  1. ok i just did some work on this car. the work was already started when i got the car and i was told the car ran when the engine came out of the car but that it smoked and needed new piston rings. he did the piston rings and thats were i got the engine. work i have done...put a new timeing chain on the engine put everything back together and put the engine back in the car. i tryed to starte it and it wouldnt start. i checked spark and did have spark. i checked to see if the injectors were getting signal and they were not. i nerowed it sown to the thurmotime switch and just finished replaceing that now it is getting gas and everyonce in awile it pops and exaust comes out the tail pip (the pip is old and needs to be changed but im avoiding it till it runs if i can and to give you an idea of how bad the pipe is when it first started poping the exaust was brownish from rust). dose anyone have any idea what i should check or try next. i want my car to run. the pop is very soft and there is some (not much) exaust comeing out the tail pipe normal but very soft except every so often (i think its on cylider that dose something difrent) any ideas? thanks
  2. i know of a really good one about boats that i think could be used very well for car parts if you tinkerd with the design, but i cant remeber the name of it. i will check on that, my sailing groop has a copy so i will just ask one of them this weekend. also another book i have been using for small moldes of diffrent sorts is the prop builder's molding and casting handbook by thurston james. i got my copy for $19.99 at tap plastics. i actually hadnt thought of useing it for this idea untill about 5 minutes ago. one last thing, if you have a tap plastics near you i recomend you check it out they have lots of usefull suplys for these kinds of projects. they might even have some other materials that might work well. i am probably going to head down to the one here in san jose soon and just take a look around and see if i get any ideas.
  3. i would like to know the answer to this question too. i am planing on doing a 302 swap but i have to organize it into stages (student budget) and the first stage is just going to get it useable for a cople mounths.
  4. hey kid-vid i used to be in the same spot you are in except worse. i didnt even have a car when i started posting on here. the people have been nice, helpfull, and can almost always point you in the right direction. anyways back to the topic i now have a 280zx 2+2 and will hopefully soon sell it and start working on my 240z project. if it were not for all the help i had found on this site before i had a z i would probably be driveing a fuel efficent toyota or something else with no power. i just wanted to give my two cents anyways.
  5. thanks terry, it was actually your car i was looking at when i thought of posting the question. i checked out those photos but its hard to see much about how it was done. i sent you an e-mail back asking if you could please resend that document my e-mail deleted it and when i tryed to open it it didnt know what the message was sorry about that. hey tim if you have any ideas let me know. that is one sweet ride you have terry, just looking at it i get ideas for my upcomeing project.
  6. ok i did a search on here but i didnt find quite what i was looking for so i thought i would through this question out there. i have done boat fiberglass construction before and i know a cople people here on this site have done custom fiberglass bodys for their z's i was wondering how they layed their glass, what kind of frame did they use to do it and about how much touch up sanding was needed with your way of doing this. me and a cople freinds are thinking about trying to do some small parts for some asorted cars.
  7. hey Terry what dose that hood you have do to your downforce? i would think it would put some presure on the front of the car but i am not sure.
  8. ok this might be a stupid question but i dont know about the ford mounts. if i got a newer 5.0 could i put the older style engine mounts on it and use Alsil's mount, or are the bolt paterns diffrent
  9. thanks for the info guys, this is why i love this site. i probably wont be able to aford an aluminum block anymore though. i have been putting to gether a rough budget and it dosnt look like it will fit. im still going to check it out though. god i would love to have one.
  10. let me know what you do with the headers. i still dont know what im going to do about that.
  11. all those engines are nice but i was just reading this in a post over in the chevy forum "i also have a 500CI cadillac EFI motor with 70,000 on it. Thinking bout being unique with this car seeing how it is my Toy. any response would be great." now that would be one fast ride. im still going with a 302 though.
  12. the two best engine placement swap storys i have heard are crazy. my friends relative took two VW busses and put chevy 454 big blocks in them. on one he put it dead center nice and low. this thing was the ultament sleeper. it toook turns like a sports car and it flew like a bat out of hell. the second one he did he was just haveing some fun and he put the same engine right in the back. this thing did wheelys like crazy. anyways the reason i started this post is because one of my friends is a ford focus guy and he just found someone who put the engine the rear of one of those. i understand it works well with those. anyways he was talking to me about it and then we started talking about what would be a crazy swap. if you want to check out that focus with the rear engine its on focaljet.com i think thats the site anyways he showed to me and im not a focus guy and normaly i would laugh at something like that but the did a nice job with it. anyone else have some funny storys like these?
