Oil filters - which way?!?

OK time for more dumb qu. from me...

Which way does oil flow thru a filter? Is is thru the centre and out or vice-versa? Or does it vary by engine manufacturer?

Reason being, I am going to fit an oil cooler, via my remote oil filter mount and it doesn't have direction markings.... when I fitted it, I just matched like with like when plumbing it up but I don't want to do that this time, obviously...

Ta again!

Center flows out to the unit, either remote filter, cooler or pre-luber, then is cycled back into the motor by the offset unit. Caveate here: Check with the manufacturer of the remote unit to doublecheck it. If you got it at Summit, or Jegs, Or if they carry the same unit, call them up and ask their tech line. They can confirm what I have seen in all of the relocation kits I have installed

Damn - now I've confused myself.....

After posting this, it occurred to me to ring the oil filter manufacturer of the brand I use; they tell me that oil normally flows into a filter via the outer holes, and back to the engine thru the centre hole..... the example I quoted was the filter I use, which is a Ford V8 unit (known here as a "Ryco Z9", is this a universal code?).

This seems contradictory to your advice, Mike, which I greatly respect...although I realise you caveated... Also, we don't have the stores you mentioned here....

Help!

Time out...

Just noticed you are one of our friends from down under...

Go with what your manufacturer tells you as he would know. Also, there may be variances due to differing construction of Euro spec pieces..
