R200 short nose shipping damage

Well, I have given up on the solid R for my 78 Z due to a lack of good documented information and have decided to go to the R200 LSD Techno Toy conversion. I located a 95 Q45 short nose R200 w/axles and it was delivered Tuesday. I immediately noticed that the box had asmall rip and a very small portion of the diff was poking through. I held my breath, opened the box and immediately noticed that one of the (6) ears of the output flange was what was sticking out and it was bent inward about 1/8", obviously from some dip$hit dropping it. The diff was packed top and bottom but inexplicably not packed at the 2 flanges. I'm sure it was shipped undamaged.

I was wondering if anybody else had dealt with a problem like this and if the diff can or should be repaired. I couldn't see any stress/ crazing damage, just the ear bent inward with a rough edge where it hit. Is there a possibilty of further internal damage as yet undiscovered?

If this is an easy fix what is the best method for doing so? Luckily I bought this through Paypal since I have not received a response to my note to the vendor sent early yesterday morning, hmm..I had this delivered to my folks place (retired) so my dad could inspect and sign for it!! He never got the opportunity since DHL dumped the package without knocking on the door or getting a signature.

Any input or suggestions here would be appreciated. Thanks!!

This seems like a non-tech post, but it may get a little techy so I'll leave it here for now.

What you have is obviously shipping damage, and DHL should pay for the damage. Usually a claim is placed by the shipper, DHL comes out and gets the item and inspects it. They then cut a check to the shipper, and they either reship you a new item or refund you.

I would expect that it would not be hard to find the output shaft at a junkyard, so you may consider that as an alternative to going through the hassle with the shipper. Maybe the seller might pay for the part to avoid the hassle of making a claim.

Thanks Jon, the only reason I put it here was due to the question of "fixing" the output shaft.

Problem solved! That is exactly what happened- I was contacted and I am being sent another differential, DHL will come out and pick up the damaged piece. I've got plenty of dissassembly left so it's no rush.. Thanks again for the input. -Will
