  1. ok ok, so i decided to drop the carb idea. -my interest in them was to build more of a authentic 240. but power levels spark a greater interest. i know 500whp is going to take a lot of work, thats the fun part. if only i could find a way to make a decent living doing stuff like this everyday, life would be perfect...
  2. thanks for the carb101. im all about power and go, so efi it is... still clueless about the charger... kjones where are ya?
  3. two thing i know NOTHING about... 1. carburetors 2. superchargers why will it be "easier" to run a supercharger w/ a efi vs. carb setup? side note: my only interest in carbs is for the sound...
  4. yea, i didnt see that exact thread, but was aware of that car... definately makes the decision a little more tempting, but still doesnt answer all my questions. i actually sent that guy a pm. im not trying to sound negative, forgive me, if that is what i sound like. LOL. i dont mean it to sound in any way negative, i do APPRECIATE the help.
  5. there are a couple, but none of which are overwhelming with information... i have found more threads just by the difference of wording... still not happy w/ the searches though. i'll do some research on it. and just to add in. the purpose of the car is autox and just a classic sentament. i'd like to see 500whp. will the supercharger allow that? (i have nooo knowledge on chargers if u hadnt noticed already, just want to do something other than a turb and still hit my target) thanks.
  6. whats up, havent made the time to get on here since april or so. irrelevant. just jogging ideas for a new project. i think i want to go from a 280z (efi) to a 240z (carb). no true reason other than the fact that the 240 was the first s30 made, plus im looking for the THOATY sound of the carbs. my question: is there guys out there supercharging the l28's? or are we only turboing, and n/a building? if so: are the hp gains comperable to the turbo, and hassle less? my reason for inquiring: i just want a quick throttled s30z BUILT w/o the r/c sound of a turbo. sorry if this has been previously discussed, i did search, but was unsuccessful. thanks.
  7. yea it was the fuel injection relay. i thought it might have been a "fuel pump relay", but parts didnt match. so then i asked autozone to look up the injector relay, and i dont think they knew what i was talking about. but thanks for the info, my problem is solved... how are you tony hambric? btw, temporarily i have been (still am) running a hard copper wire directly from the battery to the pump. i found that she runs better that way (slightly richer). i was thinking about threading the line to a switch and fuse for permanant use. these questions are for anyone of course, but since daeron joined the discussion, i'd most like to here what he has to say? 1. What affect does this have on the car and related parts? 2. is there any risks involved by doing this (excluding the switch)? 3. would i be able to bypass and or do w/o the efi relay?
  8. urgent concerning 76 280z: quick question. under the steering column (right side), there is a small box (maybe 2" x 3"). there is two connectors (one above the other), i think the top connector relates to the fuel pump (i think that is my problem). if you know what piece i am talking about, does anyone know what that part is called (i dont have my haynes handy...) need to know today... my car has been impounded b/c it crapped out on me completely. i knew what the problem was in relation to, but was a lazy pos and procrastinated... the car was towed because my registration was bad, need to get the car out today, but it is still not drivable.
  9. im pretty sure its simply (in my case) a loose wire leading to the ecu. they really did a crap job wiring these cars. i've just been too lazy/occupied to attempt ripping out the wiring again. i drive it everyday... there is a cluster of wires just below the clutch pedal spring that lead to the ecu. those are the same wires that get power to the fuel pump. if that series of wires is out of place, the pump doesnt cut on, but by simply pulling them down slightly, the pump cuts on, and operates properly, as long as those wires stay in that position... so my guess is simply a loose wire in the mix... im almost ready to park the z this summer unfortunately, because i have too many other priorities arising.
  10. ok, i purchased a hks universal carbon titanium exhaust muffler 6 years ago. and never mounted it to anything... im tired of this exhaust leak i have. there is a slit in the pipe directly under neath the driver seat of the s30... figured i'd pipe it up properly (cat delete) to the muffler anticipating a le28et soon to come... (i know this is another topic that has been beat into the dirt, sorry) but i think my question is slightly different. the mufflers inlet is 3". 1.think i'll be able to temporarily pipe a 2.5 or 2.25 to the 3" hks and still get the necessary back pressure? or will the hks sserve just as equally as a 3" pipe? piping up the exhaust now would be strictly for looks, and to clear up space in the house... but depending on my budget, i might have a le28et ready for august. thanks.
  11. im on the list too. they look great, thanks.
