Actually, a custom Targa like top has been designed and is almost ready for sale to Tomahawk Z owners. With some mods, a similar one probably could be designed to fit a coupe roof cut back to an acceptable position.

The design for the Tomahawk convertible kits utilizes the cut out center roof section of 280ZX cars.

You can see first photos of prototype at my ZPARTS.COM website at http://www.zparts.com/showcase/tomahawk/docs/hardtop_proto.html

I've been thinking about the targa top for my Z for some time now. But not a two piece one like on the tomohawk concept. I'm doing one more like on a Honda Del Sol. A one piece removable top that will store in the trunk when taken off. You can find a site with information on How to support your convert. at http://fonebooth.com/convtstory.html

This link was given to me by someone on this forum. This should be all the support that you need but, adding a roll over bar can only add more support and couldn't hurt anything. Good luck and I hope I beat you to it! 2thumbs.gif

If you guys get Sport Z Magazine, you will see a nice write up on the Scarab Z this month. What else you will see is a HUGE solid roof pannel...almost the whole roof is the pannel. This was called the Z lid. It was almost as big as the rear hatch glass area! Anyway, this was VERY well thought out, it was a light fiberglass roof, and it locked into a frame that also became the headliner on the inside. Sadly, very few were made...I have the top curved pannel but not the frame to hold it...which was slick and even had drain holes running in the frame track out to the "Z" side air vents. I'd love to find another, but I don't know why someone doesn't redo it. It was very slick, you cut out right to the reinforcement braces, but NOT thru them, and it was actually claimed to be STRONGER than the factory roof when installed, as the part replaced was wafer thin metal. Anyone have a used one, email me please, orif anyone wants some factory drawings and mine for a mold? I will be your first customer!
