what type of plug and where exactly are you talking about. I think this engine had a rebuild (from an unknown source) that didn't know l28 engines (ie the timing was 180 out down at the oil pump/dizzy shaft)I'm all for not taking off the head, but a misalligned head gasket has crossed my mindwouldn't it seem like you would still get SOME oil out of the cam lobes or not?thanks allBrian78 engine stock (i presume - least that is what it came from)internally oiled cam

I got my 76 running on sunday with a stock 78 motor. I didn't think about it at first (till i heard squeaking), but my cam wasn't getting oiled properly. I guess the oil pump became unprimed while the engine sat (years maybe??) I've got a new pump I'm putting in tomarrow and hopefully the cam isn't wiped.Anybody have this happen before after an engine sitting for along time?

I just got my car 76 running with a stock 78 engine/5speed tranny combo.everything had been sitting for months. I made sure everything had fresh oil in it but when i start my engine, tranny in neutral, I get a loud squeeling sound out of the tranny. Put it into any gear and you get the same thing. What do you think this could be? I was thinking something basically had a dry startup even though i had plenty of oil.didn't replace the clutch or bearing because they were good, just changed the pilot bushing. Thanks for any ideas.Oh yeah - I got it running on sunday, and today we have snow (NE) what irony

Haven't gotten to tear into my motor yet, but check out what I found... http://www.saabperformanceparts.com/item107.htm Hopefully its just that. For now, I'm putting a stock motor back in and little by little going over my turbo motor and building a MS&S w/harness. Rather drive my car stock than not at all Thanks for your help(replies) Brian

I have a 280z that i put an 82zx turbo motor in. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it and finally decided to pull the engine to work on it ( and put a stock motor in just so I could drive the car). When i pulled the downpipe there was oil in it. I haven't gotten to rip the turbo off or tear it apart, but i think I'm going to find a leaking oil line. Anybody had a problem with this? Oil leaking into the turbo? I'll let you know what I find.

don't hook those wires backwards. you'll fry the transistor.but if you do...early to mid 80's sentras use the same type of system. thats where the one came from that i'm running.
-
I finally got my zxt running again. Turns out old sentras (mid 80's) have the same transistor (but different wiring) as the zx turbos. Now I'm back to the same old problem of running way to rich. Floods out at idle.lets see, heres the listall electrical connections cleanedall sensors tested and/or replaced with known good onesengine ran great when it was still in the zxt. All the turbo wiring.what is the difference between the z and zxt fuel pumps?what does the fuel damper actually due, and can i turn the fuel psi up and down with it?the car runs smooth when i rev it up to where the boost comes on, but it still smokes like hell.no exhaust past downpipe if that mattersthanks for the help. ps-don't need the usual check your connections post

can you take a three wire TPS off a newer nissan and bolt it to the side of the zxt throttle body? or do i need to get an entire tb? thanks

Found this site while looking around. This is a badass Z! http://www.zparts.com/showcase/engines/pages/q45v8z-testfit.html

I realize there is plenty of engine bay room, but how much work did you have to do to bolt the manifold to the head? was it pretty close between the toyota I6 and the nissan? It'd be pretty cool if we could start using toyota aftermarket support.

what do you guys think of this one... I have an 85 720 pickup 4x4 that needs a new motor. I was kindof thinking of an sr turbo running MS&S. How well do you guys think this would work? Are these motors mostly horsepower or do they have a little low end too? the 720's have 4.11 gears BTW so whata think? redtop in a red 4x4?

Anybody think its possible to use a gm HEI module on stock zxt electronics? When you hookup the MSD to the stock wiring which wire do you use to trigger the MSD? before or after the power transistor? Thanks
-
How many of you have run the extra on your zxt motors? is there a big difference compared to the older version? I'm just trying to decide which way i want to go. Thanks Brian

Maybe somebody will read this here that can get me an answer or two - hopefully 82zxt motor, all stock EFI what is the voltage output from pin 5 of the ecu to the power transistor (on the side of coil bracket) and/or does anybody have a good, current part number for that transistor? this info would be great, thank you in advance Brian
-
how bout anyone knowing the exact specs of the transitor on the coil bracket forward biased/reverse biased npn, pnp input voltage even a part ## I can't find a cross reference listing for the nissan part transistor thank you anyone
-
Does anyone know the output of Pin 5 (out to the transistor) from the ECCS on for a ZXT? Mine shows .05v DC and 0. Is this correct or not? Thank you very much. I'm almost ready to scap the stock EFI and go MS&S

