  1. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

Spent some time on the Z this weekend. Dropped the engine back in. Tided up a few loose ends. Triple measured the rear diff again.
  2. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

Well with wfritts911 gone MIA, I've been left to develop my own Ford 8.8 Swap kit. This thread is the progress of the design and production. Design is based on a 2002 Ford Explorer's 31 spline 8.8 inch independent rear diff. I'm using drive shaft shop stub axles, they're not currently listed on their site, however you can call and order them. *Note* though the ford cobra rear is almost the same, the axle seal diameters are different, and are not interchangeable. At the moment I am prototyping the parts. I have yet to source materials or get quotes from machinists. In the end these should be 6061 Aluminum. Rear mounts. Using Energy Suspensions Urethane bushings for the 240z. 3D printed the prototype to check fitment. There a great bar here in dayton called Proto BuildBar, they have a wall of 3D printers, a 3d scanner, soldering stations and all sorts of electrical supplies, its a geek's heaven. Designed up the mustache bar specifically to the ford explorer's cover. (not the cobra sorry) Then had it cut out on my friend's router table. The front mount is a modified ron tyler mount. I dont have images or photos of it yet. Thats about the progress I have made so far, will keep you all posted!
  3. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

Oh my guys, I'm sorry I'm a slacker here. I've been out touring Germany/Austria/Czech for just short of a month, and came back and have been too busy to keep rolling on the car. I had a friend just last week laser out my front mount, I found one of my measurements off. It'll involve scrapping the two bushing mounts I had CNC'd already. I should be able to get that squared away in the next two-three weeks. I'll be out again for a week at september 15th hiking banff national park just west of Calgary, Canada.

I had planned on doing all with black powder coat on cradle and front mount, but if someone wants raw I can probably put one aside. Eventually. I tried a couple other waterjet/machine shops local as well, but each failed to produce a quote, or I was too small of quantity. A friend recommended teamzmotorsports, and they were lowest price (still) and they were even going to do the powder coat. But its actually getting done now, so thats good. Its in there! Hopefully Ill get this back in there soon, too:

Rough drawing of the Front mount is post 37 in this thread http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/125328-ford-88-irs-swap-v20/?p=1184915 I've already made some changes to it, but that'll be pretty close to it. I was unsure about the sandwiched plate as well, but after talking to the owner at SelfMadeFab he said its something they've done previously without issue.

Its the wife's new car! RHD Rover Mini. Imported from Japan, rust free and only 28000km on the odometer. Picked it up for her on our 6 year anniversary, the "traditional" 6 year present is iron... so i went for old iron

I have it drawn up, but not cut, I wanted to get the rear in and bolted up first to double check my front mount location's height for driveline angle.
  9. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

Just picked up the flat plate today from the plasma cutter. I had to run my drill press to clean up the bolt holes, but otherwise its a perfect fit so far. I hope to get it bolted in this weekend to finish my front mount this upcoming week or two. *Also thats my wife's classic mini cooper in the background, I just had it imported this April.

  11. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

Quick update. Dropped teamZmotorsports. Working with selfmadefab.com just north of Dayton for the cradle, and a CNC shop in New Carlisle for the bushing mounts. Should have the bushing mounts in my hand by next week.

I'm still around. STILL WAITING ON teamzmotorsports.net I've gone ahead and found another supplier for the CNC bushing mounts, here in Ohio, and at half the cost as team Z. However their flat plate cutting and powder coating was the best quote I had.
  13. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

slow, team z is painfully slow to work with. I'm checking other suppliers while i wait.

Create your own thread for this. Please.

Perhaps more reliably: theres is usually stamped metal tag on the rear cover (of most) ford 8.8 diffs. Mine had 3L73 stamped on it, which translated to 3.73 limited slip.

PM replied. Measure for fuel cell at your stock dimensions, my diff swap will make no major difference there. Sorry I dont add folks on FB unless I've met them.
  17. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

Nope. My (re)design is avoiding interference the rear uprights. Answer and update: Answer: likely not, since they dont have my car do their own engineering and testing for it. Update: I have a single run quote that they're working on right now for my test fit on my car, then they're pricing me making 10 vs 20 sets. Getting a little agitated getting direct answers in a timely mannor, I keep dealing with Sherri (wife of the owner and sales manager), I should really be talking directly with Dave the owner.

Hows that blue car looking? Got a turbo in that engine compartment yet?
  19. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

yes- those will have gusset plates, but just inside, past the mounting holes.
  20. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

ROUGH drawing of the front mount. Ron Tyler style, extended back, bracket on top to mount an adjustable rod end and separate bracket to tunnel.
  21. Ford 8.8 IRS swap v2.0

Hi all, I could use a measurement if anyone has Ford Explorer 8.8 differential from a 2007-2011. (or any others that has two front mounts) My diff only has the front mount on one side, so I need the measurement of the distance between the two front mounts, (center to center) if anyone has calipers large enough to get that, I'd be super thankful!

Due to slight differences in the Inner CV mounts between Cobra and Explorers -- I'm only looking at providing the mounting hardware. Axels, etc. is all up to you guys. I'll provide lengths based on what I use once I get my parts back from teamZmotors and can mount everything. I used the driveshaftshop's Ford Explorer 8.8 inner CV mount for 108mm or Porsche 930 CV joint. I think it was $500~ for the set. Numbers below: 108-FD-I-31 Ford Cobra to 930 Stub 108-FD-I-31-2 Ford Explorer to 930 Stub The bushing mounts I'm having made are similar to ArizonaZ, TechnoToyTuning, and Whitehead, I dont know what bushing they use, but mine are based off of Energy Suspension 7.1102G.

Sorry all, I'm extremely slow with remodeling my home at the same time. GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE teamzmotorsports in Michigan has my designs as of this week and are working on on the fabrication work.
  25. That is CX racings kit sold by someone else on EBay. I HIGHLY recommend Hoke Performance's setup. It works with both long tube makers: Hawks headers and CX Racing. Here it is on his site: http://hokeperformance.squarespace.com/store/s30-ls2-engine-mounting-kit