  12. although that is great strategy(i'll keep that in mind), hmmm... i loved cars before i loved MY wife-to-be. lol, although old cars are so high maintenance... they dont talk back, get jealous, or ask what you are thinking... so........ lol, j/k j/k j/k. hope my gf never sees this... but back to the car, i think i heard (some how) that only 17k was invested in the car... its a z, and we need to keep em alive, but i think the bw is trashy, it DOES look like a burner. looks like alot of the parts were made in china and or bought off of ebay. forgive me if i am a bit harsh, but imo nothing looks of quality. some people cash out on "resto'n" old cars, trash em' out on a quick build and turn around and sell it to make $10g. in turn, that depreshiates the number of cars that serve more of a purpose than "bling"... then ofcourse thats going to become the new f'n fad, and vintage z's and other real cars would become as commercial as the modern day 240sx and honda civic. not f'n cool... idk, your car is always worth more to you personally, than its actually worth, but i take it personally when i see stuff like this. forgive me.
  13. i havent ripped my car apart yet. but i came across a similar issue yesterday. back in october the original fuel pump crapped out on me. so i replaced it with an oem. in that same instance, the fuel pump connector was bad (datsun's wiring sux, and who ever was in charge of that should be brutally tortured [in a nice way] imo). so i soldered those connections together, and i put a toggle switch on it. so my automatic assumption was maybe that those wires were coming a loose. just yesterday, after sitting at a uphill light, my fuel pump start to cut on and off... then when i went to put it into gear, it crapped out on me. started it right back up, and after idle, put it in gear again.... stalled! it did this a number of times until i was finnally able to put it into gear, and i raced to my friends shop i use. hit a light, and when i came to a stop, it stalled again... after diaog... there was no power to the switch, and so there was no power to the pump. i ran a battery to the fuel pump and it cut on immediately. (all wires were good back there). it started to get late and i didnt feel like messing with it, but i noticed that the pump (in the on position of the toggle) would only cut on if i tugged downward on the wires from the fuel pump connection located under the steering column which led to the ecu. if i pushed the wired back up, it would shut out... all wires are properly insulated and look good. maybe if im up to it, i'll try to tear it down and see what exactly is going on. doesnt answer any questions, but just an example of a similar instance. could it be that my ecu is going "bad". or could it be that there is simply a loose wire in the mix that is typical to go out after time...
  14. we obviously established that days ago, but thank you for reiterating on a topic that was no longer in discussion...
  15. well with a my fiance taking half my money, my wife (the z) taking the other half, plus my intentions of moving out to cali after the summer, im taking my build day by day... if i get there great, if i dont, no harsh regrets either... i've got a strict LIST of cars to build before i die, i'm not going to cry myself to sleep at night if i dont hit 500...
  16. i dont need to continue disputing this, im not trying to argue. to some (myself), time is a neglegable investment when it comes to art/creation. to take something out of the box and install it just because it "fits" sometimes has no fun factor. i am a perfectionist, and i dare to be different; so if having "slightly" larger turn signals that looked exactly like the stock ones required me to put in hours of labor making them fit, it might be worth it if they appreciate the look of the car.
  17. yea, that makes sense. with all due respect to zr8ed, heating the springs would allow the metal to stretch variably (depending on how hot you got each individual spring). therefore, by cutting a hot spring, you wouldnt be making as accurate of a cut than cutting springs with a wheel at room temperature. like i said earlier, i heard it through the grape vine that cutting springs was not prefered (v8's might be different). but i should agree with justinOlson, as long as there is enough spring to condract w/o knocking into the strut, you should be fine. spring rate should actually increase by a shorter spring, that results in less strut travel. due to an empty z, im riding 2" above stock height. i'm going with a coilover system in the next two months. that will then help me decide if i want to go 14" wheels or 15" wheels. but hey, i have nothing to do this afternoon, i'll cut my springs for the fun of it. see wat happens... -i'll probably start at an inch, because im sitting pretty high. (struts appear to be good)
  18. i was told that its TOTALLY not recommended to do so... (i was TOLD) i once had a budget e36 that i modified to cash out on. one thing i wanted to do was cut the springs. another guy who is experienced in autox racing says that it completely skrews w/ the handling of the car, will create understeer, and is not recommended... i think he heard that from some other guy... (mythical?) why cant you just cut them with a compressor powered whiz-wheel cutter? wouldnt heating cause the coils to variably expand? sounds logical, and makes sense.
  19. im up next... lol, someday... nice work, beautiful 240...
  20. why is any effort put forth on any of the products made for cars? because of customization, individuality, styling, performance... if no effort was invested in making alternatives, then every car would look the same, sound the same, drive the same, be the same...
  21. what does this mean, and what effect would it have?
