  1. Unfortunatley I'm going to have to sell the 280zx. If anyone is interested please let me know!
  2. Yeah I agree. We may end up just going more basic this year anyway just because of time.
  3. I'm am still studying the "why" it is a good idea. From what I know now it acts like a diffuser for the front of the car helping to add downforce for the front of the car. I'm still learning, but while I was working on the plans I figured I'd copy a few le mans prototypes.
  4. Next we got approval from our "official" Mishimoto mascot. Then replaced the front suspension support with a piece alot stronger and slightly less bent then the original. Added our moch up L28 and started fitting the radiator and our new mishimoto intercooler. Our oil cooler isn't going to fit where we had planned so our oil cooler location and splitter/under tray design are going to be changed quite a bit. Details on that coming soon
  5. Got the bottom finished and painted. Onto the engine bay
  6. I'm planning on taking it out the side skirt since that will be the easiest. It'll be interesting to see how everything fits once its all in place.
  7. Nice! That aluminum wing looks pretty awesome. One of my friends from the Pikes Peak Hill Climb built his own carbon wing following the above procedure - but he actually spent quite a bit of time researching the best shape. On the last page of his build it shows the current wing. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=271303&page=9
  8. Oh yeah, and here are the designs for the front end. We are making molds of all the new body work if people are interested down the road. from
  9. Here are some pictures from this years Hill Climb... good inspiration! I'm just glad these cars won't be in my class!
  10. In order to do things right we have stripped everything out again and are taking off all the undercoating, cleaning up any rust and stitch welding the whole chassis. So far things are going really well. We picked up alot of supplies this week to change some of the body work and improve the aerodynamics. Here is some of the CAD work for our front splitter design.
  11. Here are some awesome instructions on making your own rear wing. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1306900-Foam-Carbon-Fiber-Wing-DIY Fairly easy for a pretty awesome result.
  12. When I got to bama I did almost nothing on the zx besides get it painted, add a splitter, and rev it up to impress people. It does look good though. So after several years I moved back to Colorado - with my southern belle. Since coming back I've realized that SCCA Club Racing, while fun, it is ridiculously expensive with no exposure and incentive for sponsors. The Pikes Peak Hill Climb however is right in my backyard, relatively cheap, with HUGE exposure. Its a one week commitment verses a 9+ race season. So with those thoughts in mind my long time friends and team members and I started turning the car into a Hill Climb car. I would like to run the car at autocross and track days again to be able to enjoy it! The 280zx was originally going to get a vq40 that my friend had laying around - but the 4.0 is actually a really really tall motor that won't fit in the space we had. In order to make the power we want on the budget we have with are taking the L28 back to turbo again. We already have awesome engine internals with a highly developed head, so we should make some good HP numbers. More to come tomorrow...
  13. After one full season in the Rocky Mountain Region I decided I wanted to change to SCCA Club Racing and really step the cars capabilities. So began alot of work with Jeff Winters at Rallye-Sport in Denver. We switched back to NA because of rules and made as much power as possible. Jeff redid my suspension to make everything wider and fully adjustable. I also switched to a complete fiberglass body. I ran it for one test day at Pueblo Motorsports Park w/o the bodywork before moving to Alabama (and running out of money).
  14. Time to start up a build thread I guess. My 83 280zx was the first car I bought with my own money and was my daily driver for quite a few months. It was great, but since I was commuting 50+ miles one way to work I decided to get a subaru for the winter months. Which allowed me to start turning the 280zx into my autocross car. I did wheels, suspension, switched to turbo, and changed the front end.
  15. How many of you guys are running stock drivetrains? Can the tranny and diff hold 300 + HP and 400 + Tq?
  16. I need 280zx headlight covers for my race car. Doen't have to be anything special. Please PM me if you have a set for sale!
  17. Thanks for the info. I knew I'd have to change the upper oil pan along with the bottom pan if I were to swap them, but I didn't know if they would interchange. Im guessing if any pan would fit it would have to be from the 37hr. But I'll have to talk with Turbo-Toys if we keep going forward.
  18. I have a VQ40de that I am trying to swap into my 280zx race car. Does anyone know if the oil pan from a vq35de or 35hr or 37hr will fit the 40de? I know the 35hr and 37hr are pretty similar to the 40de but didn't know about the pan. The 40de has a rediculous pan that hangs down very very low and has the oil filter in the front which causes clearance issues. From all I've researched there should not be any clearance issues with the crank but I am changing the oil pickup point. Anyone with experience or knowledge please chime in!
  19. What do you guys think of these SportMax wheels? http://www.bigwheels.net/index.php?location=wheels&action=view_model&model=503%20Black http://www.bigwheels.net/index.php?location=wheels&action=view_model&model=940%20Black Anyone used sportmax wheels before?
  20. I would agree with naviathan - new springs and struts do stiffen up the suspension. I wouldn't say that it made the ride uncomfortable, but it did change the feel of the car. With the Tokico Illumina struts you can set them to a softer ride level, which helps. Personally if I'm going to replace the springs or the struts I'll do both just to save the time and energy. (insert another sales pitch here) If you are interested in springs or struts let me know.
  21. I understand how you might be nervous buying used parts, I can't say I blame you at all - I'm the same way. just thought I would give you another option. BTW, very nice looking 280zx! Is the engine in as good of condition as the exterior?
  22. nbesheer, I'm selling very slightly used struts and springs for the 280zx. I drove an 83 also. I have the Tokico Illumina (adjustable) struts for the front, the Tokico HP struts for the rear, and Eibach Springs all for sale. go to this hybridz page for more info http://classifieds.hybridz.org/showproduct.php?product=3844&cat=15 I'll work with you on the price if you are interested. David
  23. or even just ZG flairs that are made to fit the s130.... that would be awesome. edit: and i would undoubtedly buy a set. I'm glad to see someone else is interested. I've been talking with two fabricators recently, both said they would be willing to take on the project if we had 10-30 people willing to make a deposit. Do you think there is enough interest for a 280zx wide body kit?
