mutantZ
I was writing down a wish list for all the gauges I wanted and I realized I was running out of room on the dash for them–seeing as how I want to keep the stereo and the ac controls. So I did a search and came across people remote mounting their head units and rewiring their face plates to be placed just about anywhere they wanted. It probably looks simpler to do than it actually is (and is probably not as convenient to use), but I think it's a pretty cool idea for making room on the dash for more gauges (love them bells and whistles ). Anyone here do something like this? http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?39746-Stereo-remote-mounted-face-plate (scroll about halfway down for pics) and for an example of one that didn't go bad http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/car-audio/32881-remote-faceplate-turned-out-really-nice-check-out.html Edited August 14, 2010 by mutantZ
getoffmyinternet
I agree that it wouldn't be very difficult to remote mount a faceplate like that. In fact you could probably find a molex type extension that fits the stereo and plate directly so you wouldn't have to do any crazy wiring. That said, the mounting locations in both those pics are absolutely idiotic. Most people seem to get by with what they have while retaining functionality. Remote mounting is more for aesthetics than anything.
