  1. Hey guys...well I finally replaced my turbo. It's a rebuilt unit. It seemed to work well while I was testing it but when I drove it on the freeway on my way to work she started to buck and hesitate while coasting. When I give it gas it would start to buck if I accelerate slowly...but if I boost it, she would wake back up and it would start pulling with no hesitation. The only other thing I did was clean out my intake...also, there where some cracks on the hose that goes from the U pipe to the turbo. I haven't had the chance to get a new one yet so we taped it as I needed the car to get to work today. Could this be the problem? I also noticed that she won't hold boost...it would hit 14psi and go back down to 10psi. But that's a whole nother problem and I almost positive that the bad hose is the culprit. Anyway, any suggestions on the hesitation issue? This is the first time my Z did this so something must have happened in the turbo replacement. Thanks for the help!

  2. heheh...this happened last week on our way to our first official Z club meet but I've been too busy to post. Anyway, I had the beast and two of my other buddies where with me. They both had 280zx NA's and their pretty healthy in their own right. Anyway, cruising along the streets with me in the middle of the pack...out comes a shiny Integ with dual exhaust (holds laughter) HUGE wing, huge wheels, very low to the ground with a very aggressive looking body kit. Actually, it looked ok I guess....Jerry, my friend comes up next to it and calls him out....but no response. So we ignore him and we come up to a light. No one in front of us so I swing over to the left lane to line up with Jerry's 280zx. We drag really quick and we slowed down, then this silver Integ whips around on my right and calls me out. Soooo...I took the bait and we played cat and mouse until the next light. I think it's turbocharged unless he had one of those fake turbo sound doohickies...anyway, we come up to a light and I'm behind this guy and we have a clear road once again with Jerry's Z's on his left and me and the other 280zx behind them. Light turns green and he guns it...dual exhaust screaming performance, I had to hit my breaks in first gear as I was literally on his arse....so Jerry lets me whip on the left lane and the fun begins. I ease it into third and I'm watching and listening to this guy pushing his integ to high RPM's as I passed him...I stayed on third and pulled on him at least four car lengths until I shut it down. Cool thing about it is that even though he had the gangster lean look he waved the piece sign before he made a turn. That is the FIRST time I raced an import who didn't ignore me or throw me the bird after getting served old school style. It was a lot of fun and it made it even sweeter with two other Z's attacking him from left to right. I bet that guy is scarred for life lol. Well there's my contribution for this month....you should have been there....loud growls coming from three Z’s and one weed whacker giving it all she’s got. malebitchslap.gifcheers.gif

  3. Hey guys, how's everything in the land of hybridZ's?

This weekend, I will be removing some things that I don't want on my 83zxt to hopefully remove some weight and clean up the engine bay.

    Things I will remove:

    Power steering pump ect.

    Cruise control

AC pump and everything else that's part of the system (it'll be hot as hell in Vegas next year but a small price to pay for the gains.)

Should I remove anything else? How about in the interior? I wish I had the money to replace the bumpers to fiberglass pieces, but I'm spending my money on the engine at the moment.

Also, is it hard to drive Z's with no power steering?

Thanks all and happy Z'ing! cheers.gif

  4. I'm in the process of starting my own Graphic Design business and man let me tell you, I never anticipated how much stuff I've had to learn in a course of a few weeks! Licensing, Insurance, legal stuff and yada yada yada...damn it Jim I'm an artist not a Lawyer lol. I'm excited though...just about to drop over 3g's on computer equipment and I've secured some pretty good sized accounts. I'm planning on finally quitting this 9-5 job soon as I'm very unhappy making some jack ass all this money while they toss me crumbs. Just yesterday, I made $175.00 for 1.5 hours of design work!...while I create magazines and covers all day for my puny salery...anyway, just wanted to share with the family as I've been away from the Z world trying to get my company started.

on a side note...here's a shameless plug lol

If anyone needs any graphic work ie. print design etc. let me know. I will cut you a deal .

  5. Hey guys, I've had this problem with my 83zxt for a while now and it has only gotten worse and worse. It used to only drain the battery when I parked it for longer than five days, now if I don't start it each day the battery will be dead. I have a Die Hard gold in it and I've recently had it checked and everything is great (even after countless drains and jumping). The alternator is ok as well...I think the culprit lies within the interior light (courtesy light) dimmer switch. Before the electrical stuff started acting up, my interior lights and key hole light would come on when you opened or pulled on the door handle. Then it would slowly dim off when you shut the door. It doesn't do this anymore. The only light that works is the two bottom lights that's on the door itself. This would come on when you open the door so I know it can't be the door switches. You can also turn the overhead light on when you put it on the ON position but won't turn on when you open the door. I've checked to see if there is power going to the dome light and kick panel light...they all have juice. Checked all the connections to no avail.......Soooo...my friend and I connected a light tester to the battery and went through each fuse to see which one will make the light turn off. When I got to the fuse for the interior light, the bulb light turned off...which would mean I have a short of some sort within the interior lights. My question is, does anyone know where I could find the illusive "dimmer switch" on my Z? If you're Z doens't have this, it's a switch that dimms the lights as they shut off. They have been described as a "black box" that resides in the passenger kick panel. But I still can't find it...is it next to the blower fan? Behind the wire harness?...I don't know what I'm looking for. I looked in the Haynes mannual but it has nothing on this. I have a feeling this is the cause of my lights not coming on and might also be contributing to draining my battery. Thanks for any help! hail.gif

  6. Yeah, I just put on a set of Bridgestone Potenza 245/50 on a 16"x7" racing wheels on the back of my turbo and man the handling is like night and day  . I can still burn them but the feeling of the power laying on the ground is awesome...don't even get me started on powersliding through curves lol. 17's fit nicely in a Z wheel well by the way...I'm considering putting in 18's in the back and 17's in the front to fill them in. The 16's I have right now still sit's in flush behind the wheel well (no spacer for the back). Bigger wheels or spacers will fill them in nicely.

