maf sensors bug me out!

ok heres what happened. i go to jump in my lovely firebird this morning, and it idles for a second, then gets rough, then eventually stalls, ive been fighting this for some time, once i resorting to running hi idle in order to get it to stop stalling, then i figured this out, MAF likes to have a solid connection with no air leaks and like to be mounted one way and one way only to run right, ok so i went to the plumbing store and mount everything really firm and nice with those turbo looking hoseclamp rubber things. ok runs alright, doesnt stall, still runs rough

today i found the problem, there was a hole in the bottom of the air box that is attached to the throttle body, plugged that up with a small piece of tin rtv and tape, and boom, idles great

i dont understand, yes i now the problem is gone, but why does the maf do that?????

im trying to figure this fi out and its weird.

From what I understand it does that due to loss of vaccum. Basically there's an idle silinoid (a small stepper motor connected to you accelarator pump) which controls what the car is idling at. It does this based on the computer which is determinig where to idle based on input from the MAF sensor. Any vaccum loss and the airflow is not what's expected or the reading is not accurate which in turn confuses the computer. When the comp doesn't know what to do it just tries to fix itself until the car either stalls or you turn it off. It should be throwing a code when it's doing all tis. Is you check engine light coming on and blinking or anything while it's doing all this? Just some thoughts. Have a good one.

Man, somebody needs to bounce a spellchecker off the top of my head. Can anyone else tell it's been a long day?!
