  1. I understand the enviromental implications and such and yeah, something does need to be done.. But I greatly dislike being FORCED to take my car to some other asshat to have work done I can do myself. Some of us - even if we could afford to have it done - would do it ourselves just 'cause we can.

I'm going to school for Auto Body starting in January, so one way or another I'll be in the refinishing industry in a couple years anyway, so I'll be able to paint my car(s) through whatever shop I'm working at (or own) but the principle still stands.

As to the home painter.. Are there any studies on the amount of toxins this person releases into the air/water/ground? I mean, the average person cant paint more than one car a year.. Most poeple just buy the stuff and do it one time to their own car. The poeple who do this are also few and far between.. The average guy doesnt get into an accident and stand up and say "BY GOD! ILL REPAIR AND PAINT THE CAR MYSELF! HEAR HEAR! THREE CHEERS FOR ME!" Its the hobbyist thats going to invest to money and time to buy and learn the equipment - there arent *that* many of us out painting our own cars. I dont see home-brew painters as an epidemic level problem.

What kind of collective damage is caused by us? I'd like to know. If its some staggering amount and it turns out that by primering my car I'm giving birds and local school kids liver cancer or poisoning the local water supply and causing an apocolyptic loss of life at local old-folks homes - then I'll stand up and stop what I'm doing in a heart beat. But I want to be damn sure this is getting put into effect to see TANGIBLE benefits and not just to centralize the use to specific poeple for EASE of regulation. I dislike being punished because other poeple have made a mistake.. And thats what this feels like.

Another thing.. Would it be possible to sell (they could make some money.. someone could anyway) some type of paint disposal kits? SO the home brew painter with a thought to the damage he may cause could pay a few extra bucks and get some kind of package designed to make his spraying safer? Alot wouldnt adhere to this of course, but some of us would. And just what that kit would entail I couldnt say, because I dont know the enviromental risks that well. MAybe some kind of absorbant foam/material you could use to mop up the paint-water when you clean up afterwards, or maybe some kind of filter you could attach to whatever fan(s) your using for ventillation that would trap some of the crap we dont want in the ait (if that could be done..) and proper information distributed to poeple on where to take the paint waste for disposal.

I dont understand the problem well enough to make any type of educated statements.. Those are just my opinions and are probably easily refuted.. but thats the way I see it.

  2. Hehe,

Jeff sleeps in the bed with me at night. It takes some getting used to and training (for owner and dog both) but it does work.. Its just tough. Jeff is really mild mannered. Hes great around cats, kids, poeple in general. If someone comes around he doesnt know and I'm not here, he gets a little pissed, but even then he wont really bite, he just growls and bares his teeth - which is more than enough to scare most poeple away, lol.

Land mines? More like a-bombs. Thats the one downside to him.. He craps often and lays down some poundage. He had diarhea (sp?) for like 4 days once.. God I was on the verge of taking my own life.

Mike, He doesnt eat anywhere near what you'd think. As a Mastif grows (oddly enough) they dont eat much. A friend had a Husky the same age as Jeff that ate about the same amount a week that he did. Once he stops growing though their intake nearly doubles.

  3. I apologize if this post is irrelevant and foolish. It has nothing to do with Z's or cars in general.

    Anyway..

I weighed my dog earlier today and he tips the scales at 195pds! HAH! Closing in on 200pds, and by the time hes fully mature he could see as much as 215-220. We'll see at any rate. He currently stands a hair under 3 feet tall at the shoulders. His head tops the 3 foot mark and when he stands straight, its about 3 1/2 feet. He's 4 feet 1 inch long from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail Over 5 feet long from tip to tip. His head alone is about 9 inchs wide and 10 1/2 inchs from nose to the back of his skull. His neck is 26 1/2 inchs around.

He'll be two in January and Mastifs continue growng until their about three. Well, their upward growth stops around a year and a half, but they continue to fill out 'till three. His name is Jeff the Vastly Talented.

Sorry for the pointless post - but my dog, my cat and my car are the three things I am most proud of... And Jeff hitting the 200+ mark is something I greatly want to see. Just conveying my enthusiasm.

