THUNDERZ
I was looking under my 280Z that has a SBC 350 with a T-5 tranny. I have the JTR type set up which has the HEI dizzy right up against the firewall. The tranny is a non W/C 5 speed. I want to relpace the clutch, but it doesnt look like the tranny can move back much more than a couple inches, wich I'm not sure if that is enough to get it off the shaft. Will it come off without pulling the motor?
Guest Dainger
I doubt you will clear the clutch assembly if you can only move back 2 inches...you could unbolt the bell housing from the engine, then pull the whole unit back as far as you can and unbolt the clutch assembly from the fly wheel, then the input shaft of the tranny might clear the pilot bushing in the crank. if that works it will come out...but bear in mind this all has to go back in, you wont be able to use the alignment tool to line everything up...you would be putting the clutch assembly onto the input shaft of the tranny with the bell housing on, bench pressing it all up into place and trying to line up and torque to spec the bolts that hold the clutch assembly to the fly wheel. all this with the input shaft in perfect alignment to slide into the pilot bushing...or slide the input shaft into the pilot bushing then try to line up and torque to spec the bolts through the hole for the clutch fork. sounds kinda impossible if you ask me. no to mention getting the bell housing on and off of the tight fitting dowel pins in the block is not simple even out of the car. you may be further ahead to just pull the engine and tranny. clean it up and put a new coat of paint on it while its out, It'll make you feel better about all the work. Dayz
Sorry, didn't see you had an SBC! Dayz
THUNDERZ
I was thinking the same thing. I am going to pull the motor out with the tranny. I do have some clean up I could do like you said...It will really be worth it to be able to see and work without being under the car so everything is done right. Thanks for the advice. savageskaterkid
In an Sr20det S13 my buddy had a similar problem, its hard to get some clearance, especially when using nismo motor mounts. He found out that if he could unbolt it and just get it off the dowel pins, about 1/4 inch, then rotate the transmission so its upside down, then pull it off. It worked on the 240, not too sure about an SBC Z
