Questions on installing a dash harness

First I'll explain the situation of how I got here:

I bought my first Z wednesday last week, drove it home at night with all exterior lights working (headlights, turn signals, taillights, etc). However I didn't have any dash lights, which wasn't a huge problem. It sits overnight in a parking garage and when I turn it on and test everything, nothing works. Apparently the owner before the guy I bought it from was an "electrician" and re-wired all the fuses from instead of being in the fuse box in the center console, they are now installed on the passenger side firewall against the battery. Sorry for the long essay, now the question:

I have a dash harness to be installed, so the questions are: will I need to move the fuses back to the original location (being in the center console), and will this solve my no-tailight/turn signal problem? (the guy also wired the headlights to a separate switch in front of the ignition so thats not a problem). Also I can spin the wiper knob freely without the wipers working (completely horrible to drive in socal last week), would installing the harness fix that as well? As you can all tell, virtually no experience with old electronics

Search for "combo switch" and windshield wiper switch and learn as much as you can about the datsun wiring. Its not fun.

My problem was my own mistake and not seeing it, but the 3 days of tracing wires and reading up before I finally found my problem was worth it in experience and familiarizing myself with the painless wiring kit the previous owner installed in my car.

Good luck!

Wow I just searched the combo switch and holy cheese, thats a lot! I've seen the painless kit referenced on almost every thread I checked out, but I don't know anything about it other than its just a replacment harness (?). I'm thinking I might need to go that way seeing the prices of OE/rebuilt stock harnesses. Any pros/cons/opinions/etc about them?

The combo switch is easy to rebuild, search on classiczcars.com. There is a write-up with pictures that make it really easy to understand.

Regarding the painless wiring kit, I did not install it. The previous owner did because he did not trust the 35 year old wiring. I'm glad he did it because I dont have to do the work, just figure out he did. Most users (from what I've searched) seemed to have the most difficulty with connecting all the painless wiring to the combo switch/windshield wiper switch, hazard switch, turn signal,...etc.

Your post doesnt say much as to what is going on with your car...perhaps if you get specific with what is working and what isnt, it will help you narrow down your current problems, allowing you to search for possible ideas/fixes, and give you an idea as to what you need to do next and a gameplan for moving foward.
