blueovalz
Racing seats provide a channel for the shoulder harness to pass through, thus the top part of the harness is always in an optimum position for restraint should it be necessary. I do not have OEM seats in mine, but if I remember correctly, the headrest gradually tappers and widens down to the back support, thus I have serious reservations as to whether the shoulder harness can be kept in it's proper position (high on the shoulder). Guest 400 ci 280z
then for the reasons said i will get the racing seats when i am getting close to being done (a long time). what are some good seats for a big guy like me?
Guest Drewz
I ahve simply notched a small slot in the headrest of the stock seat for my fiver but if you are going to run a track they will prob. frown on this. Mine is a daily and weekender so I see no problems. IMO!
Guest Anonymous
I have the stock seats with a five point racing harness and it is not the best thing for the reasons mentioned. I use a velcro strap type thing to hold the shoulder straps in place and it is still a pain in the butt. Racing type seats with the holes for the harness to go through are in the future plans. Mo money! Til then I might bolt an aluminum or carbon fiber gizmo with slots in it behind the headrest for the harness to go through. johnc
Under the force of a front impact your shoulders bow backwards (which is good, absorbs energy) and the harnesses try to slip off to the sides (which is bad, makes the steering wheel the next thing you'll taste.) The shoulder cutouts in racing seats are designed to keep the belts on your shoulders and keep your uppser torso from flying sideways too much. In the past, sternum straps (in front of the chest) and H straps (behind the shoulders) were allowed. Accident research has shown that sternum straps don't allow the chest to flex thus causing heart bruising. I don't think any sanctioning body allows them any more. H straps never really worked but I don't know if they are allowed or not.
