FricFrac
I searched on the topic but didn't find an answer so I'm cautiously asking - I have an '83 280ZX with an L28E. Apparently the injectors were replaced "recently" but there is a fairly loud ticking sound coming from the engine bay. It goes away after the engine has warmed up which makes me think its the exhaust gasket (there is also a broken exhaust stud closest to the firewall). I've been told that is probably the injectors but it seemed odd to me that it would go away once the car had warmed up. Is it normal for stock injectors to be noticeably louder when cold? Drax240z
You should be able to pinpoint the sound via a mechanics stethoscope or piece of vacuum hose to your ear... Much easier than trying to describe a sound over the internet. Injectors shouldn't change audible volume with temperature...
jeffer949
Id have to say that with a broke exhaust stud I would lean to the exhaust leak. Just kinda seeems simple considering that part of the manifold isnt even being clamped down.
Apex944
+1 to both posts above, ticking injectors don't go quiet after the engine is warm. As well as a broken exhaust stud is a clear sign of where an exhaust leak is occuring or will occur soon, as there's nothing clamping that part of the exhaust gasket down to keep it from blowing out and causing a leak. FricFrac
Thanks guys - that makes me feel better as it made more sense that it would be the exhaust to me as well. I'll find out for sure when I finish off my manifold and install it and the header on the car.
Drax240z
If it persists, maybe I can meet up with you and have a listen. Exhaust leaks are a fairly distinguishable sound once you hear a few.
