Atilla the Fun
I'd like to hear from anyone and everyone who would be interested in swap mounts for the Z31s. Please specify whether you'd use the SBC, LS1 or Infiniti Q45 engine, and what you think a fair price would be. TIA.
Atilla the Fun
Come on guys, 11 views and no comments of any sort? Now I'm curious what you were either hoping or expecting to read?
DavyZ
You will get a lot less responses from the crowd since the Z31 is not the primary car of choice for doing engine swaps. Also, most "testing the waters" threads are getting tiresome---> Very few seem to make it to production ever and we don't allow vendors to pull money from the members before having an actual product to sell as per the rules due to the SNAFUs of the past. Your idea is a bad idea at all. You just have a much smaller niche of people to market to. If you believe in the business validity of what you can produce, offer them for sale with photos, etc, on a website and post the link here on HybridZ. "Build it and they will come," is the phrase you might consider. Your orders will never be huge, BUT you will get some buyers over time if you get the word out there. If someone was considering the swap and Googled it, when they only came across your website, who do you think they would buy from? Just my $0.02 Davy
zman6988
I agree with Davyz post some photos and what not. I am very interested in them, I'm doing a LT-1 with 4L60E swap and would love to see what you got to offer.
Atilla the Fun
Okay, here's the back story on this: My best friend owns an '87 300ZX Turbo with an auto and a stuck thermostat. It overheated and overheated, and now barely runs at all. But he found a job, and bought a fullsize Chevy pickup truck. He was gonna drive that while we fix his Z. But then the pickup's 350 engine had some problem. Well Brian had given me a running car at one point, so I owed him, and so gave him a good 350. We got that installed and running fine. So now the first 350 is sitting on an engine stand. Now, a year ago I got an LS1, and Brian said we should put it in his Z. I still have that LS1, and he still has the Z. Well, I discovered that there are no swap kits or parts for sale anywhere at any price, and I've done 26 or 27 different engine swaps. And I do metalfab pretty well. Brian is a computer programmer, and I've seen websites he's created. See where this is going? The 350 is going in first, and I make the parts while he makes the website under the name BaDspeed. (Brian and Dave). We split the costs and the profits 50/50. Then, once we get 20 people seeing the 350-into-Z31, and half of them buying while the other half asking for LS1-into-Z31 instead, inside of a week, that's all it takes. I can guarantee quality mounting parts for under $100/set. Brian set the number as 10, and we should be able to do all of that within 2 weeks of 10-hours a day, 5 days a week. Yes, I'm looking for requests I can show Brian, to give him a figurative kick in the butt. I'm not asking for cash deposits, only typed requests for quality parts at fair prices. He set the number at 10, so I'm putting this on 3 forums. 3 requests on each forum, then I show Brian. Otherwise it might take another year for his z to finally die entirely, and I'd rather get on this project this summer. I may be too busy later on. bleakdragonmage
Not to be a naysayer or anything, but Z31 owners are pretty DIY... At least the ones that peruse the forums. I say that because they/we have no choice BUT TO BE DIY... That said, Gen1/2 mounts for the Z31 arent exactly rocket science. I think you would get much more bite from an LS1...but then again, thats not terribly difficult either... Good luck.
stprasinz
I do agree that z31ers are diy. but for under 100$ for a bolt in v8 swap.... thats a seller there. I mean, imo that would save basicly all the headache of putting in the v8.... from there waht, headers, exhaust, fuel lines, and coolant lines thats an awsome price if you ask me!!!! tbolaz87
Heynow; I'm a fng just starting out with my '87 turbo. I'm interested in doing the swap; since it worked reaaly great in my old '72 240Z. I would love to see what happens in this big, heavy '87. I'm going to start simple (since I'm a simple-minded person)and go with a sbc w/ carburetor. I'll work out the kinks and maybe move up. So if you can save me some time with a motor mount swap; I'm in. Let's say ... $50 ea. would be a fair price.
5litre z31
Hi to all my contribution to this comes from my first hybrid was a z31 ausie 5litre v8 this was a diy as nothing was available to do it. So here we go this is my opinion the z31 swap was a much easier swap than my most recent 280zx chev main reasons being brakes you dont touch rear end you dont touch suspension you dont touch so all you change is the motor and gearbox as radiator with the adition of better fans is adequate add a one piece tailshaft and add a gear selector and off you go . Doing the 280 brakes not really good enough rear end needs to be upgraded to a r200 to handle any horses cooling system needs upgrading still need a gear selector and tailshaft electrics on both are simple (if not efi) hood clearance the same both cars. The exhaust on the z31 were a set of factory extractors against full fabrication on the 280 so I really think you are on a winner with your kit so dont just file and forget as these old cars will only get harder to find causing us all to go later models be patient it will happen. Pdfflyer
Okay, I'll join in Hi to all my contribution to this comes from my first hybrid was a z31 turbo v6 in a '86 2+2. Where are you located ? US ? State ? I would like to do a Q45 either 4.1 or 4.5 liter V8 the motor and gearbox as radiator with the addition of better fans is adequate add a one piece tailshaft and add a gear selector and off you go . Here's the story on this: I own an '87 300ZX Turbo with a 5 speed. See where this is going? How much ? We develop a kit to do the VH45DE. We split the costs and the profits 50/50. Then, once we get 20 people seeing the VH45DE-into-Z31, and half of them buying while the other half asking for LS1-into-Z31 instead, inside of a week, that's all it takes. You can guarantee quality mounting parts for the VH45DE for under $100/set. Set the number as 10, and we should be able to do all of that within 2 weeks of 10-hours a day, 5 days a week. What do you need $$ to get started ?

I have no idea if you are still wanting to make the V8 swap mounts for a Z31 but i figured id ask anyway. a buddy of mine has an old 350 from his nova that he and i are going to rebuild and then he was going to sell it but since i know that people have thrown the 350 into a z31 i figured id buy and do the swap. anyway let me know if there is still any interest in making these
