rb25det or rb26dett

im new and im not use to moving around the site yet and im sure this has been asked more then one im probably blind too, but im wondering would a rb25 or a rb26 be a better swap im just looking to have a bit of fun with it and still show the classics still need respect when around. i know the sky motors are amazing and hear people do it often so i thought i like to ask and the the opinion of the people that have done it over just reading one side of the story.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. If you read one of the top stickies entitled: "so you wanna swap an RB engine?" You'll fine a lot of useful info. I personally did an RB26 into my '71 Z and I'm pretty happy with it. Although I have said before that if I had to do it over again I would do an RB25. The reason is that these cars can't handle the power of a high horsepower RB26. I don't think anyone on here currently has an RBZ that has more than 600hp. One guy a while back had an insanely powerful RB30 which was strictly a drag car. So with the RB26 you are really just doing it for 'bling'. The RB25, with mild upgrades (injectors, standalone ECU, maybe a new turbo, and a good tune) will make your Z "$H!T your pants" fast.

ya i did read that forum a little after i posted and they did a rb26 sounded like it wasnt to bad and what not but i guess from the sounds of it the rb25 bolts better and all, and ya i not in it to much for the drag im sure ill take it to bandimere some day to see the quarter and all, but im a 22 year old that loves working on cars and i enjoy showing off what i do myself to a car on the friday night cruise and being slightly childish about this part but i like to prove to the kids it not always better to have your parents to drop 20k in a new car thinking it better then everything else and not knowing your own car. but im a bit stubborn on if you drive it you should know it. so ya i was thinking the rb25 myself its a lot cheaper to get a hold off and i know someone that makes custom wire harnesses cuz i dont like electrical to much ive never done much good on it hah

 

but its good to know what you think on the rb26 thats in your car now and better to know its way too much power to just make it a driver it seems and that you even having a rb26 would redo it if you had to, to a rb25 thank you very much

oh i was talking to a friend and he was saying that the rb25det has a power lag till the turbo spools unlike the rb26dett cuz it dont have a high and low turbo spooling, this true or no, if so would a hybrid turbo maybe reduce this kinda like the t3/t4 turbo does to the l28det? thanks

Thanks dwarlick for posting your honest opinion on a thread that I'm sure has been beat to death. Then brought back to life to only be beaten again. That's what I wanted to hear instead of just HP numbers and which engine has stronger hardware. Sounds like the RB25 gives you a decent grin factor per dollar ratio. However deep in my heart, when I take the '71 out to a late night lot meet, some armchair mechanic is going to ask, "Why not the GTR engine?"... :angry:

It all depends on which turbo you choose

the RB26DETT does not have "High and low turbo spooling" You seem to be describing a sequential twin turbo where all 6 cylinders run into a small turbo and then via a bypass to a big turbo. Low revs the small turbo keeps the boost up but when you floor it and the small one chokes, the bypass opens and the big turbo takes over to keep high RPM high Hp.

 

The RB26DETT is simply two equal sized turbos each with a cluster of 3 cylinders (front 3, rear 3) feeding into them, effectively the RB26DETT is a pair of 1,300cc 3cyl turbo motors sharing the same crankshaft and block...
