Guest Anonymous
Future Nissan in Ca. has a VERY limited quantity of factory new complete R200s. They are selling these for $300 plus shipping. Call Future Nissan at 916-786-7879 and speak to Kevin Berg, parts mgr.(ext.53) Better hurry cause he only had 5 left as of 12noon e.s.t. the date of this post. He said he sold 7 yesterday so they may be gone today.
pparaska
As of 1pm eastern today (7th) there were 5 left. At 1:01pm, there were 4. Yep, I got one. Now, here's a question. If I have a brand spanking new R200, can I easily put a LSD unit in it? I'd think as long as I got the shims right to center it left/right, the pinion depth would be fine. I'd have no pre-worn pattern to worry about matching, so there shouldn't be any noise. I'd think I could get the backlash to be nice and tight, if there's enough play available with the as-setup pinion depth. I have a burnt LSD unit that came out of a 300ZX (and then somebody's HybridZ, right Scottie ?) The gears don't look too hot, so I haven't put it in anything. I plan to get new clutch parts for it and put it in this new 3.545:1 R200 and have a mostly new LSD R200. If the 3.7:1 in the car fails, or I don't like the gearing, I have a tiny bit of room to move the 4th gear rpm down with the 3.545:1 unit. Think this will work? My only challenge should be finding shims to set it up if the ones out of the 300ZXT diff and the new diff don't have the right thicknesses to get the backlash within spec. ------------------ Pete Paraska - 73 540Z - Marathon Z Project pparaska@home.com Pete's V8 Datsun 240Z Pages
Owen
I just called right now, 11:50 PST and there are still 4 left. Would it be best for me to grab one of these and do what Pete is doing, or just wait or get a used R200 non-LSD for around 50 bucks? What if I get a used one and then swap in LSD parts, is this possible. Really strapped on cash... Owen
Guest Anonymous
Mine was built using a second hand one (the one originally in the car, a '75 RS30 260Z) and swapping in LSD bits. But sorry can't give much more detail than that.... a Z specialist over here did it for me, merely asking me to contribute a small bag of gold..... Only real value their is for someone with nothing that really wants a 3.54 open diff and doesn't want to mess with rebuilding in any manner. $300US is a big tag IMO for some new bearings/seals. Bearings and seals are way less and no biggie to replace and 3.54's are a dime a dozen for anyone with patience. If you're doing an LSD you need to go into it anyhow so just replace what' pertinent at that time. It's the LSD parts if you need them that really add up new, not bearings/seals. And R200 gears last VERY well IME. I've put 3 dozen plus R200's at least from under my noise out to Z fans (6+ on this board) running anywhere from OEM to 400+V8 setups, just check that all's tight and gear wear pattern is good to spare yourself from unneeded expenses later on. New LSD setups at a discount is exciting..new open leggers I don't see much if any advantage over a used unit. The used unit you KNOW the gears are wearing well by checking or they'd of never lived as well as they did/ie. proven. just my .02c and canadian at that....back to my studies ------------------ Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. Owen
Thanks Ross, That's what I thought, especially since I'm strapped for cash. I'm waiting to see what happens with the R230s as well as what kinda diff is in the new Z. Thanks again everyone.
