  1. I am using a B&M sport shifter. You can also use the true ratchet style shifter if you want. Try a basic search for B&M shifter (here is an example): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=595697849
  2. i saw an ad for stainless rocker panels for a z in either motorsport of victoria british... i was wondering, have any of you guys done this transplant or is there something wrong with it? right now i have the rocker area painted black but would like the shinier appeal of the stainless. "she's got a gold tooth, you know she's hardcore. she'll show you a good time then she'll show you the door" thanks, Patrick
  3. thanks for the advice, yeah, the panels would just be a dress up.... so you think i would have to cut out the originals (very slightly rusted) and weld in the new ones? eeeeeewwww.
  4. i don't know too much about turbos. But wouldn't you need to lower the natural compression of the engine and/or O-ring the pistons in order to make a reliable setup (for racing)? this is a common problem with the I-6 engines if i am not mistaken.
  5. I currently have wheels on my 280 with inherent clearance issues when i hit a bump or accelerate too hard. the reason is that the offset is incorrect (moron prior owner put them on). they "pop" out too much, too much - offset i think. point is, can anyone suggest the best wheel offset to run 215/60/15's with stock-size springs? i plan on buying new rims. TIA Patrick
  6. as long as your harmonic balancer is less than like 8 inches you dont really need it. but clearance will be an issue with the hood latch bracket, so make sure to use the removable setup. the spacers kinda screw things up (found this out after installation). it just makes your oilpan lower to the ground and slightly alters the steering. if you dont have to use them to squeeze it in, then don't.
  7. I WANT I WANT But seriously, thats tooooo many ponies. Like half of that horsepower would be cool. But for a daily driver the gas mileage would be stellar.
  8. a little fuel for the fire in the previous reply: chevys are the ones said to be like a rock.
  9. I would like to think that i have the mechamackanikal aptitude in my blood that some of you guys have. I AM good with my hands and this z conversion is going to be my second real car project. I have already rebuilt the engine in my 77 coupe once. And then........ I came to realze that they are undependable (at least MY engine was). This is a pretty good reason to upgrade in permance/dependability to the chevy in my opinion. Oh, I'm currently studying civil engineering and, like many of you guys, am also interested in computers. Thats all the time I have for now, Patrick
  10. so lone and pete, are you guys both engineers in profession? im currently studying that same craft. i hope to someday get my z project underway, as im currently attending school here in good old champaign-urbana, IL. come on summer, come on! Cheers to all, Patrick
  11. they (jpl) had a successful test of a small scale scram-jet recently.
  12. yeah, for the least amount of mods go with the 280Z. they are stronger (slightly) and will be easier to find, being the most numerous 1st gen. out there. Also, they have the round dashes. I believe the 280ZX of 1979 was the first to have the flat dash. hope this helps Patrick
  13. sorry no tech advice, but holy poo is that a fast 71 Z. Im impressed. You should have no prob getting the 350 in as you have (apparently) done similar swaps before. good luck, guy
  14. yeah, kevin, i hope you never personally just blot things together!!!! i like to bolt things, myself. fecetiously yours, pat
  15. stupid question: why would you want to shift while moving with the automatic? you guys put your cars in low gear for a launch when youre racing? im still just getting set up for the conversion, so i definetly dont know how the auto will work with the z.
  16. well stock shifter is on the column so thats not gonna happen.
  17. c'mon, two questions and no replies!
  18. where would i be able to find a good floor shifter for a 700 R4? at the junkyard or can i buy one? if at the junkyard, what cars had them (this may be a very general question)? thanks in advance
  19. thanks a lot, guys....screw the 305 im going for a real 'rice' pony car
  20. im just now looking into converting my 78 from inline to v8. ive had the car now for a couple of years and got tired of having to try to keep up with punk neons! my question is: i have easy access to a 78 305 carb. engine/transmission, so should i use this if its in good shape or look elsewhere for a 350? im not going for a street rod so maybe the 305 is an option. i really dont even know what kinda power a 305 like i said would produce. Any Ideas?
