pshepard327ci
I get 10.12:1 with your specs. 333cid= 682cc/cylinder 0.016" in the hole and 4.030 bore = 3.3cc -1cc for dome 8.4cc for 0.039" head gasket Pyro, when selecting the head gasket do i just want to take the .040 - .016(piston below deck) = .024 So i should be looking for a head gasket around that compressed thickness? I know that i want to get as close to that .038-.04 number as possible. Is that the correct way to figure it out and/or what else can i check before moving forward. pparaska
There's was 0.026" (compressed) GM head gasket that would work well with .016" deck height (below deck). Info: http://www.jrgmparts.com/GM_Performance_Parts/GM_Parts_Catalog/GM_Engine_Components/GM_Small_Block_Crate_Engine_Co/Head_Gaskets_Bolts_GM_Chevy_Sm/head_gaskets_bolts_gm_chevy_sm.html There is probably an alternative...Here's a Victor Reinz gasket that's 0.025" thick: http://www.cnc-motorsports.com/product.asp?ProdID=20108 You can probably get this gasket elsewhere - I'm not too happy with the service from these guys as of late. Mr. Gasket also a .028" gasket, no warning about using on AL heads, but that would work for you too - PN 1134 See the 138th page of this pdf (page 136 printed on page) : http://go.mrgasket.com/newproducts/CAT_PDF/74220G.PDF
dr_hunt
Actually it's the opposite, if your piston is below deck .016 you would add that to the compressed thickness of the gasket. In your case to achieve desired quench you'll want to go with the metal shim headgasket IMO. Spray with copperkote both sides and install. I believe that it's around .025 compressed so you'd be at .041 piston to cylinder head distance.
pshepard327ci
Mr. Gasket has a .026" gasket, but they say it's for Steel Heads, but that will work for you - PN 5716 Mr. Gasket also has a .028" gasket, no warning about using on AL heads, but that would work for you too - PN 1134 See the 138th page of this pdf (page 136 printed on page) : http://go.mrgasket.com/newproducts/CAT_PDF/74220G.PDF I checked it out and i think i would have to use the 1134, i dont have ls1 heads, there 462 camel humps. I did find a site with the GM gasket and might try to order that this evening. How does the bore size of the gasket affect anything. Am i looking for >4.030 or would the 4.0 bore like the GM one work fine?
pparaska
Yep - I screwed up - the first gasket is for a LS1 - my bad - I'll edit the original post. Yep, the 1134 will do it for you.
pshepard327ci
I ordered the 3830711 GM Gasket, .026 compressed through http://www.superchevyperformance.com/Default.asp, not to bad on price, turned out cheaper than the Victor Reinz for the same thickness. I dont need to be worried about the GM saying bore size 4.00" when i have a 30 over block? Thanks again Peter for pointing me in right direction.