As for the spacers...I have a buddy who has a nice set of 17" deep dish that he's been dying to put into his 280zx...the only thing is he can't find anyone to make a 4 to 5 lug spacer. Any info and help would be GREATLY appreciated.

  7. Could someone describe how this mystery sensor looks like and where it's located? I replaced my 83 electrical speedo to an analog unit from a 79 like a year ago...till this day I still can't get my cruise control to engage and the talking lady died. I looked for a speed sensor on the 79 but couldn't find it because I had no clue what I was looking for. I'm pretty sure that the 79 parts car had cruise control so the gauge unit should have had it...but again, I don't know what I'm looking for. Help! cry2.gif

  8. I've beed driving since I turned 16. I've only had one speeding ticket. If I remember correctly, I was doing about 65 on a 35 and passed a car on the emergency lane (dumb ass stopped in the middle of the intersection where there where no stop lights or signs.) I still got tagged for the speeding though. Took the class and as far as my insurance company knows I'm an angel lol. :D I drive fast all the time but my eyes are always looking in front, side and the back for popo's. When I was younger and living in SD, I knew exactly how the lights looked like at night. It's a little different here in NV. Also, pay attention to the off and onramps. Cops love to hide there and tag you while your speeding. b_hand.gif

  9. I give props where props is due...sounds like he's the rare 5 percent that has actually done more than an exhaust and intake rolleyesg.gif Wish I had that kind of money to put into my Z. I will guarantee you that the I6 turbo will give him a run for his money. Nevertheless, a true gear head will get along with me just fine.... ;)

  10. ...it's a really awkward (sp?) and sad day here at work today. We got the news that one of our friends who’s around his late fifties committed suicide. His the kind of person who would take a few minutes out of his day to talk to you. Very friendly guy but some people thought he was too friendly. I talked to him about his problems in life and knew that he was a lonely man. Some people in this office can't stand him because they considered him to be annoying, and I have to admit that when I'm busy there has been times when I had just ignored him...now, I can't help but feel how much of an impact it would have made if me (all of us) took the time to chat with him. I mean, we get so caught up in our day to day lives that you just kind of take things forgranted....granted no one expected this but maybe his over friendliness was a cry for help...will never know. Two people who where particularly mean to him balled and cried after hearing the news...I'm sure their thinking the same way...."I should have been nicer" God I hate feeling this way, it's so hopeless and there's nothing that I could do to change what happened. Just trying to comprehend what might have been going through his head is mind boggling...I mean, can you just imagine how sad and lonely he was to resort to this....just thinking about how it was at the last minutes of his life truly makes me sad...I hope he rests in piece. Bob Patterson, you will be missed.

  11. Hey guys, thanks for the reply and suggestions. As for the head gasket, I think that it's fine. I've been running the same fluids in the radiator since last summer with no hints of coolant loss. I also had the cap off with the car idling and I did not see any bubbles. I ran it this way for about ten minutes until she started to get warm again. I'm going to replace the thermostat for the 180 degree one like everyone suggested this weekened and will see how that goes...I'm thinking about pulling the radiator out as well to get it cleaned professionally.

  12. Hey guys, let me start off with a little history of the problem. I have noticed this summer that my turbo would slowly overheat when I had the AC on...it would cool back down when I turned it off. She would also pass half [3/4] and it would start to get closer to the first line before the red while driving on the freeway. Same thing if driven a little hard on the surface streets. Today was a different story though...she was a few ticks passed the half on my way home from work [like the usual]. Kept driving and had a couple of hefty take offs [nothing more than the usual] when I happen to gaze at the temp gauge...what I saw almost gave me a heart attack redface.gif ...it was on the black line before the red one. I get it home and I immediately open the hood to be greeted with boiling coolant. Would it be the thermostat? I checked the fan clutch and it seems to move back and forth with no problem. I was thinking that it could be the radiator but would that make the car overheat all of a sudden? I'm leaning towards the thermostat being bad and maybe wasn't opening. If you guys agree, I'm going to get a 160 degree thermostat. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys... cheers.gif

  13. Looks awesome Scotty! hail.gif Now she looks as fast as she runs. I'm going to re-paint my Z as well and I have a few questions. Do I need to get a compressor with a big tank? if so how big? How did you set up your garage? I have a full two car garage and I was contemplating on taking up the other half for painting the Z. Did you cover the walls and ceiling rafters with plastic? Do I need to set up a fan to blow out the chemicals? I'm a rooky with automotive painting but I have about 7 years of commercial painting experience so I think I know the basics as far as using a sprayer etc. I just don't know the technical stuff as of yet. Anyway, let me know what you did and if you have any pointers, please don't hesitate to educate me. Thanks cheers.gif
