z2go
Hey guys, I wanted to see if anyone has had any issues when bringing a smog exempt car back to normal op status after being non-operational for any amount of time, in the good ol' state of California. I plan on having my 72 back on the road in the next year, after 7 years of PNO registration... am I going to get flack from the DMV? Or will I just be able to send in the registration and go about my day?

Stealth-Z
If it is still in DMV's computer under non-op and you have all the paper work, no problem, just pay the fee's. If it is not in the system, then they will want to do a VIN check. Which means you have to take it to a field office. If that is the case, make sure you get the proper moving permit or have it on a trailer (two wheel dollies do not count). The last thing you need is CHP, Sheriff, or Police giving you a ticket for a non registered vehicle. Then DMV will want ALL fee's and penalties since the last time it was registered. Jon 74 260Z
My 74 was PNO'ed during the time it went smog exempt. Registered it a couple of years later without any problems (or smog checks). Note: The last registration date will still be in effect. iow, if your registration was due in Nov and you take it in next week, you will have to pay a full year's fee AND pay for another year in November. They don't prorate the annual fees nor do they "reset" the registration date when a car has been PNO'ed. BUT, the DMV's website (or a phone call to them) will give you more accurate info then internet opinions...
Stealth-Z
I just looked at the paperwork from my now deceased 78 Fairlady Z. It has been on non-op status since 2003. Every year they have been sending me renewal notices with the option to pay or leave it non-op. To leave it non-op you do nothing. On mine it required a smog check and the registration fee. So since you are emission testing exempt, just mail in the fee. Your new registration and tags will arrive in a few weeks. You may want to have it currently insured as well. DMV and the insurance companies are tied together. DMV will revoke your registration if there is no insurance listed for the vehicle. z2go
Go to http://www.dmv.ca.gov and find out. I did a thorough search of the DMV website, as well as the SMOG website, and I had a general idea of everything everyone pointed out... I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be in for a crazy surprise when I went to go operational. Thanks guys for the info!
psdenno
After 15 years of having my '71 Z in "non-op" status, all I had to pay was the prorated annual fee for the year I put it back on the road. No fuss or muss with the DMV. Dennis