  13. ok im not planing on doing this but i just thought it would be something for thought. if you were to think compleatly out of the box on how to do a swap there are a cople ideas that come to mind. how about takeing a 2+2 remove the back seats and put the engine right behind the seats. build a fire wall around it. i would guess that the engine would be fairly close to centerd in the car. if you moved a cople of other things around you would have the perfect handeling setup. and the thing with this design idea is that it shouldnt really mater how big the engine is you put in it as long as you put it in the right spot. i could be way off my mark here though and it might be to far rear on the car. let me know what you guys think. another thought would the gas tank be in the way? just another crazy thought for us to ponder. who knows mabie something good will come of this talk.
  14. o i did have one more question about that engine mount. how are you planing on reduceing vibrations through the frame. i really want to make this a nice smooth powerfull ride and want to avoid vidrateing the frame and myself to much
  15. that looks like a nice set up. i have seen that cross member on here before and its one of my first choices. i am also looking at Terry Oxandale's 240z also although i think i like the one you showed a little better than his way. but after everything is considerd they are very close in the fact that both run into the same problems. but i think with a remote oil filter you gain enough space to get rid of most of the problems. anyways keep me posted on your swap. i think at earlyest i would be starting late december on mine but because of school i think that will mainly be buying and designing. the real work will probably begin the first day of summer for me. also i was wondering if there is anyone close to napa or san jose who has done a ford swap that might be willing to help or at least let me look up close at theirs? thanks again and about the iron heads on the other poast i have heard it said both ways before so i am undecided about whats better with a turbo but i do think theres a good argument for both sides and its going to be personal opinion in the end kind of like weather to go with a ford or chevy swap. their are good things about both.
  16. i think i have made up my mind about what and how im going to do this. i have desided to go with a 302 and just try and stick it about an inch away from the fire wall and nice and low too. i think i will probably go with a t5 for my trany and im probably going to put a four barel carb on it. i still dont know exactly how im going to mount this but i have seen about 5 diffrent ways on this site. who here has done this type of a swap? i want to pick their brains a bit and come up with my plan based on all the input. the main things that i need to work out and i hear are hard to fit in are the headers, and the oil filter. i have seen a cople diffrent brake upgrades for the v-8 conversion like the 300zx one what do people on here consider the best one for your money?
  17. thanks for the info. i do actually have some idea how a turbo works though. and well it might not always seam like it i do a little bit of home work before i talk about some things on here. i think i said that i was thinking about going with a 302 with aluminum heads and then eventually adding twin turbos. what i ment by that is that i will probably keep it just a plain 302 for some time and then spend some time makeing changes to the entire set up. anyways i didnt think about the volume issue on the heads though so thanks for pointing it out. thanks again.
  18. thats good to know that about the 400. i dont know much about it and every thing i know about it comes from my friends 1972 caprice, and some one had explained it to me as a 350 bored out (actually that was the one of two years that chevy made a 400 that started as a 400 small block) anyways the reason i didnt talk about the 351 is because if i go with the 302 its because im going to be trying for a good weight and have all the good aluminum heads on it. if i go for a chevy 350 its because i decide to go for power and the easyness of doing it. right now i think i am leaning tords the 302 though. thanks for the opinions though, keep them coming.
  19. i am trying to decide on what i want to use in my v-8 z. i am going to list some chevy options that i am keeping open along with my main ford ones. ok here they are a ford 289 or a 302, chevy 350 or 400 (like the ones in the old caprices basicly 350s bored outto 400) anyways im not sure what way im going to go but my main idea right now is to start with a 302 and eventually add twin turbos to it let me know what you think about these ideas.
  20. ok i have been putting my ideas together for my project car i will hopefully soon start and i want to try and decide some stuff. one of the ideas i am looking at is a ls1 or something like it but i cant find to much info on the engine. what are the diffrences from the bare block compared to a normal chevy 350 block? to give me a little idea of how diffrent it is would parts for a diffrent 350 work on the block? for arguments sake if i wanted to buy just the plain block and set it up as a carburated system would it work? thanks for the info guys. and yes i admit that i dont know much about this engine it might be really stupid to do that set up on it.
  21. anyone here ever done a rotary engine in a zcar? i was thinking that would really blow the doors off a lot of almost anything on the road. just a thought. Julius
  22. i have been toying with some ideas latly and i was wondring if anyone makes a aluminum 302 block. it seams like it would be something people would want so someone should be makeing one but i cant seam to find one. in fact i cant seam to find any v-8 thats aluminum except chevys new 4.6l is there anyone out there?
  23. dose anyone know of a 6 speed that will fit up to a 302 short block thanks.
  24. anyone know were i could find some body kits of a 280zx 2+2? not really sure what im looking for but want to see whats out there. thanks
  25. hey guys im normaly a chevy guy but i also love the 240z and know its better to use a ford in a v-8 conversion i was wondering as far as handleing is concerned is the 302 better or is the 351 better. thanks for the help.
