MikeyZee
Hi All, We have a 5 speed that was with the L28 we got and would like to know what it came from. The only thing I can find on it is a serial number I think. I know there are many different 5 speeds wide ratio and close ratio. Does anyone know of a way to tell which one this is? I will post a pic later once I figure out how but the number is 7521128. Thanks! http://s808.photobucket.com/albums/zz5/mguzinski/72%20240z/?action=view¤t=CIMG1357.jpg Edited July 30, 2009 by MikeyZee add picture
eec564
the 7xxxxxxx number you have is just a casting number, and won't do much good. There were three 5 speed transmissions in the Zs. You can view their ratios here http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/ See this page for tranny IDs http://www.geocities.com/inlinestroker/ratio.html If you haven't been here, http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/ , read through everything they have. -Eric
Megatherion
According with the "Haynes automotive repair manual" the ID for the 75-78 280z 5 speed transmission is FS5W71B.
jbk240z
Mike, It looks like the early model 5 speed to me. I know the early trans has 2 mounting ears, the later has 1.
MikeyZee
Thanks for all the information. It is an early (wide ratio) trans according to the inlinestroker site and Jason (JBK) i wonder how it will run with the auto 3.545 R180 rear that is in the 240 now. I did find a couple parts cars with the R200 3.90 but want to get it on the road first.......Jason....any luck with the pedal box removal? MAG58
I ran mine with an R200 3.54 no problems, it doesn't have much of a 5th though. The reason I switched to the close-ratio box is just for the taller 5th. That said with the 3.54 it still had pretty much no problem cruising at 75-80mph. eec564
Stay away from the 3.9 rear end with the wide ratio transmission. First gear will be nearly useless, and you'll cruise at 3500 on the freeway. The R180 3.54 will be just fine. What kills rear ends on Z cars is wheel spin, lighting up just one wheel spins those spider gears to the moon, and they don't like that. Shock loading on the rear end from clutch dumps isn't good either, but that isn't a huge deal at stock power levels with skilled driving.
