Steering Lock/Ignition Lock *bypass* ?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I recently picked up a 1979 Datsun 280ZX I drove it onto the trailer no problem but when we went to take it off the steering/ignition lock was engaged and wouldn't allow us to turn the key even to the accessory location. We "violently" rocked the wheel back and forth to get the key to turn in the ignition drove it off the trailer and parked it...now once again it won't allow us to turn the key. Is there a way to "bypass" or possibly permanently disengage the lock mechanism?

I've currently got the car parked at my work and just need to get it started or the steering unlocked so that I can back it up from the spot it's in at the far side of the front of the building to the closest spot to it on the side of the building but without being able to steer the car that becomes quite difficult.

Yeah, I find one of the easiest ways is to use a dremel with a cutting wheel. Grind a notch so you can fit a flat screwdriver in there and turn it out. Once you have the lock out, take it to a locksmith. They will be able to fix it up with a new key at a very resonable price.

Recently I had to do one on a Honda Accord and I read in the FSM that you had to drop the steering column ect.. PITA, then I found this video on youtube that really saved me a ton of time! It might work on a Z too?