The pics dont do him justice. I just snapped em real quick (the one where hes outside is older.. he weighed about 175 then). I'm gonna try to get some pics of him standing up. He'll rear straight up for a treat or when Im playing with him and when he does hes taller than me, which would put him about 6"1 or so, hehe.

  4. Its raging crap. Extreme, raging crap.

Breaks down pretty simply really. Why would they do this? To get poeple to beta test thing? Why? MS has ALOT of employees, so does AOL, inhouse beta would be cake, then release it to the public with tracking crap built in to keep track of the browser, send status reports, etc. Those would go to some host server that would process them electronically most likely and print some form of status sheet based every so many thousand reports (or whatever).

Or just do what MS usually does and release beta edition software and claim its live and complete, only to slowly release updates and fixes for all the crap that was wrong with it. Beta testing the Microsoft way!

Its the same retarded scam thats been passed around for years now - Its just formatted a little differently.

  5. I havent heard good things about Snap-On welders. The general consensus regarding welders is to stick with the big names.. Hobart/Miller, Lincoln and Esab (some poeple dislike Esab for one reason or another.. I have no opinion, they seem fine to me).

Really, for home use I dont know that it matters much. I actually wish I had gone with a non brand name welder from HF or the like so I could have gotten one that came gas ready. I bought a little Lincoln that I really like, but for the use that it sees, I think I over did it. But for shop use, I'd go with one of the big guns ALL the way.

    Edit,

Are you going to school for auto body or auto mechanics? I start school for auto body in January.. I wonder if a similar deal will ever be available to me.. hehe.

  6. My thinking is.. dont fight it.

I cant speak towards the possible credit implications to pleading no contest.. But what is there to fight? You dont know if you did or didnt do what the cop said so I dont see you being able to mount any type of reasonable defence.. And really, I see a judge getting a whole lot madder and more likely to lay the smack down if you go in trying to make excuses and wheedle out of any responsibility.

Really, cops arent nearly as bad as poeple make them out to be and if he pulled you over chances are good you did atleast close to his claim. Ive always been a firm beleiver in just owning up when you **** up and get caught.

  7. I did a search through images but couldnt find a suitable picture of a transmission tunnel that was stripped to act as a comparison peice.

I'm just asking this out of curiosity.. It seems at some point in my Z's life it was wrecked. As I dig deeper into it I'm noticing alot of seams in the car on the drivers side looked a little beat up.. Looks like someone beat them back into place. Some repaired damage in the front of the frame as well. Couple other places.. etc etc. Basicly it took a pretty nasty hit at some point and was repaired. It really seems they did a very good job though.. So I hold out hope the frame is straight and car isnt tweaked. Given my history with this particular car and the whole RHD/Fairlady thing I'm going ahead with this project regardless..

    But, I'm rambling.

Below is a pic.. the little red lines Ive so expertly drawn on mark the areas where the tunnel seams are. The tunnel seems to be layed over and some type of glue/sealer is used with a few tack welds to mate it all together.

Again, this is just from a curiosity standpoint.. Is it supposed to be this way or is this a result of repair at some point?

  8. If some of the rims are good you could probably get a few bucks for those.. Interior peices are often worth a little as well. I cant say from experience with a Vette but a friend of mine and I make a little side money by buying and parting out DSM's (Eclipse/Talon/Lasers) and I'm always suprised at the weird crap poeple buy off of them.

Is the interior leather? If it is, did that era of Vette come with a non-leather interior? Top-end interior peices like the seats, sometimes carpets and the like sell well and for a pretty penny. Alot of poeple get cars with the cloth interior and convert it over.

Seems to me like there would be a market for very nearly everything salvagable on the car, seeing as its a Vette and nearly 20 years old to boot. 20 years mean the cars poeple are buying used should have some wear and tear and will be in need of replacement parts.. =]

  9. That car is absolutely amazing.

Just curious.. What color is that? My monitor is a little tweaked and always has been.. I cant tell if its a grey or black or something else entirely.

