I'll take ya up on that lil bet. Lol Well,my friend came thru and nothing new to report. Starting to think the crank angle sensor is bad. Been looking for a used distributor with no luck. Found a remaned one on EBay or 177.00 but now my other buddy who owns his own shop has told me to hold off yet. He wants to makes sure I'm on the right path. He feels the same way as I about throwing money at a problem. It's not always the answer. And if it saves me 200.00,I'LL WAIT! Lol The box under the dash you speak of,I have no clue on either. Pic maybe? My prob is,I get no signal to the ignitor from the ecu. I have 2 ecu's and 2 harnesses and I have the same problem with both. Sooooo,I'm sure it a engine part bad,not either of the ecu's or harnesses. If you'd like, you can call/text me and we could talk about it more? 414-202-0318. My name is Shawn. I also have family in Cali. Inglewood to be exact and a friend in Long Beach. I usually come there atleast once a year for the Long Beach Grand Prix. Missed last year. Next year I may have to miss also. Depends on this dam project! Lol Have a friend that lives about 15mins from Z Specialtys in Washington also. He is known on the forums as,Z Man of Washington. Oliver is great with Z's but too busy to sit on the phone. Well, hope to hear from ya soon. Good luck with your swap also!!!! Phone is always on so don't be shy!! Lol

No prob and thank you very much for the update. I have a friend on his way over now. He used to be an automotive electrical electrician. Gonna see if he can help at all. He also builds cars still, but he got outta the dealership line of work as I did myself. We're gonna go over everything and maybe he can tell if I have a bad part. Still didn't do the HEI swap, but it will be done either way. Today was a lucky day off for me and also lucky, that my friend happens to be off also!!! Maybe a sign of good things to come!? Like spark? Lol I will def be updating again, after we're done today again. Wish me luck! This swap has been over a year long project now! Losing faith and ambition! First time in like 2 weeks that I'm even gonna touch it!!!! If I didn't have soooo much money into it I'd sell it!

Just a quick update and check in... A week and a half ago,my phone was stolen off a jobsite and I have not had a chance or the money to work on the ZX.. I did go over all my wiring again and double checked it all and tried starting it again and same deal. No spark (at coil or plugs) and/or no "pulse" in the signal wire going to the ignitor.. TOTALLY OUTTA IDEAS... I did just see an ignitor on Ebay for 65.00 outta a junked 81 turbo... Def gonna try the HEI ignitor swap thou!! 24.95 at Advanced Auto.. Anyways, just wanted to update and share my bad news.. Phone was replaced now and I will def be in better shape soon.. As in,being able to get back to my baby.. Lol Any other ideas or thoughts, please, please mention them.. I'm more then willing to try just about anything now.. Like I mention before in the earlier posts, its been over a year now for my swap.... Totally not having fun anymore... Besides the spark issue, all I have is a few silicon couplers to get yet to finish the intercooler build of the project and thats it!!!! Everything else is new on the car now.. Shocks, springs, sway bars, poly everywhere, bearings, tires, etc!!! I have about 7k in recepits for the other parts.. I did everything in less time then JUST the engine swap!! That includes, stripping and painting every single part hat I took off the car!!! Only part UNDER the car I havent changed yet is the rear diff and half shafts!!! Yeap,EVERYTHING UNDER the car is new or refinished... Soon the rear E-Brake cable will be also.. AFTER I GET THE DAM THING TO START!! Lol ok,ok,ok... I know,Im just rambling now but,I know some of you guys/girls knows EXACTLY how I feel!! As I said,ANY info you might have, please speak your mind.. I've done tons of testing and searching and reading over the past year or so now... A bit of stupidity and over informed I am to say the least.. Thanks everyone to have have posted so far!!!! Means alot to know other people have had my same issues and have worked thru them..

