jhaag
I'm looking at getting a drill press (and an 'Ol Joint Jigger' eventually) but I know nothing about them. They seem to be advertised by how big a swing the arm has (12", 14" etc.) and by the horsepower of the motor. What are the pros & cons of a floor drill press versus a bench drill press, apart from the issue of space? Any comments would be appreciated. I hate buying a tool before I really understand all of the features.
Guest Fast Frog
Hello, John Haag from Englewood! I can't help you with the drill press-just wanted to say hello!
Mikelly
Go big if you can... I have a smaller unit, and my brother has a floor mount unit and his is much more usefull. I also recommend getting the 'Ole joint jigger and a tubbing bender from Northern Tools... My tubing bender was on sale for $89 and works with rollcage tubing... 12ton unit and comes with a multitude of shoes for tubing sizes... I'm currently looking at leasing a milling machine... However, My brother is having to reclaim the welder he loaned me, so I had to buy a new Mig welder this weekend... Should be delivered this week sometime... And of course I want a plasma cutter too.... Mike
Guest Anonymous
The larger units generally are a little more heavy duty, the castings are real heavy and solid. I bought one from harbor freight, floor unit for less than 200.00 and it works fine. We had a old, old Delta drill press and a Craftsman in one shop and the HF one I have works as well, took some doing to get it hoisted up straight after putting the head onto the main pipe on the stand, the Chinese don't spare the cast iron on they're machine tools... HF, Northern, Grizzly, and a few others all sell versions of the same chinese made tools. Wouldn't mind having a plasma cutter myself... sigh... Guest Locutus
hey Mike where did you get the tubing bender? and it was really only 89 dollars? that seems really inexpensive, I have seen some well over a 1000 bucks in catalogs Mike
Mikelly
Locutus, I'm pretty sure I saw my exact tubing bender for sale in the latest Northern Tool catalog for $89... Plus about another $40 to ship it I'm sure, but it is a standard "Pipe" bender, not recommended for mild steel tubing, that a friend of mine tipped me off to as being IDEAL for small cage & Tubing projects. Mine is the 12 tone unit, yellow in color. Mike Kelly
