dirtbiker245
Im gonna be running a 255lph walbro in-line pump on my turbo setup. Im trying to find a good in-line filter that has a 12mm inlet and 12mm out and wont be too restrictive. Does anybody know of a place to buy one offhand? Thanks for your help! jc052685
Never heard of a fuel filter being too restrictive for a little ol 255l. What car is this going on? Cause if its on the thee Z32s in your sig then you just bought yourself a pump that flows less than you stock one.
dirtbiker245
sorry, its for a 1970 240z with a 280turbo l28. And to clarify, I want to put the filter between the tank and the pump so on the LOW pressure side of the pump. The problem is that the tank has a 12mm outlet and the pump has a 12mm inlet, SO I want an inline filter that preserves the 12mm flow size so as not to restrict flow. Hope that makes more sense and clarifies anything that you werent sure about.
jc052685
Why do you want the filter there? Good chance it could starve the pump for fuel regardless of in/out size.
dirtbiker245
I want it there so as to not worry about debris getting in the pump and wrecking it. I have a filter AFTER the pump but I had a pump fail and I think it was due to sediments in the tank. This fuel tank has been modified by the previous owner to have the fuel pickup on the ABSOLUTE bottom of the tank so instead of debris piling up on the bottom of the tank, it goes straight into the pump. What would you suggestions be to my situation? Should i just run a walbro with no filter and hope for the best?

It is more or less a last chance type of screen that stops big pieces of trash from getting into it. I think its a good idea to put a filter prior to the pump, but I don't know of any with a 12mm opening ( 1/2 inch ). You could try one of the big spin on type of filters with the large fittings that you can get off of the Summit website maybe, I bet they flow quite a bit. jc052685
well then it sounds to me that the problem is the sediment in thee tank not the filter location. I have not seen personally any z car with a filter before the pump other than the intank pumps with a screen. I would take care of the problem and not be trying to find a way around it. Drop the tank and inspect it. If there is a large amount of sediment then clean it out and coat the inside with a protectant/sealant. This a much better way to go about this. dirtbiker245
Jc, no matter how clean I make the tank and how perfect i get the tank.. hell, it could be a brand new tank, it still is a good idea to have SOME kind of screen/filter to help keep big stuff out that could have come in just from contaminated fuel at a gas pump. Thats all I am looking for. Every tank I have ever worked on has some kind of screen thats usually at the pickup IN the tank. Unfortunately, with this setup, I am unable to do the conventional in tank screen on the pickup so im looking for a inline type filter. I'll check out summit. Thanks for the info

dirtbiker245
Funny, I have seen quite a few 280z & zx with the factory fuel pump in them. Still running strong decades later. The station pumps have a filter and screen anyway. JC, again, those stock setups have some kind of filter before the pump. Some kind of SCREEN to get big things out. Its not a fine filter, but it has SOMETHING. The problem here is that I have a STRAIGHT line coming out of the bottom of the tank with NO filtering, NO screen, NOTHING. I think ive got it figured out though nonetheless. Im just gonna try a walbro and i'll let you guys know how it works out.
jc052685
You have a part number for this filter because I am pretty sure it doees not exhist. On a few hundre z/zx I dont believe I have ever seen a screen or filter before the pump.
bmarchuk
For those of you who think that it is not a common practice to install a filter before the pump, check this out: http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/fuel/g3filter/index.htm I have heard of many people doing this and its something I did to mine as well... Old cars... bad gas tanks... good idea! No tiny little "screen" is going to save your pump if your tank is pretty bad. Its going to get clogged, restrict your pump, overwork it, and burn it out faster. Also: Clear filters mean you can see that your gas is pumping, and how it looks, right out of the tank. CarJway
Yes, it is wise to run a filter before your fuel pump. I have a picture below of my fuel system, which has two inline filters. As for locating a fuel filter, I purchased everything below from Summit. My pre-pump filter is a Professional Products inline filter. You usually want a higher Micron filter first, than a lower Micron filter pre-injectors. Most of the filters on Summit come in a NPT fitting style, so you can convert that to any type of hose you may be using. (Convert this to barbed hose, to run 12mm line, etc..)