WHEW!!!!! Lol As I wipe my brow.. Lol And yes sir! Will have it done very shortly... Got a floor to start now, customer called last night to start a duplex. I do Hardwood Floors for a living. So,by the end of the week I should have it in and a report for everyone. Thanks for that link again also. I'll report back as soon as I get it in and installed.
-
Thanks glup...Scumbag... Lol I am def not familiar with that part at all. Now I will be reading AGAIN about another tucked away part? Lol Where's the part located and is this something that plugs into the EFI harness? I have an 83 ECU and either an 82 or 83 harness. And yes,the engine is an 83.. Never heard or came across an,"Injector Drive Resistor" yet. Thanks again for pointing something out. Didn't make it to the store today to grab the HEI ignitor but I DEF WILL TOMOR!
-
Thanks again, and I will DEFINITELY install the HEI before doing anything else besides, reading and checking everything again. And again after that. Lol
-
So,I'm gonna install the HEI Ignitor from an 1980 Chevette and see what happens today. Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe a way to test or check the CAS inside the distributor? Been reading/searching again for 2 days and still outta ideas. Found remanned Distributor from NAPA for 283.00!? EBay has one also for 260.00! Any other way to check it before dropping another 300.00?? I'm almost 2k into this engine now. Shoulda just went with a carb'd V-8!!!!

Thank you for that link. I read a post sometime ago about that kind of swap but couldn't find it recently actually. Was def thinking of trying that cause of the price difference! And I'm am a member of Hybridz and Zcar so I (hopefully) shouldn't have a problem viewing them. I have ran into a bunch of old posts and links that are dead now also. :/ Thank you for the speedy responce also.. I was at Road America yesterday for the Le Mans race and we took my friends drop top S4. Needless to say,we found plenty of ppl to play with to and from the track. Which is about 50mins from my house. And after looking at my build, playing there and back,it lit my fire to the max! I wanna get this started at all costs!!! Lol Plus,I think I can def take my friends S4. And when I say all costs,I don't mean that literally.. I mean as in work, study, labor, time spent, well before throwing money at it. I swear, some of you and myself also, should have PhD's in Datsuns!!! Then again, having too much knowledge is/can be confusing as f+"*. Lol

Hello once again fellow Datsun enthusiasts.... I have been studying and reading for months now and still I can not get my ZXT to ZX to start! I am pretty positive I have all the wiring correctly wired up now but I can not get any spark? I have done all the power tests with a multimeter and I have power in all the right spots. My problem now is,I can't get spark? I hear the fuel pump kick in and run for the 5 secs,I also have the green LED light lit on the ECU,I have 12 volts at the coil,CAS,and everywhere else. I smell gas when trying to start it but I get no spark out of the coil or any of the plugs? Starting to think I was sold a bad ignitor or I have a bad distributor/CAS? Don't have the oscillator tool to test the if their bad. Another head stratcher is,I don't have any kind of "pluse" coming from the signal wire to the ignitor? When I rebuilt the engine after I bought it,it was missing the TPS and the CHTS to begin with so I bought a new CHTS and used my brand new TPS off my N/A motor. Airflow meter and ignitor were bought off members here. Along with my harness. Which was in better shape then the other ZXT harness I had. I have read, downloaded the FSM and I also have a Hyanes manual. I have been going over everything for over a month and a half and still can't get it started. It just turns over and gets fuel but no spark to start it. I don't wanna buy a new CAS, or igniter cause their 200 and 300 a pc. Yes I'm asking for help! Lol I'm all searched out and more then confused by all the info I learned over the past 3 1/2 months now! I'm leaning towards, bad parts or something super simple that I keep over looking!? And the last thing,I also can not get the RPM gauge to work? It def worked before the swap. I can't get the dash gauge to work or my Apexi RSM to get any kind of tach action? I'm pretty sure I found the tach wiring with the resistor box it plugs into but no matter how I wire it,no RPM actionm even ran a new wire and also tried the factory wire in the N/A harness and still nothing? Any answers, questions, suggestions and/or ideas will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! This has been a yr long swap project now! ;( I've done swaps in Honda's and VW's and the likes and those were pretty ez for the most part. This one is killing me and its MY CAR! Lol Thanks for all the help so far everyone with finding parts, sellin me parts and helping me with this project! Hybridz is def worth the donations!!! Hope to hear from all you swap experienced owners... Your. Input will be noted, and saved and greatly appreciated!!! Thanks again and in advance!!!

