iheartz
hey guys. ok i've searched this forum on and off for the last 2 maybe 3 months now... im not new to the Z, but i am new to the s30. i picked up my first s30 (76 208z) in august of 08, fixed/stripped it until it got cold in late october. since then its been sitting in the driveway. if i have a sec (which is not often) i'll play with it here and there. i might take it for a drive up the street, only to turn around and put it right back in place... that all is irrelevant, but when i purchased the car, i needed a battery... im going to swap an engine (no time soon, but eventually), so i got a odessey battery... it puts out 14.5v. the v.regulator only allows the alternator to put out 12.5 volts. for this reason my battery doesnt stay charged. (thats the conclusion i came to...) initially, i thought it was the alternator because i replaced the battery (first). by replacing the alternator, i learned that these beasts have externally v.regs, so i replaced that too. but then later learned that my battery output is 14.5, so in order for my alternator to continually charge my battery, it has to be putting out 15volts, right?! (i just thought of this) what if i were to increase the fuse??? i never thought to check the fuse, but i guess if it were popped or even too low, the power i need wouldnt be getting to the battery... (i know im drifting all over the place here) but my main question was, is there a such thing as a performance volatge regulator, or high output v.reg for the z? idk, plz help me out. thanks in advance. darom
I got rid of the external voltage regulator on my 76, by installing a later model alternator (which had internal built-in regulator) from a 79 model. If your alternator works properly, it should provide 14.2-14.5 volts. Your battery's normal charge is about 12.4-12.6 volts. I am not familiar with your brand battery, but it will stay charged with the alternator doing 14.2-14.5. Btw, my external voltrage regulator gave me a lot of headaches (it was new) - lights flickered, the voltage gauge showed abnormal readings, its needle was bouncing like a tach.
