HB280ZT
Hi All, Well I was messing around with some 17" wheels that a friend of mine had on his 280Z with stock suspension and 2" wheel adapters. I decided to try them on my 77 280Z with 10" coilovers and here is what I found: 17" X 7" +38 offset sports maxx wheels with 225/45/17 tires They would not clear the wheel bearing cap on the front end of my car so I could not check them there. However on the rear they bolted right up and cleared inside and outside with room to spare, 1/2" from strut and 3/4" from inside of wheelwell lip. So that being said I would love to try a set of 17" X 8" +25 offset with 245/40/17 tires on the rear. Is anyone running anything close to what I am looking for. The wheels that I have found on-line that may work are 4 lug wheels for a 240SX. HB280ZT
Kevin.pk
I run a 17x8 with roughly a 20mm offset. My wheels have a 30mm offset but I have a 3/8" spacer in the rear. Clearance is pretty tight with my wheels but I don't have coilovers. I'm pretty sure those wheels should fit fine. I believe I got my math right on that..... HB280ZT
Thanks for the information. Well I found that the rims I was looking at will not clear the front hubs on my Z. So I am back to looking for something that will fit and that I like. So happy hunting to me!! HB280ZT
Evan Purple240zt
IT doesn't matter if they don't clear your front hubs bolted on, but will they fit with a spacer bolted on first? Evan
HB280ZT
Well to me it does matter if they fit the hubs or not. I use the car as a daily driver and a weekend HPDE track car. Wheel adapters (spacers sit between the hub and wheel, adapters bolt to the hub) are not safe for the track (in my opinion), to many what ifs. Just call me crazy, well people already do so nothing new there!! So like I said I am still looking for something in the 17X8 +25 for the rear and 17X7 +25 for the fronts I think. I really wish I could find someone in the Tampa, Fl area that has tires/wheel that I can try before I buy, did that one time and they did not fit! sticky280zx
why would you want a positive offset? FYI i have 15x8's with about a -13 offset and they fit sexy as a mother with a verrryyyy rolled roll of the fender lip (in the back) the front fits but ofcourse i rolled it so they looked uniform. i dont get why you wouldnt want to fill out the fender by going with a wimpy offset???? pics for reference of the 15x8 -
HB280ZT
The reason I can use a +25 offset is because I am running coilovers all the way around and can use them. You did know that the factory wheels came with a +10 offset? With that offset I can run 245/45/17 tires in the rear and maybe the same in the front if I can determine they will fit or not. It is all about functionality at the track to me. I personally do not like to have my tires hanging out or anything else for that matter! So if I can tuck them in and use the entire wheel well that is great. Also have you tried to get bigger performance tires for your car lately in 15â€, good luck! That is one of the reasons that I am moving up to larger tires and wheels to get a better selection of tires. Not to mention I have to cover my Arizona Z brakes front and rear. sticky280zx
No problem here getting hoosier r6's in a 245 50 15 if im looking for comp tires (since you said "track" and i got a BFG TA (for 88 bucks a piece) in 245 60 15 (thicker sidewall for more flex on the street or track and is almost the same overall height/size as your 245-45-17)....looks like i have pretty good luck. And ofcourse its easier to find sizes in the 17 im just saying they still make them in 15 and i like a smaller wheel on a lowered car (coils arent installed yet) and when i step to a 17 i'll be going with the rota g/b on here and running my coils with flares...just wanting to keep it stock for now incase i sell it vs. cutting the body up to somone who wants a stock body. And i dont know why you bring up what "stock" wheels are...because obviously youre not looking for "stock" and most of us dont run 14's unless theyre just putting around (like my two sets, one for city/trips, the other is bare). But again in a 17x8inch wheel on a stock body z the better offsets to fill out the well/fender (even with the extra room from your coils) is going to be 0 thru a -5 to -10 without spacers and will still allow you to run a fat tire like a 245-255.
