  1. Looks like I need to call the guys in Calgary and find out about that. Regarding the AFM, there seems to be some controversy about the AFM controlling the fuel pump on a 78. I believe your statement is correct regarding 75-77's but not a 78. I'm reading that the 78 is controlled via oil pressure switch and alternator. Of course, I could be wrong. I am waiting on a new FPR to arrive. My stock FPR was spewing fuel after reinstall so time to get a new one. I will then hook up a 12v batt directly to the fuel pump and try to prime/start the vehicle. With all the new upgrades it hasn't been running in over 5 mos.
  2. I agree that the pump should only run while the engine is running. I am working on that and if I can some how integrate that with SDS I will do it. Would have gone Megasquirt fuel and spark if there would have been some support within a 200 mile radius of me but no one really has any experience or any hybrid Z's for that matter in this area. SDS fuel is pretty much plug and play and I can upgrade to the spark after I get a stronghold on the fuel end. I am learning as I go.
  3. No I am not using the sds to activate the pump. I am trying to figure out if disconnecting the AFM had anything to do with fuel pump operation on my car.
  4. Hey guys, I have been in the process of upgrading the z this past winter and can see light at the end of the tunnel. Here is what I did. t4 turbo upgrade 450cc injectors SDS fuel only management Palnet fuel rail Here is the problem. I have no power to the fuel pump now. I remember someone saying that disconecting the AFM could cause the pump power to die or related some how. Anyway, does anyone know how to remedy this. The car is 78Z. I am so close I can taste it. ANy help is appreciated.
  5. I am in the process of doing a few upgrades (sds, 450cc injectors, bigger turbo). I bought an el cheapo T3/T4 57trim turbo off of ebay about a month ago and will be installing soon (Downpipe issues). I will keep you posted on the performance of such unit assuming I ever get the car started again. This 2 week project has turned into 2 months. BTW, I have not left feedback yet
  6. Wow. There are truly all walks of life that are Hybrid Z owners not to mention the generation gaps. I'm amazed at some of the wiz bang kids that know their stuff on here as well as some of the seasoned guys as well. My funding for what is a real money pit comes from being a pilot for a freight/cargo company. In my younger days I have always had a sports car and have owned every generation Z car except the 350z. Couple of kids later and I'm lucky to have this one on the sly. I tell the wife once I get it fixed up right, it's for sale. Guess what....it will never be fixed up .
  7. Kash, I know what you mean about MS. I would love to have megasquirt but just don't feel comfortable installing that system. That is why I am going with the SDS guys. They pretty much have a plug and play system and customer service is right on. As soon as I get the 450cc injectors and a fuel rail from palnet, the sds will be next.
  8. Excellent.....let the bidding begin.
  9. Just want to make sure these will work on my 82 zxt engine and yes, I will have a fuel rail made by palnet. DSM Fuel injectors, 450cc, out of Eclipse Talon, 4G63 Thanks for the help.
  10. Very nice Wigen. I wish I could run bigger injectors with current setup but it just will not work. I have 1978 ECU/AFM so the SDS will be perfect. I'm not looking to go 400+hp, just 300 or so with 15lbs. of boost.
  11. Thanks Pete. I kinda thought so. I am checking ebay every so often to see if the brown tips are available. Oh yes, the ECU and AFM. I am running pig rich with NA injectors soooo I will be purchasing the SDS system shortly(winter here so I am just getting my ducks in a row so to speak). Due to my limited mech abilities, I am probably just going to get the SDS fuel only deal. My goals are to get this car running with the proper Air/fuel mixture, 300-350hp, that's really about it. I have the 60mm tb upgrade on the way. Do you think that will be sufficient in order to get to where I'm trying to go? Thanks, Scott
  12. I am looking to upgrade to the 35#, 370cc injector. Do you guys know if this injector would work on the 1982 turbo z engine as long as I add a new fuel rail? They are some sort of pico style injector. Here is a link to the injector in question: Edelbrock/ Magneti Marelli 35 lb/hr fuel injectors http://www.edelbrock.com/sportcompact_new/mc/fuel/fs_injectors.shtml
  13. Hello all. New Z guy here with a few questions. I have a 1978 280z w/ 82 turbo engine. Ignition, ECU, AFM, injectors are all 1978 z NA. I am intercooled and just running stock boost currently. I have read through the archives and there are many things to check. I have checked nearly all and the car still runs pig rich. I tried to use the turbo injectors but the car would not run at all with them in. I have a plan that may solve the issue and also give me the increase in power at the same time. I am going to swap out the AFM one more time (have one sitting around) and see where that goes. I have purchased the 60mm tb upgrade and will install for more airflow. I doubt seriously that these will be that much of a remedy. My plan, since I want to be able to get to 300hp with bigger injectors, is to go ahead and get the SDS fuel management. I'm thinking that I might be able to lean it out or richen it up through tuning and just forget the old ECU and AFM. I know it's a bit pricey but I need a simple install system since I seem to be the only turbo swap in the Cincinnati, OH area. BTW, I tried talking to some local dyno/performance guys and they have never dealt with Megasquirt at all. Does this seem like a logical approach to get where I'm trying to go? Is there something I may have missed or not tried other than previously mentioned? Thanks very much.
  14. Man, I really like the black, of course.