Z Specialties.com He sells 2 different alt upgrades for Z and ZX's. Both bolt in,very minor wiring has to be done but def super duper ez. Comes with instructions and everything needed. One alt is 105amp (which is the one I have) and the other one is 120amp. Needs a special (stronger) belt which he sells also. Belt is like 7 bucks. I bought 2 so I had a spare on hand. And I just had my factory alt rebuilt at a shop here and they converted it from the factory 60amp to a 160amp for 85.00 It was cheap enough and I wanted a spare for this road trip I'm planning this summer. Hope this helps.

I have no idea that the harness was even hacked. That's the way I received it for the guy I bought it from. Is there anyway to salvage the harness I have? Or should I start looking for another harness? FricFrac,I see you sell fixed/modded harnesses? Any chance you have an 83 harness,IN GOOD SHAPE,you wanna sell me? Lol My Bday is fast approaching and I want my ZXT on it. Lol Got lil under 2 weeks to go. Got the engine built last night, just need injectors,(which are on hold) my Derale oil cooler and now,A NEW 83 HARNESS. Wanna get the harness ordered by this Friday,so any help would be great. I stopped on the wiring once I heard, why is your harness all hacked up? Lol No sense working with crap! Lol And,how bout a lil trade deal FricFrac.. I'll buy a harness and also send you mine if you wanna work something out? Or do you fix harnesses? If so,whats the turn around time? I'm kinda pressed for time at the moment.

Photobucket pics of wiring problem I'm having. May have to take more cause I think Photobucket really made the pics look bad. They were in HD but,def don't look like it now. http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/Hi_Def414/IMAG0585.jpg http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/Hi_Def414/IMAG0594.jpg http://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh505/Hi_Def414/IMAG0591.jpg If you need more, let me know and I will either take more as asked or give ya the info to Photobucket to all of what I have there already. Which is 12 different pics of this wiring issue. Thank you for responding and sharing your knowledge and time to help me out. My Bday is next month on the 6st and I'm def wanting to drive my toy!!! Exspecially now. It's turbo'd with a rebuilt engine. And nevermind. I just looked and followed the link and the pics still look great. Hope it helps you guys/girls so you can in turn help me. Lol Thanks again. This one may get you to my album.. Photobucket. On it! Got some nice pics of the prob wires. Different angles and should be totally clear and easy to see. I was hoping for help on the pic uploaded also,so thank you very much already.. Posting now. As soon as I figure out Photobucket.
-
Totally forgot to mention,I did not receive the top to the turbo fusible links.. Sorry bout that. Althou, the links are wired correctly per the FSM.. Haynes doesn't show it as well. But from the bottom side of the links is where the trouble wires are.
-
Yes,I've searched and have found WAY TOO MUCH info!!! Lol And with all the discoveries, and sidetracked info and links,I have still NOT found what I'm looking for. After WEEKS of reading,I'm giving up.. The prob I'm having is,figuring out how to wire the fusible links into the 79 main harness by the battery.. I have some of it wired cause its pretty ez to color match and gauge a few of them. Where I am now stuck is,I have a white,(larger gauge) wire and a white with red strip,(smaller gauge)wire coming from the 79 main harness by the battery, and a white wire coming from the fusible link and a black wire from the fusible link also.. So what do I hook the 79 main harness wires too and same with the link wires? I tried uploading pics but it says there to big. Pics are on my phone and I don't have a pc right now. :/ I do have like 7 pics I just took tonight. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Pics of someone's fusible link swapped/wired in would be great!! Following the wiring in the FSM and haynes is soooo confusing to me. This is my first TURBO swap and its def not as ez as an N/A swap.. :/ I was enjoying it till now. Been tryin to get this done and searching for weeks!! . Once again, thanks to anyone and everyone for responding and/or helping/suggesting!!! I def need and want your help..