Silent, Where did you get the hood, i like it my 76 doesn't have any bumpers either, looks better without
-
well, i pulled the distributor and spun it. I can hear the injectors ticking, but still don't get any spark. what is the VDC supposed to be from the ecu pin 5 when you spin the distributor?
-
I've officailly been through every post under this forum and haven't found any new info (unless i happened to miss it - i'm only human) what is the pin5 output voltage supposed to be? what could cause it to not be this? I have two ECU's with the same #s 0vdc in off, .05vdc in on coming off the distributor, which wire is the spark ( 6 times per revolution) output signal, that i could use with a different Ignition module? Any and all help would be great. Thanks, Brian

I haven't been on here for awhile since my wife is pregnant, and we moved last month, but now I can work on my toy again. Its not running as you could guess. lets see, to update. 76 280z/82ZXT swap using 82 harness. I hooked up the wiring as it is in the standard posts everyone preaches about. It ran rich( enough to flood the engine ) for a couple days. Then it just wouldn't start. NO SPARK I know the coil is good because i've used it in a different car. I have two ECU's (I thought that was the problem so i bought one from a know good car) AFM has been tested according to FSM my injectors do fire so I would say the Dizzy is good. This led me to the tranistor. My tansistor was physically bad (broken pin) I found one at radio shack for about $2, but couldn't plug it straight in since my mount was messed up. I soldered leads to my new transistors emittor, base, and case(gnd), then wired it into the car the way my diagram shows. The pin5 wire from the ecu shows 0vdc when off, and .05vdc when on. I have constant vdc to the coil + constant vdc to ecu+ correct vdc to ecu start 12v heres the problem - NO SPARK does anybody have any suggestion? are ther anyways to bypass/eliminate the tranisstor with an HEI and still use the stock ECU for the injectors? I've searched and searched but haven't figured it out yet. Any and all help would be great! Thanks again Brian PS. Any body near NE

I everybody. Figured I'd post this here. I have a 76280z with 82zxt motor and wiring harness. Motor cranks fine, getting fuel flow from injectors, but no spark. The coil itself is good, but I'm not sure how to test the mag. pickup in the dizzy. I also don't think I'm getting correct output from the ecu. Should be pin 5 from the ecu to the transistor on the side of the coil. I changed the transitor out. Just to let you know, I've checked all wiring and it is good. My conclusion: Mag pickup in distributor, or ecu. what is the best way to test and find out. What meter readings should i be getting at different outputs. Thank Brian
-
I do have power to the start signal (y or yw i forget) from the black/blue as the start signal. The injectors do fire while cranking so power should be good. Thanks though Brian

I'm finally at wits end with this zxt motor. All wiring is good, injectors fire fine(so the sensor in the dizzy is good), good coil, but no spark. I talked to a nissan mechanic today who's been working on these things since new. Best he and i can figure, my ECU is toast. Does anyone have a known good 82/83zxt ECU i could buy for a decent price? I sortof want to go with megasuirt, but it just seems that another few hundred bucks, plus trouble involved, i might as well drop in a V8 for some good power (they are easy to wire up, plus sound awsome) I wanted to stick with the whole z motor in a z thing, but i'm just looking at power vs money vs amount of head banging a wall. Help, suggestions, ideas.....anything youve got Thanks, brian if anyone feels like it, my cell is 402-305-4678 if nothing else, there may soon be some z engines and trannys available(-ecu)

I know there are posts about enging mounts and all that, but i helped a friends the other week pull a 302 from a late 80's cougar. Seems to me all you'd have to do is weld a piece of 2x3 metal stock to the z frame rails and bolt the mounts to it. It looks simple. Just set the height by where you weld the crossmember. Just my 2cents Brian

Alright everybody. 76 280z with the 82zxt swap sortof running. I know everything started out fine since i drove the donor car. Now in the 76, it runs so rich it floods itself out. I kept thinking i checked everything until i noticed something. I have the stock(76) fuel pump running off of 12 switched power, not through the relay and therefore not the pump modulator which is connected to the computer. I'm planning to hook everything up according to the diagram but do you think this could be my problem? Could the eccs think the fuel pump isn't running, therefore run the engine way to rich or in limp mode? What does everyone think? Thanks as usual, Brian
