So i just recently purchased a r32 GTR and wanted to build it up... but ive never even pulled an engine or anything before so thought id purchase a project car to learn a but on before i start ripping into my gtr.

I noticed a lot of z31s for cheap and was thinking of buying one with a bad/blown engine and dropping a RB20 into it. i thought this would be a good way to get some experience and that it wouldnt be to difficult to do considering the z31s came with the rb20s in japan right so woud almost bolt right in? not to sure what parts id need i can get a complete rb20 for 795 us

$795.00 USD

Model: RB20DET Engine Code: RB20DET 86-89 Valve Train: Twin Cam 24V 6cyl Compression: 8.5:1 Redline: 8200rpm Parts Included checkmark.gifmotor checkmark.gifTransmission checkmark.gifDistributor checkmark.gifAlternator checkmark.gifECU checkmark.gifAll required Cables checkmark.gifComplete Intake&Exhaust Manifold checkmark.gifPower Steering pump checkmark.gifTurbo

anyone have any opinions or suggestions before i start buying some parts up?

Thanks

Why are you pulling the engine out of the GTR to begin with, or what's the reason for going head first into it?

Not having the experience in doing so, what would lead you believe it's the right thing to do at this point?

"before I start buying some parts up"

what parts are you considering? To fit the RB20DET, for starters, into a Z31, you need to buy a Z31 200ZR oil pan which is now discontinued. I sold mine for 400 CAD, so you will have trouble finding out, I can assure you that.

Really I don't see the point in buying another car to gain experience, unless you daily use the GTR... That's a different story.

Tell us more of the "why".

I do use the GTR as a daily in the summer i plan to work on it in the winter. My idea behind buying the 300zx is to gain some experience as i dont really have any at all. The GTR doesnt need its engine pulled but the transmission does have a noisy bearing and im sure it will need to be worked on at some point and i was gonna upgrade turbos then aswell (injectors already done).

I might need to look into the rb20 for the z31 then... the ones im looking at have top mount intercoolers isnt that found on the z31 rbs?

thats the link to the engine if anyone is curious.

I would suggest that you drive whatever else car you have, get a shop manual for your GTR and work on it. You could even take it into a professional for a few things if you choose. Fixing your throw out bearing (Im assuming) and upgrading your turbos would not constitute you having to completely disembowel your car. I see your logic behind the Z31 build but your probably going to end up neck deep in purchases and regret it. "If only I didn't spend the money on that Z31 I could have gotten ________ for my GTR...."
