Solenoid placement for shaved door handles?

Hey guys, i just bought a shaved door handle kit with 35lb solenoids and 2 door poppers.

I know that some people on the board have shaved door handles, and i was just wondering where the best place in the door is to mount the solenoid.

oh, it's on a 77 280z

Thanks for your time,

Joe

I just took a closer look inside of my doors and discovered that i may have to mount the solenoid to the inner metal skin of the door and run the wire to the rod for the inner door handle... which will make my door handle on the inside jump when i activate the solenoid... not a real desireable idea, especially with 35 lb solenoids(i may have been a bit overzealous on my choice for solenoid strength, i hope the door internals can take it).

There is also a large support beam in my door that looks like i may be able to mount there without interference with the window operation. But there may be a problem with placement then, because the solenoid and latch would be near parallel. Maybe if i could mount it on the bottom of that support, i have to go take another look...

if anyone has knowledge of how to make a nice clean install of one of these setups, your input would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Joe

I just looked at the door and realized the only place i may be able to put the solenoid, is right where the interior door handle is mounted... I'll have to fab up a bracket or something, unless i can put it in front of the door handle...

hmmm, it might not be a great idea to completely do away with the interior door handles...

this isnt going to be as easy as i had hoped...

I just figured it out...

If i cut out a small section of the door (2 1/8"x5") on the interior, right in front of the door handle, then cut my mounting plate to 2" wide, and weld a 3"x6" or so sheetmetal plate (12-14 gauge) to the back of the mounting bracket and then use some sheet metal screws to secure it to the inner door panel and run the pull wire right to the eyelet that the inner door handle runs to.

I think that it will be a perfect fit...

I'll let you know in a week or so how it works out (i dont have a welder at my house so i am having a friend in Redding do the welding...)

sleep time,

joe

If you look on my link you will see that my handles are shaved.

What i did was welded the brackets that came with the solenoids to the bump that was on the door skin, were the out side door handle was.

then used moutain bike shifter sleve to gide the solenoid cable.

Here are some pics of my brackets and solenoids, And a picture of the bracket installed. Also a picture of my door popper installed.

So far everything has gone pretty smooth...

(i had to drill a hole into the interior of the car in order to allow the door popper to clear when compressed.Unfortunately, as you can tell i had horrible lighting, and i dont have any good pictures of the extra hole.)

I'll let you guys know how everything goes tomorrow, or sunday... (I have to drive to Chico again! *sigh*)

Thanks,

Joe
