harness, and ECU.

You will need a toyota transmission with the exception of using a TH400 auto trans. The R154 is a cheaper 5 speed, the Getrag 6 speed is not cheap but very strong, and the stock toyota auto from what I understand is an ok choice for low power levels but even after being built is not that strong (I may be wrong with this one). You will just need to have a custom drive shaft made to mate the trans to diff.

If you guys are ordering off of ebay/Japan import you also want to make sure and verify that it is actually a Supra 2JZ-GTE. The Aristo in Japan also had a 2JZ motor in it however it was slightly different and not as strong out of the box plus a few different parts and they are very common on ebay. Sellers like to say they are Supra motors when they are not. I would recommend confirming that it is a USDM motor before purchasing

http://www.car-parts.com will usually have a 6 speed getrag for ~2k which is what you will pay for a decent one. If you want an auto tranny I would get the Supra auto and then send it off to Boost Logic and have them build it......most of the Supra guys on Supraforums.com with auto's send em there.

More innacurate information.

The Aristo and USDM Supra engines are both 2JZ-GTE with the differences being the cams, turbos (minor) and oil pan sump.

So I am failing to see how that was inaccurate information. I said they were both 2JZ's however they are slightly different?? Is that not the exact samething you just said minus me going into the specifics of how they were different? :icon53:

If its about them not being as powerful out of the box they aren't. They were slightly detuned in comparison to our USDM motors? Is that what you think is inaccurate? I am not meaning to be disrespectful but thats what I was informed by the guys at http://www.supraforums.com and then the samething was told to me at http://www.mkiv.com when I had my Supra?
