Drax240z
For thsoe of you that can recall when you had a nissan tranny in your car, did you at any time cut your shifter to give it a shorter throw? I am in the process of doing this now, I've cut off the threaded end to reweld onto the shaft, I'm just not sure how much material I should remove to give it a sporty feel. I'm thinking 1"... anyone remember doing this? ------------------ Drax240z 1973 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
Guest Drewz
Let me know what you decide to do as I may do the same thing if it works. Be my guniea pig.(lol) would be a nicer shifting unit if this works. Go the check and the parts will go out on sunday. Later!!!!!!!!!! ------------------ Drewz
Drax240z
Woo hoo. Any luck coming across a 73 T-C rod thats straight? I did the shifter tonight, 1" off. Put it in the tranny (which isn't in the car) but it feels good. And the throw is definately shorter, I can't tell how much without it actually in the car though. If nothing else I've made some room in front of the CD player in my car. ------------------ Drax240z 1973 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html

Drax240z
Thats ok, I still think I can straighten it myself without too much trouble. Try cutting an inch or so off of your shifter and let me know how it feels! Hehe. You can be my guinea pig now, since my tranny isn't even in my car. ------------------ Drax240z 1973 240z - L28TURBO transplant on the way! http://members.xoom.com/r_lewis/datsun.html
Guest Drewz
OOOOOOhhhhh. So its going to be like that eh! No problem, I am used to jumping azz first into things. Hell, I am married ya know. If my wife ever asks you, I will say that you made me say that!(LOL) I will tackle it this weekend and let you know. P.S. Have faith that you will get the parts shipped from me this thursday. The only stupid question is one you wanted to ask but never did. Drew
Drax240z
I have faith in the parts, since if you send me this stuff ok I'll be buying a lot of exhaust stuff from you probably. Guest Anonymous
I have a later box in my 240, either a 280zx or a Skyline (aussie).I,ve chopped approx. 2" off the stick and it's great. One thing I di which makes the whole process easier is to use an aftermarket gearknob, mine is an Autotechnica similar to a Momo but 1/3rd the price. These don't screw on like the original knob, they come with a set of bushes to fit the end of the stick that you've just cut off and then have 3 grub screws which bite into the stick when tightened and then a dress collar which screws up and hides the grub screws. It not only looks good but it works really well too.Happy shifting, regards Craig. [/b]
Guest Anonymous
I went one step further with the 5-speed I'd put in my 260. I used a torch to heat the base of the shifter shaft (after removing it from the trans ,Duh!) and bent it to the left and rear a couple of inches. 2nd gear rested almost on my leg and 5th gear was easy to reach without pulling my shoulders forward from the seat. I liked it so well, when I get the V8 & T56 in place in the 240, I will do whatever it takes to make this alteration. My $.
