  1. What are you planning on doing with the car? I mean...what are your ultimate HP goals? Or...are there any HP goals? It almost sounds like (and this is in no way meant to be an offense) you just like having the bells and whistles more than the actual power.

Just watching a few videos of a V8Z will show that it doesn't take much to overpower the car.

As far as your questions go:

The LS1 is a great motor!! I *believe* Darius has an 383ci LS1 (supercharged) in his Z and judging from the videos of his car doubt it could handle any more power...it can't even handle the power he has in it now.

Maybe I'm naive..but...$14k sounds like alot of money to me to put into an engine unless you put the same amount into tubbing your rear end and redoing your suspension/brakes/frame.

  2. I plan on installing a fuel pressure guage anyway. They're cheap and might tell me if I am running too much fuel.

I finally got the exhaust on and drove it. I havent' really mashed it, but, it didn't give me the "oh my Gawd!!" type of accelleration I was hoping for...but, I've only been driving around on the primaries and haven't really opened it up.

Something is definitely up with the carb, though. Even though it was just rebuilt it doesn't idle quite right...seems to have kind of a rough idle. Hell...maybe it has a hot cam in it and I just don't know it. (I doubt it).

I used my old muffler...but, I'm thinking it's not quite loud enough...so I'll replace it in the future.

  3. ...ok, it's at the exhaust shop now.

I drove it there (only about 1/3 mile), but, didn't get on it still...I actually passed a cop on the way there, though!! Scary as all get out!

For some reason my turn signals aren't working now, though. I think I might have left a ground undone when I did my harness....will need to check that out when I get it back.

  4. Hmm...now that you mention it there is a little bit of fuel seeping from the accelerator pump.

Now, it's while cranking basically...it just shoots a jet of fuel right out the top...maybe I'll try the fuel pressure regulator...I'm not sure of the fuel pressure, but the pump was rated for 5-7psi @ 35gph, doesn't necessarily mean it's not putting more than that out, though...especially since I rewired my fuel pump with something like 8 guage wire and a relay setup.

  5. Just so I don't have to start a new thread...I'll post in this one...

Sometimes (most of the time) when I go to start my Z (350 with a Quadrajet) fuel actually spits out of the top the carb...then I gotta pump it a couple of times to get it to start.

Once it start it *seems* to run ok...maybe slightly rough, but, I don't know if that's because I'm still running through open block hugger headers.

Never owned a carbureted car before, but, I wouldn't *think* this is normal...is it? Or is it because of the electric fuel pump forcing fuel into the carb during startup?

    Confused in Arizona.

(note, while running it DOES NOT spit out fuel from the top of the carb)

  6. Well, it would be one thing if I was actually driving the thing, but, it only idled for about 5 minutes or so and it was hanging very steadily in the same spot. So...I dunno if the guage isnt' exactly correct or what.

I have a 3300CFM fan sitting on a Camaro radiator set at about 180 (can't go any lower than that)

I never have really trusted this guage anyway.

I'll start saving up for a full set of Autometer guages for the dash.

  7. When using the stock Datsun guage with the JTR bushing for the temp sensor...where is the needle suppose to sit? I mean...is it supposed to sit right in the middle? (mine doesn't...it sits about 3/4 over and I haven't even taken it on the street...just idling)

Searched, but, couldn't quite find the answer...

  8. Alright....well...

I decided to just cut up the plates, screwed them to the tranny tunnel, and then screwed the shifter to the plates. It'll do for now.

Car moves under it's own power now :)

All that's left is to wire the fan, tidy up the tranny cooler lines, and then drive it down to the exhaust shop tomorrow for the exhaust (it's only 1/3 mile from me...if that)

Getting excited, but, pretty nervous all at the same time.

  9. Sorry for what may seem like an uber-n00b question...but...

Even after searching through the forums I haven't really been able to find an answer...

The stock shifter hole obviously needs to be covered up and some kind of plate made for mounting an an auto shifter...I have a B&M Z-Gate (I don't really like that it sits so tall, but, I'm stuck with it for now) and am not sure as the best way to mount it.

I purchased a 6" x 22" plate (22 guage). I think I can cut it into a couple of pieces and rivet it over the stock shifter hole and then mount the shifter to it. Does this sound like the best way to do it?

Other than a few odds/ends the car is almost done. I let it run for a few minutes (still through open headers until the car can move under it's own power) and whoever told me the paint would bubble off the headers was absolutely correct!!!

The engine sounds incredibly mean and I can't wait to drive this sucker!!

  10. OK...I know I said I wouldn't work on it any more tonight, but, I had to try.

I kept messing with the timing and it would run a little better each time until finally I can't adjust the timing any more due to clearance issues...however, it at least tries to fire on all 8 cylinders.

So...I'm thinking I probably just have either the distributor stabbed wrong (I had it 180 out the first try...!!!) or the plug wires off by 1.

Wow! That's all I can say. It sounds like a friggen top fueler!! :D

I'm really excited to at least have gotten this far. I still have some work left to do, but...excited beyond all belief that it's FINALLY coming together and semi-runs.

  11. Hehe...well, if it ran I wouldn't mind :) It sounds like a gigantic Harley Davidson...but, I don't have all of the vacuum lines and everything hooked up yet. I just wanted to check the fuel pump/ignition/starter wiring.

At least I know it's getting fuel, spark, and turns over.
