  1. What would be a good tire for this setup? I really like my 225/50/15 but that might be too big for the 9 inch width. So 215/45 with a stretch? I would prefer not.

If anything I would try to go bigger than a 225, you are going to get major stretching, the smaller the width you go. Some like that look, I personally hate it, I think it looks bad and it can be dangerous. The 225 would be minimum I would go, I know Toyo makes a 235/50/15 but it is a fairly expensive tire.

  2. I just use the 17 inch 9.5 rotas offset as the benchmark for backspacing as it was supposed to be the max amount for stock suspension. I'd rather play it safe when giving people information, but if you got 4.8 backspace thats good news for him.

I actually ran the same wheel and tires with a +10 offset and it still did not hit my stock suspension, that is 7mm closer than the +3 offset wheel. The tires I used are also very wide BF Goodrich TA's about 250mm. He may get different results with his car but I am just passing along observations and 'real world' results I have noticed with my 280z.

Note to the original poster, the above only worked on the rear of my Z, for the front you may want to wait for the 15x8 Shakotan which I have been reading should be released soon. It would be interesting to see these wheels staggered on an S30.

  3. they should fit if you have coilovers. I run 15x8 -32 with 225s and only had rubbing on one corner that was taken care of with a fender roller. A 15x9 0 is .7 inches more in and 5 inches of backspace and the maximum backspace with stock springs is 4.5 so I think you'll be dandy.

Use this tool t0 play with stuff helps answer a lot of Qs pretty easy

Are you sure that a 4.5 inch backspace is maximum on a stock suspension? I ran 245/60/14's on 14x7 +3 wheels with a stock suspension, according to the wheel calculator you mention, I can run a 235/50/15 on a 15x9 inch zero offset wheel and still not hit my stock suspension.

  4. It all depends on the wheel. 5mm should be OK but you'll have to test fit and make sure the stub gets to the end of the nut or engage at least 5 full thread turns.

Thanks John, only 5 full turns, wow I thought you needed at least 9 turns. I should be okay then, if I remember right I am getting close to 7 turns. Need to check again. My whole issue stems from inheriting a Z whose wheels came with +3 offset on 3 wheels and +10 on the fourth wheel. My thinking in using a 5mm spacer is to turn the +10 offset wheel into a +5 so it is more even with the others.

  5. In an attempt to lower the rear of my 280 I changed the rear upper strut rubber mounts to front 240z mounts which did lower the car close to an inch. However, I still need it lowered in the rear by another inch or so. I currently have stock springs in the back and was wondering if changing the coil springs to lowering springs such as the ones sold by Motor Sports (Eibach) would still lower my car another inch even though I am using the 240z upper mounts?

By the way if anyone has rear lowering springs they do not need I am buying, thanks.

  6. Hi everyone, I was thinking about getting another set of wheels for my 280 (red in color, no ZG flares I prefer the car without them) and was looking at the Rota RB-R. I am hoping to get some good advice on choosing a proper color and fitment for my car. Keep in mind it has some flaring at the back.

Which color wheel would best suit a red zed: Royal Silver, Royal Hyper Black and/or Royal Gun Metal? (personally I am leaning more towards the Royal Hyper Black).

In terms of fitment, I would like a wider rim in the back. I was thinking of the following combination: Rota Rb-r 17x8.5 +4 (for the front) and Rota Rb-r 17x9 -13 (for the rear).

Tire combination 'could' be 235/45/17 up front and 245/45/17 in the back.

My biggest concern is that the 8.5 and 9 inch combination would not look correct? However, if they are both Rb-r's wouldn't they in fact look correct?

Finally, would anyone know if Kim Bong (kimcosmic@juno.com) is able to get me this set-up or would I be wasting my time asking him?

Many thanks to all those who reply!

  7. Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has had any success working on their rear suspension on a 280z without having to remove the spindle pins (we all know what a pain this to do). In other words is it possible to remove the three strut bolts ,emergency brake cable and compress the springs while they are still on the car and lower the strut assembly enough to work on it.

What I am trying to do is lower my rear which is currently sitting higher than the front. I may just change the upper insulator mount to a set from a 240z and hope I get about a one inch drop for my efforts.

Any help, suggestions and/or direction would be much appreciated. :)

  8. I havnt tried switching the wheels around. However, I don't think it will help you much if I do because I've cut very high up (and rolled out) on my stock fender so it pretty much doesnt exist anymore.

Thank you everyone for all the help with this, from this angle it seems like the front 17x9's -13 would clear the rear stock fenders, put it could be deceiving.

  9. Although it looks "bulgy" I have a 245 on a 7 inch rim! Will change in the future, so yes 225 will fit easily on a 7 inch rim.

A friend just called to inform me he found me FORTRAN (apparently big in Japan) rims. 2 pcs 15X8 and 2 pcs 15X7 for $950. I know i can fit 245 on the 15x8 (although best fit would be on 8.5 rims)

The question is can I safely fit 225's on the 15x7 rims?

    Thanks.

  10. How wide have any of you guys gone? And how was and would you go that wide again? Im tire shopping and I havent decided how wide Im wanting to go yet, any sugestions?

    Thanks, Richard

I have seen 205/60/14 and 215/60/14, both looked good the latter looked more beefy, 225/60/14 is most likely to wide for a 6 inch.
