bigjohnsonzc
So i have a five speed out of my 77 280z. Not sure on what the model is but i am anxiously wanting to pull it apart and rebuild it. The problem is that i removed all the bolts (so i have thought) and tried to seperate the pieces, but it wont come more than a quarter inch appart. I do know there are dowl pins but is there any thing else im missing? Do i have to put it in a certian gear? Maybe remove a snap ring from either end? Whats up? Any one have ideas. . FlatBlack
Did you take the slave cylinder off the tranny?
blue72
Here's a writeup from ratsun.com. It's the same basic transmission with a different bellhousing. http://forum.ratsun.net/showthread.php?t=8978
bigjohnsonzc
Did you take the slave cylinder off the tranny? No i didnt remove that. . i seemd to be connected to the whole shifting bar/shaft. BLUE72 .... Thanks for that page. . it seems to me that the trans should just come apart if the picture that were taken are correct.
Doug71zt
There is a pin that prevents the shifter from over-travelling from side to side on some of the early transmissions. It is near the top of the tail housing. You have to pull this pin to allow the shift striker to move out of the way of the shift rods in the transmission. That is what you are hung up on. If you go to the NICO site, there are downloadable original factory service manuals for the 280Z that will have a good rebuild procedure for this transmission. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/ Sorry if I'm being a bit simple in the explanation, but I'm nowhere near the z car right now. Z_Rac3r
After wards I believe to get the tail shaft off, you also have to be in reverse. My tranny lost 5th gear so I had to manually move things around to fully get it apart. Someone, correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't tried to rebuild one yet. jeffer949
Did you take off the front cover and the snap ring?
Z_Rac3r
is this a question to me or the OP?
jeffer949
Just saying it has to come off in order to get the transmission apart. So to everybody i guess.
HowlerMonkey
The reverse light switch is mentioned in the service manual. And something on the opposite side called the reverse check sleeve.
