  1. Did some sound-deadening removal a few weeks ago.....what a pain in the ***. Found that it was a little easier when I heated it up with a torch! Couple of hours worth of work and its done. Spare tire well is pretty clean, floors and frame rail work in the near future for me. Ordering tube steel for my rotisserie tomorrow, doing what many others have done on here with the 3 engine stand method. Sectioned that stuff today. Can't wait to see the look on my neighbors faces when the car is upside down in the driveway next week!
  2. WOW! Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks Paul! Makes things so much cleaner and easier to deal with.....A+!
  3. November 2007--June 20011....Short story behind this car.....My dad and I were looking for a car to "tool around with" as he had just retired in 2007. We wanted something lightweight, rear-wheel drive, classic looks and easy on our wallets. He suggested a Datsun as I owned many different z's growing up years ago and he liked the body styling. I had been looking through and reading on Hybridz for a couple years just dreaming as my screenname suggests.....Shortly after we agreed on a z-car, I came across this car on Hybridz in the classifieds and he went down to Bloomington, IL. to check it out. Price was right at $1500 so he told me I could pay my $750 with sweat equity the first time we actually would be able to work on the car together. The car came with a 355 SBC, 700R4 transmission, and a R200 rearend. The V8 swap was close to 50% finished when he picked the car up--with a flatbed trailer... Before I even made it back to Illinois to see the car in the shop, my dad was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and we never actually "worked" on it together other than dismantling a few things--pulled the motor and transmission, removed the dash and wiring harness. The car basically sat in a dry carport with a tarp over it for 3 years. Dad passed away in April 2011, I brought the car out to Omaha in May and basically looked at it every day for a month wondering if I would ever touch it....or if it would just sit in the garage to cause issues with my wife. In late June, I discussed selling the car with my wife and she said "absolutely not!", I should at least make it roadworthy. So I figured I would start with photo documentation early as I always seem to get too far along to properly do this part of any project. The car is missing lots of interior parts including seats, carpet, door panels, window cranks, spare tire tilt cover, dash is cracked terribly, etc. The shell is in primer and is somewhat rust free, floor pans have been replaced (amateur job-probalby redo these this winter), and an amateur attempt at a roll cage was made. Roll cage with be redone or modified or both this winter as well. Shell is getting media blasted later this fall now as my friend that owes me a favor has delayed me yet again. Reason for the media blasting is that there is some surface rust beneath the primer in a couple places--prep work was probably done hastily before selling. I have the JTR V8 swap "bible" and the TBI book as well. Lots of important info in those as I've been reading them and digesting the main points for a while. Reading here for around 4 years has helped me a tremendous amount! I know it is going to cost me a bit to replace the interior parts and some fabrication will need to be done by me or someone else. I plan on a budget of $5k and hope to be on the road in a year or so.
  4. I can understand that....Now I know why the feature is not turned on, thanks John!
  5. Personally I think that if classifieds/sales/purchases are allowed then this should be turned on. I've seen members with positives (or something similar) below their screenames when posting. Has this feature been turned on in the past? I'm not requesting a forum to argue about "deals gone bad" either, I hate seeing that on forums as it takes away from the whole purpose of what we're here for. Maybe a simple "fair trade" added below screename and location.....just my 2c.
  6. well I guess questions dont get answered here very quickly.....
  7. Just wondering where we post to verify someone buys or sells according to the rules. I see this on some members profile but don't see where I can give feedback on a purchase.....
  8. I will definitely be pursuing the 350 swap! My dad and I used to talk about how well the z's would perform if there was someone doing a well thought out V-8 swap....Little did we know that Scarab had already jumped in and out of this endeavor.
  9. Finally had a day to go through some of the boxes that were in the car my dad and I purchased 4 years ago...I'm not sure about these mounts but looking at the measurements I believe that they are JTR motor mounts/spacers for 350 sbc and the other mount is a crossmember from JTR I believe....Can anyone that has done the 350 swap confirm these assumptions? Thanks much, Dale.
  10. This thread gives me all the hope in the world that some day I can finish my project and not have to start over with a new shell!! Best of luck to you and keep up the good work. Amazing dedication you are showing here!
  11. Very good info for those running turbocharged cars/trucks. I found the intercooler theory section especially helpful with one of my projects although it was not on my z......should have known to look on here for a link before searching other not so technical boards:)
  12. Thanks for the advice, I offered $1,500 and he said I was insulting him!! Moderators you can lock this thread, back to the searching......
  13. Anyone ever had the bracket/timing chain guard (drivers side next to timing chain just aft of the distributor/2 bolts I believe) shear off to where the bracket/guard is pivoting on lower bolt into timing chain as the motor runs/bouncing off timing chain/very loud and noisy?? Timing chain has at least 3/4 inch play when squeezing ascending and descending sides together. Went to pick my new 77 280Z up and this is what I ran into after driving 7 hours for the $$ transfer. Some cam lobes are worn badly and I believe the metal has been going through the oil pump. Very little power beyond 3500 rpm. Is this an obvious rebuild top to bottom?? Just want to know other opinions before I make an adjusted offer for the RUST FREE 84K shell. Had a deal in place for $2750 before I inspected the car this weekend, frame rails are slightly bent same direction in front of the front suspension. TIA for any replies, Dale Malcolm.
  14. I will call today, when I talked to (Greg?) after receiveing the S10 manual I made sure he knew what I ordered by giving him the invoice # and he said he would straighten it out so I'll just call back today and I'm sure they will be here midweek. Not trying to make them look bad I just wanted the books as fast as I could get them like jakeshoe said. bschlitz---I am on N. 108th St midway between Maple and Fort. I was wondering if anyone in Nebraska had tried a swap and now I see that you may be well on your way. Willl be picking my 280z up in Minnesota as soon as it rains and washes some salt away, can' hardly wait. Dale M.
  15. I received 1 yesterday but I ordered 2 books for datsun swap (my Dad wants one) and 1 tbi/tpi book and I receive only 1 datsun manual?? Last week I received an S-10 manual that I never ordered!!! Good information in the book but next time I will order through summit!!!
  16. (V-8) datsun manuals are not in stock at this time, they told me they would have some within a week--waiting on proof to come back from printing company and then printing run. Talked to them today. TPI/TBI are in stock.
