  1. apparently I can't pass the inspection with out a fully functioning parking brake. I emailed the zbarn folks hoping they might have what I need but I'm one of those instant gratification types... so I was hoping some one could email me a picture of the part so that I might be able to fab one out so that I can drive legally untill the barn gets one in stock. the part I'm missing is the locking mechanism that fits between the button rod thingy and the lower sprocket piece. I'll try to put a picture of what I do have so that maybe you can see what I don't. a picture of it over some grid paper should be all that I need. thanks, chris
  2. I did that, just forgot to add it, no boost pump though. thanks man, chris
  3. I found the problem and it really wasn't what I had expected. the fuel wasn't getting to the carbs. after I had tried just about everything I decided to check the fuel once more. I pulled the line off of one of the carbs and cranked it...nothing. I was worried about the state of the tank when I bought it but I didn't expect it to be in bad enough condition that it would block up the screen. I'm taking it to a radiator shop in the morning to have it boiled and recoated they quoted me about $45 for the job. certainly cheaper than replacing the dizzy. I'll do it eventually. on that point, anyone know of one that looks close to stock; black cap, vac advance, uses a standard coil. I guess I could upgrade without feeling guilty if I keep the old parts in boxes and it still "looks" stock. thanks guys, chris
  4. I just posted yesterday that I WANTED TO KEEP THE POINTS... your right. I spent 7 hours yesterday trying to get that car to start. points are adjusted, plugs are new and fire some of the time. but I can not for the life of me keep it running. it runs while the starter is running and if I bridge a wire over the resistor it runs for about 3 seconds longer, I don't know if its points, coil, plugs, I have no frickin idea. I'm about to the point where I want to replace the whole damn ignition system for new... this sucks bad. and I wouldn't be quite so frustrated except that the car ran last weekend. sorry. chris
  5. I've tried the folks there, they're cool, but I like you guys better. and even though I have an appreciation for stock engine components I do like what you all are doing with suspension and breaks. I wouldn't say I'm a purest because at some point I want to build the top end. lets just say I want to build it 70s style hybrid, keeping it with technology that was used when the car was first shipped to us here in the US. chris
  6. nah, it would be nice but the car is bone stock and an early vin. I'm going to keep it that way. appreciate the offer though. chris
  7. where did you find the stripes?
  8. should it just be replaced or is it one of those "stick some gum on it type repairs" ?
  9. I thought it was the alternator when I bought the car because it wouldn't start up then, but it wound up being the condencer, once it started the alternator charged the batery fine, so I don't think that its that. but once we got it running I replaced the points, still ran fine. did the filters and plugs and the idle was better. got it running prety sweet, a little rich, but it was running. took it for a drive and it died. I checked the plugs and they proved that the mix was too rich and when I looked at the points they were touching. I don't think that they are suposed to touch. my best guess is that I fouled my plugs and my points moved on me, I may not have had them snuged down all the way. on another note, when I tightened the points the vaccume advance slipped off the point where it's suposed to connect, should this be tightened or is it ok if it's a little loose on that point or is that something I need to fix asap? chris
  10. ok, new issue, now it won't start at all, I think the new points I installed may have slipped (I'm crossing my fingers that thats the problem anyway) it seems like it would make sense, install em, don't tighten em enough, they slip after 5 min of hard driving. that would explain why it died so hard when it did die and it would explain, one of the reasons anyway, why the plugs fouled the way that they did... I think... anything guys, I'm making excuses now. thanks, chris
  11. I had thet problem with my 240, I replaced the condencer and it started right up. you don't have the dash off or guages out do you? found out the hard way that the tac has to be hooked up to get power to the ignition system. I was cussing over that schematic for two days trying to sind why I wasn't getting power to the coil... chris
  12. I got my 240z running really well yesterday. decided to take it for a quick spin, it was amazing. I was out for about 5 min, pulled it into the garage...and it died, would't start again. I pulled the plugs to try to diagnose the problem and they were coarted in a fine black soot. I figure the carbs are running rich but I'm not certain. any thughts? I ordered the ztherapy vidio on su tuning, hopefully a good tune up will fix the problem. don't know though. it was great while it lasted. chris
  13. I'd rather not pay the 50 bucks for bumper mounts for a 1970 240. does anyone have the dimentions for it so that I can make a set. if not dimentions could someone send a picture of it by a ruler from a couple of different angles. I'd appreciate it, chris
  14. well, bought my z. 450 miles down to NC and 450 miles back. its straight and pretty clean.

    monza exhaust

any thoughts? has anyone tried thier header or exhaust system? I'll need to replace the origional exhaust on my z and this looked like a good possibility. its relatively inexpencive and from what they say about them selves they sound good. I'm not looking for sereous proformance (yet) I just want something to get me there for the time being, something I could maybe build on later. let me know what you think. found it on blackdragonauto thanks, chris
  16. if I was going to trade it you'd be the first on my list. keep in touch chris...I'll need your help before too long I'm sure. chris
  17. well, I made the decision. I made some calls and found a garage I can use long enough to get it weather proofed and it runs now. I got the 240, its all origional and is vin # is 1222. I was stressing because it could be a huge investment if I restore it properly. I talked the guy out of a new dash, bumper, and tool kit, and I got him to trailer it back for me. I'll post some pics soon. I appreciate the imput, I wigout right before a major purchase, regardless of what I'm buying. anyway, thanks again, chris
  18. he said the only rust is on the floor pan, passenger side, and its about the size of a bb. I know there is probably more but I won't know for sure till I see it.
  19. I'm going to visit a guy in NC to buy a car. I had my sights set on an 02/70 probuction date 240z with some rust in the floor pans. I just found out from him that it has been sitting for 10 years and doesn't have a lagitimate title... and it doesn't run. also found out that he parted out the origional interior and replaced it with later model crap. Now he does have a 280z that belonged to his son and is in good condition, minor rust, and has been slightly upgraded. he's selling it for the same price. the 240 does not run, the 280 does. the 240 needs work, the 280 would be fine as is. I know someone will say "well, what do you plan on doing with it?" and its a good question. I want a daily driver that I can fix up as I go and have a "fun to drive" vehicle. I would also like to sell it at some point to get a "garage queen" Z car. I have no garage at the moment though so getting something to familurize me with the workings of the car and something to feed this hereditary addiction, to which I can blame my father, is my current goal. to end this. would I be happy with the 280, or would it only end in dissappointment. I love the earlier Zs and I love classic 70s racing... damnit, what do you think????
  20. I think I found my Z. its an early vin 1970 240z. I'll be driving 450 miles to NC to pick it up, that is if it is everything this guy sais it is. looks clean, only minor rust, guy bought it from the origional owners in california about two years ago. lets hope for the best. chris
  21. crap...I should have done a better search. I think I found what I was after.
  22. Has anyone on here upgraded an early Z from a basic lap belt to a more modern restraint device with out going full racing harness? If so I was hoping to get some insight into mounting up the new hardware. thanks in advance, chris
