Im re assembling my engine and i forgot to baggy and label all the bolts I have everything except cant find the chain tensior bolts there are two of them and i cant seem to find a bolt that is the right size. also in the how to build your datsun ohc engine Tim mentions there is a gasket that fits between block and tensioner and in the FSM it mentions nothing about a gasket i have all my gasket sets and there is nothing in that shape. Can anyone shed some light my way.

Also if i cant purchase the bolts seperatly i might get the complete engine bolt set I remember seeing those for sale in SS allen heads I cant seem to find that website. So if they dont sell them no more can someone tell me the size and length of bolt it looks like im going to have to buy them seperatly.

The paper-thin gasket between the tensioner and the block was installed by Nissan at the factory. However, it was never identified separately in the Nissan Parts manual (fiche) so you were never able to get it from Nissan and hence none of the aftermarket gasket suppliers ever included it. It may have been included if you purchased a NOS tensioner, but everyone now uses aftermarket timing chain kit parts due to cost and availability.

The standard accepted practice is that the tensioner gasket is not used/needed. Usually the tensioner body and the engine block are already smooth enough. If you are anal about it then you can surface the new tensioner with some valve ginding compound over a piece of glass. Any minor oil leaks between the tensioner and block are inconsequential as the tensioner is a “calibrated oil leak” to lubricate the timing chain.

I have rebuild over a dozen L-series engines and I have never used a gasket under the tensioner and never had a problem.
