shifter action was real sloppy driving around town. decide to check out the shifter bushing to see what was going on, previously had broken the shifter bolt and e-clip driving hard, and replaced it with a long bolt and nut, was working so so. went to see what was going on, and decided to shim up the shifter with a washer, felt stiffer, was happy. went to the other room to grab a soda and came back, shifter was stuck.

went to check down again, pulled the shifter out, turned it around messed with it, now its ok? tightened the nut down, and boom, broke one of the dog ear looking things off the trans that hold the bolt that goes through the shifter handle, man i stink.

now heres my question, can this be welded back together enough to be confident, or do i have to get another trans somewhere? im pretty sure i needed a tranny anyway, it was hard shifting and i did all teh pedal adjustments and bleeding there could be done, last guess is that the rail was binding intrenally somewhere, it was shifting like a muncie four speed with worn out bushings.

Oh boy have I got a story for you. If you have the early Z 5 speed that is. I had one, and it became very difficult to shift. Ended up the rod in the tail shaft of the trans was broken. Replaced the tail section and it was all better. Of course you have to make sure all the forks line up.

I would not ever resort to using a bolt thru there. You should also be very wary of doing anything that adjusts the hieght of the shifter. Same as putting a Z shifter in a ZX transmission, or vice versa. You will end up with a jumping out of 5th gear tranny, which sucks.

If you know what kind of trans you have, I think replaceing the tail shaft part will be fine. You will have to find someone willing to sell you one though. I can help in that regard, but would have to know exactly what kind of trans you have.
