MaliceIntent
Im sure this isn't exactly a "secret" engine, but after doing some searching, it doesnt seem to have been talked about on hybridz, so here ya go: Its the Chevy L31-R Longblock (GM# 12530283), available at summit for $2,159.95 (as of 8/11/2009). it is a GEN 1+ motor used in '96-00 trucks and vans and prolly a few other things. It features: - 350ci Displacement - Vortec steel 64cc heads - 9.4:1 compression - 4 bolt main - Roller cam/lifters - 255hp 330tq Summit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-12530283/ I know the HP isnt the greatest, but it comes with a pretty small cam: .414 in. of intake lift and 0.428 in. for the exhausts. Duration at 0.050 in. of lift is 191 degrees for the intakes and 196 for the exhausts, with 111 degrees of lobe separation. I think with a better cam, decent carb, and basic tunning this baby could be 350hp. Not bad for that price IMO. However I have read that the valve springs have to be changed even for a small cam upgrade. This is what im going with, I'll let you all know how it goes. ...and "L31-R" sounds cool haha. -MIKE
rsicard
Crane Cams had some springs and keepers that would allow a greater lift camshaft. To make some real power consider a Dart Block for $1400.00. Then fill it with SCAT crank and rods, SRP pistons, AFR cylinder heads, custom cam and you will have something far superior to a L31 vortec. This is the way I will do it next time and be FAR ahead. SSflyer
With that low compression ratio, that motor might be a good candidate for boost....
MaliceIntent
I wouldn't really call 9.4:1 "low compression" for a crate motor, for example, the 290HP crate GM motor (and a few others) is running 8.5:1. The "Truck replacement" motor is 8.75:1, and even the 330hp HO GM crate and ZZ383 are only 9.1:1. check this out: GM#:19210007 aka 330hp HO crate motor: - 4 bolt main 1-piece rear main seal - 9.1:1 compression - Flat Tappet cam- .435int .460exh with 212/222 duration @ .050in. 112.5 lobe centerline - Vortec 64cc heads - 330hp 380tq - Summit cost: $2,719.95 GM#:12530283 aka L31-R: - 4 bolt main 1-piece rear main seal - 9.4:1 compression - roller cam- 0.414int 0.428exh 191/196 @ 0.050in. 111 lobe centerline - Vortec 64cc heads - 255hp 330tq. (rated on a fuel inj. smog control vehicle) - Summit Cost: $2,159.95 See what i'm getting at here?
rsicard
If your going to go with a crate motor, go for the GM 383 (ZZ383) short block and put AFR-195 heads on it and a good cam and you will be WAY OUT IN FRONT.
rsicard
Its the camshaft, cylinder heads, intake manifold and carb that make all the difference.
