Guest TAlchemist
i have a question for all those with either fuel cells with a cut out spare tire well or engineering skill. i have an 8 gallon plastic fuel cell and i am designing a box to hold it. also the battery and trunk mount kit will be mounted there to in a small box next to the cell. my question mainly is will 16 gauge sheet steel hold the tank in one box and battery in another? i want the boxes to have room for exhaust out both sides and i think my design is good and my welding is ok. i just need to know if the material will work. Tim240z
Yes it will. You can go thinner if you like. I used 18 gauge to hold my 16 gal cell. Tim
Guest TAlchemist
good, i am also planning on welding a 1x1 box frame to the rear deck to raise the boxes up a little and strengthen the hole. is that ok or overkill? do i need to do any special preperation to the surrounding metal or welding area other than wire brush to clean metal? should i go ahead and do a heat shield on each side for when i get the dual exhaust? Guest Zachb55
i would certainly do some sort of heat shielding, and keep your lines away from the exhaust as well, dont want a case of vaporlock! also, is the battery going to be close to the gas tank? be careful when it comes to filling it up if its right there, dont want any unnecesary explosions... -Zach
Guest TAlchemist
there will be a big 18x18 inch box for the fuel cell with 16 guage walls and then a 1x1 inch bar and another 7.5x13 inch 16 guage box for the battery the battery box will be sealed and vented outside. i plan on using the space between fuel and battery box to route the fuel line, way clear from exhaust. Guest TAlchemist
will there be any battery issues with them in seperate boxes? also can you connect a filler neck to a cell? my idea is to get one of those slick hagen fuel caps mounted on the rear deck and have it go through a small filler neck dirrectly into the cell? Owen
There shouldn't be any problem with the boxes separate, in fact it's best that they are. As for filler necks, that's been discussed over and over here, do a search and take a look at Terry's setup. Owen
Guest TAlchemist
thanks with a little luck and a lot of money might get my car over to the georgia z thing...
Guest Anonymous
May I ask what you are planning on to surface the sheet metal ie paint, powder, or what? Also, lay pics on us if you have a digital camera if you get a chance. I would like to see how you preped the hatch area. thanks and good luck with the project. Guest TAlchemist
just gonna hamerite it like the rest of the intereor, i like the look and strength of the paint. yes i will have pics as soon as i can and as soon as i can find a place to put them. i am making a mock up in card board to insure i have space and cut just enough...all i have done so far is to cut the spare tub out and practice welding by build a mig cart for my new welder. Guest TAlchemist
i was wondering about the 3 supports that tied in from the frame rails to the old spare tub. what should i do with them? will it be strong enough if i just tie the frame for the boxes into each support with a peice of 16 gauge sheet? my box frame will not connected to the rear frame just the rear deck or do i need to get more elaborate and do something else? Guest TAlchemist
ok well i have been sizing things up and planning my welding process out. i have wondered wether i should remove the entire rear deck from frame rail to frame rail and weld in a single peice of 16 gauge steel. that is thicker than the current steel in the back and ties it into all frame rails. then i would have a clean and flat place to mount the box frame and fuel cell. Guest TAlchemist
well i have nearly finished cutting out the rear deck. it was scary, so scary to cut into my pretty car. But then i think of how sweet the cell and battery tray will look in a new solid rear deck. i bought a nibler to cut out the metal and shape the new deck plate. harbor freight rocks. pictures tomorow if i can find a place to host them, my provider is suposed to.
