fast240z
Hello fellow Z-heads... My name is Michael (Yeah, another one...) and I drive a 70' 240Z. I have been on the 240z.org list nearly since the begining, and I have visited HybridZ several times, just haven't registered till now. The car in question is an SCCA FP autoX machine. If you haven't already guessed, it is still an L28. The car undergoing some improvments in several areas (aren't they all) but for now I will focus on the seats. A while back I picked up a Corbeau racing seat (sorry, don't know the model). I ordered the adapter bracket from Corbeau and attempted the fit only to find that first the seat interfered slightly with the rollbar, and second, put me wat to high in the car (I'm 6'2" + helmet). My question, ...to those of you who have used Corbeau seats in your Z's, how did you go about mounting it??? Is my only option here to cut out the stock seat mounts and reinforce the floor??? Any help is appreciated. Sincerely, Michael Mannion El Cerrito, CA

DavyZ
Michael, Craig (IdealZ) has transplanted 2 or 3 types of seats in his Z. He's a tall guy too! (Maybe taller than 6'4" if I remember correctly) Knowing this, you can visit his site at www.ideal-z.com and find the "how to" section. Your question is answered there. It's too late for me to get the info; I'm a ill and have to go to bed, sorry. I hope it helps though. Welcome to the forum! David
Guest Anonymous
'Tis true! I tried a couple of seats in the car and used them for quite some time. You can see the write-up on my site at http://www.zcarcreations.com/howto/hondaseat.htm I started with seats from a CRX and then went to Corbeaus and am now back with stock. I am 6'4", 215 lb. I wear pants with a 34" inseam and have a 36 inch waist. My shoulders are wide as I wear a jacket in size 46 long and my feet are a whopping 14 wide. Did I mention I like a little room in the ****pit? Craig
pparaska
Craig, with a 34 in inseam, at 6'4", you have a very long torso/head! You know that. That's going to be tough to fit into just about any car with a helmet! I have Corbeau A4's in my 240Z, with the stock slide adjusters and some simple adapters that are flat stock. They do put the seat bottom a bit higher than the stock seats. I'm 6'2" with a 36" inseam, so my torso/head is not as tall as Craigs. The top of my head is about 3" below the roof sheetmetal, with the seat all the way back. Wish it was lower.
fast240z
Damn! I was really hoping for the revelation of seat mounting to be made apparent here. Thanks for the advice though. I'm not even getting the 3" or so headroom that a few of you claim, but I used the Corbeau seat rails, and adapter braket. Perhaps I will try fabbing my own braket and using the stock seat rails. Keep the suggestions coming... Michael
Guest Anonymous
I found the Corbeau rails a terrible fit. I used the stock stuff with flat steel bar. I LOVED the Corbeaus but found that they just sat a bit too high and limited my leg room big time. It took me almost a year to make that decision. That puts me up at Pete's level of concentration, right? I ended up just buying the new seat foam repro product and having custom covers made. I haven't installed them yet, though. Guest Anonymous
I think this was mentioned, but couldn't you just reinforce the floor and then use spacers to get whatever height you wanted? I know that when I used the stock seat risers with the Miata seats that they are a tad high, I'm considering just doing like I mentioned above. Make it a tad easier to put the seats in and out, screw them in from the bottom and silicone the nuts and studs so you don't get any rust. Just an idea. Regards, Lone Ps: And no, I'm not tall, at 5'7" and 2something I have big thighs to get under the wheel.
Guest Anonymous
Lone, if you are only concerned with seat bottom to roof clearance then yes. If you are long, however, you must also be concerned with the depth and width of the seat back. The stock seat will hit the rear fender wells if scooted back far enough but the stock seat back is very thin so there is more distance from it to the pedals. Other seat backs are considerably thicker than the Z seats and thus, for long people, reduce the seat back to pedal distance. Now, most of us could probably live with a reduction in one of the two key parameters: seat back to pedals OR seat bottom to roof. But just about every seat I find reduces both. For shorter folks it won't matter because the key parameters become less critical. Now, if you do as Lone suggests and lower the stock mounts then you can fix one of those parameters. I considered that but decided I would still be unhappy. So, for me, both parameters are critical so I went back to stock seats. Did I explain that very well? Guest Anonymous
Yep, understood. And yeah, the mod I was refering to would only help with verticle height, roll cages and seats pushed back to where I can only dream definately change the equation considerably. Thats one of the only good deals of being shorter in the Z I guess is I'll have more room for my roll cage uprights and cross bar. The downside is, if I get where I can depress the clutch all the way, then my arms are not straight as I'd like, if I recline the seats to straighten the arms then its a stretch to the shifter and I can't see out over the hoodscoop. Ah well, compromises, but loving every minute of it... Regards, Lone
Owen
I have the Targa and Targa RS (I think) in my '73. Non stock floors with just rectangle tubing welded to them to use as mounts. Be sure to watch the side clearance too as some seats hit the door skin. Owen
Guest Thurem
Hmmm. I went to a carshow once, and testsat an Alfa Romeo Spider (I think), like the one in "The Graduate". Anyways, it was all very nice, except I could not get it in second gear, cause the stick hit my knee!!!! And I'm "just" 6'1"... I know the Z's have a lot more room cause I'm 2 clicks from all the way back in mine. Thure
