BW T5 rebuild cost?

I would say between $500 and $1500 depending on what parts it might need.

I know the input shaft is really expensive as it is the only non-standard T5 part. My tranny guy said it would cost $800 for one from the dealer. So I have a bucket of T5 parts if people need them. the only thing I'm keeping is the bell housing.

i have a bell housing for a t5 but i didnt keep the trans.i dont like the ratio spread .i use a 82 zx na trans.used to work as a tech at a ford dealer.tried to put a 5.0 mustang trans on the zxt bell housing.no luck-the input bearing retainer on the wc t5 is bigger around-but a little turn on the lathe will fix it.if i ever have excess hp problems i will try to install a wc t5.t5 trans is easy to rebuild.usually just need synchros and bearings.

I guess its a good thing that I'm friends with the son of 2 people that work for a transmission rebuilding company. They gave me a quote for $100-$200 for all the bearings and syncros. :) Mine is going to need them to. Its about to hit 300,000.

What horse power/torque are these trans good for? My goals are around 450-500.

Please note that it is not HP per se that gives trannies problems - it's torque.

The BW is only good for ~240-270 ft/lbs.

An L28ET producing the power you're looking for will more than likely produce the same amount or more of torque...

Brad - Can you qualify this statement? I know several BW T5 owners pushing well past 400ft.lbs at the rollers at the tranny are holding up great. One car is raced at Mosport within an inch of its life, and the T5 keeps takin' a lickin'.

One more slightly off topic question....

When converting to l28et, if you use the R200, driveshaft and BW t5 the driveshaft does not need to be shortened correct?

Appears to be only 1st Gen only:

http://www.datsunzgarage.com/borg/index.htm

DRIVESHAFT (the tricky part in a 1st generation Z)

The Nissan T5 came with a special driveshaft to fit the 280ZX. It is stouter and fatter than other Z driveshafts, has a different spline count on the front end, and a square flange on the rear. In other words, the only driveshaft that will fit the T5 is the one that came with it. A 240/260/280 driveshaft cannot be modified to fit.

LENGTH: The T5 driveshaft is almost the same length as regular Zcar driveshaft, but the T5 transmission is a few inches longer. This means if you use a Nissan T5 trans/driveshaft in a first generation Z the driveshaft will be too long by about 2-3 inches. The solution is to have a custom driveshaft made, or have the stock one shortened. Most driveshaft shops can fabricate one if you tell them what you want, about $300. A cheaper solution for us budget ZCAR people is to have the stock one shortened and rewelded, about $100. This gets tricky because driveshafts should be shortened only at the ends for balance reasons. And for some reason Nissan T5 driveshafts neck down to smaller diameters right at the flanges. This means that after cutting, the yoke and flange ends are too small to weld up to the center tube.

But I went down to the local racing machine shop that does my head work in Richmond, Va (Ballos Machine). The owner used to race and make his own driveshafts and said he would take a stab at it. Somehow he broke the law of physics and cut both ends, shortened it, and magically rewelded a perfect bead for $90. It may not be perfect for a 500hp nitrous Z, but on a 6-cyl 2,200 lb car it works great. Don't believe a shop when they say it can't be done.

I don't quite understand that...why would you need to modify the rear flange if swapping in the R200 with it as well? Isn't that driveshaft modification referring to if you are using the original R180 with it?

BTW, thanks for the responses...I have been searching and reading for over a month and never seem to get actual definate answers/solutions to my questions.(yes I know how to use search and am familiar with forums).

If it came with a manual trans, either T5 or Nissan, or it was Turbo, it came with a R200. You don't need to modify the flange. He was saying that if the driveshaft is being shortened that they cut the flange off, remove material from the end, and weld the flange back on.