I agree with everyone else.. I think your asking too little. If I had the loot I'd snatch that sucker up in a heartbeat. Would ya take a check? Just make sure not to try and cash it until I have firm possesion of the vehicle.. hehe.

  10. I will be fabricating my rails and pans from scratch. I like this option as it will allow me to tailor the materials to my needs and insure everything fits correctly. I also enjoy being able to say I made them myself. That and I greatly enjoy the whole process involved in it.

Steel is a little more costly as of late for one reason or another, but I expect to be able to get the material I need (and a vast amount extra) for something like 160-200$ total. This will consist of one 4x8 (or 4x10, I dont remember the minimum size I was told they would sell) 18g sheet steel and 24ft of 2x3in .081 square tube steel (24ft being the minimum I was quoted they would sell). To answer your question more directly, I beleive for the sheet metal alone I was quoted 54-85$ depending on the supplier.

It helps to call several different suppliers in your area and check prices. You may find the sheet to be much cheaper at one suppilier than another. When I did my price checking I found a 10-15$ disparity (sp?) in the price between different shops. It may be alot cheaper to get the sheet and tube from different sources.

The website posted with the framerail info on it its very similar to what I'll be doing. 240hoke, a member here has a website dedicated to the buildup of his Z. He has a section on the repairs he did to his frame rails and pans. I'll be pretty much copying what he did with a couple minor changes. I'd check out his website if I were you, its very informative.

I cant speak for the quality and fit of the products you mentioned though, as I have never used them.

  11. Sounds great man.

Few things can beat just getting out and kinda losing yourself cruising around. I havent headed off in a while myself. My truck gets about 15mpg, probably less when its angry at me (often) so since it became my only means of transportation I just havent been able to wander around like I used to. Grab some good music and meander.

I live in Ky and we have some great roads and beautiful country here.. When I had my little POS Paseo and Lumina (r.i.p) I probably covered 2k miles a year wandering around the back roads. I got lost so many times..

Glad you enjoyed it, sounds like it was a blast.

  12. I hope my little project site isnt one of the problem build-ups.. If I'm doing something drastically wrong, and posting on my site/here that its a proper method.. I'd really like someone to slap me in the mouth and say "Hey idiot, your stupid, do it (insert proper way here)"

  13. I'm 23, will be 24 in March and I've been in two accidents. I wasnt driving either time. One was a friend of mine not paying attention, I tried to warn him but by the time I realized he wasnt gonna slow down it was simply too late. One was getting rear-ended while sitting at a stop sign.

I've been driving since I was 15 when a friend gave me a peice of raging crap CRX Si with no back-end, exhuast or hope for the future. I spent something like an hour to two hours a day drivng it cautiously around my neighborhood at night. Not crazy, careful stuff. I read the little drivers ed handbook thing about 150 times and spent a hell of alot of time teaching myself to drive the little thing (was a stick with a borked clutch.. talk about a learning curve). I slowly worked my way onto main streets, and eventually downtown. (its only downtown lexington, but it was the best I could do) I'm hyper-attentive on the road and very careful. I drive at exactly 8mph above the speed limit on highways/large roads and drive dead on the limit in town. In areas I know to be problem spots I sometimes go a little slower is traffic permits.

8 almost 9 years behind the wheel and Ive managed to avoid any accident of any kind. I've never received a ticket or even been pulled over. I have driven stupidly, but I got over that crap real quick and now do all my idiot driving in very controlled circumstances.

Sometimes theres nothing you can do, and no matter how good you are, your gonna get hit by someone else due to stupidity but if your careful and PAY ATTENTION TO OTHER DRIVERS you can see a hell of alot of problems coming and head them off. I dont know how many times Ive avoided dings, minor hits and two very serious potential collisions. Paying attention to yourself and fellow drivers = good thing.

  14. VERY impressive.

Jesus but that gives me hope. I'm a mediocre driver so I probably wont ever see times anywhere in relation to yours but the setup is something I will be very close to when I'm done.

    That is spectacular man, congrats.

Just wondering, what kind of boost do you run just wheelin around town? 18-19psi would eat the stock block kinda quick I would have thought.