I have Techno Toy Tuning RCA's on a 79 ZX. Tokico Blues and Tokico springs. Stock/factory American racing snowflake wheels and my ball joints have zerk fittings. The zerk fittings have rubbed off! Lol I am buying another new pair that are sealed. Then it'll JUST clear.

Farthest driven,Longest road trip anyone's done?
Hi Def replied to Hi Def's topic in S130 Series - 280ZX
Omg... They look sooo nice.. Don't know how I'm gonna do it,but I gotta have those! Fog lights too. Maybe it'll get busy at work for a week or 2. Def don't wanna put off moving. Lol -

NO CHAINS during a snowstorm in a pass!? Brave, brave man. Lol Now that is something I def wouldn't try. I've been through Stevens Pass in Washington, and they'll stop and FORCE everyone traveling thru the pass to put chains on. Even 4x4 without studs. We were on studded tires and 4x4 even then,at very slow speeds, white knuckled driving. Wow Phil... 500+ miles on a tank... Now that's some mpg!!! Lol I actually didn't really even think of gas mileage yet. I do remember when I first bought the ZX a few years back and was searching forums and read, the ZX's were averaging like 27-ish mpg.. Now its turbo'd thou, wrong size tires,(on purpose)195/60/14 and not driving straight thru. Making a road trip outta it and stopping to see the sites and attractions. Mt. Rush, some auto museum,(can't remember the name off hand),Strugis, etc. I have done the trip a cpl times for work and visiting, but in much newer and rental cars and didn't sight-see. I've lived in Clearwater,FL for a year, and have been to the Falls,New Hampshire,Jersey,Pittsburgh,Iowa,Minneapolis,Chicago,Long Beach,Englewood, and Seattle.. Wow,I've been a lot of places. Never wrote them out before. Lol And all of a sudden, your trailer idea sounds pretty good Tony. Lol But,I still don't wanna tow a trailer. Only parts I haven't rebuilt or replaced was the tranny and rear diff. I did put new front and rear seals in the tranny. Output shafts. Rear diff was good but replaced the front and side seals for good measure. And thank you Dapper for stepping in. Very nice lights. Def on my want list. Have to try and work those puppies into the budget thou. I see you have fog lights also? I'm totally just asking about those. Gonna try and fit the headlights into the budget as is,I'm sure to have a whole kit is outta my reach at the moment. But the next ZX I have lined up would def look good with them. Also Dapper, what are the 2 wattages offered. 55w is the brighter you offer? Is there an up charge for those? Anymore comparison pics of the 2 besides the one on your site? Once again, thanks everyone for the stories and ideas.. My Co-pilot has a really nice camera and laptop.. Pics will DEF be uploaded. Hoping to have it on the road in the next 3 weeks. Roadtrip between June and July. We'er both gear heads pretty much,so everything automotive along the way will get attention. -
Farthest driven,Longest road trip anyone's done?
Hi Def replied to Hi Def's topic in S130 Series - 280ZX
Holy sit Tony... You dam sure have some miles logged in a Z/ZX. Lol Thank you very much for that well written responce! Def makes me feel a bit more at ease about this move. Def NOT towing a trailer, that's for sure. Plus it would kill the mountain pass runs. Just my 2 smaller tool boxes, spare alt(have a Zspecialties 105 amp in car),factory spare tire, air compressor/jump box,etc.... And Tony, why wouldn't ya go over 65 in Wisconsin?? Lol Trust me,I'm sure I know why.. Come on vacation, leave on probation is what we say. Lol And where can I find that HI/LOW relay at? I'm sure there's a write up on that somewhere here? Looks like I'll def be ordering that Hi current headlight wiring upgrade now. I could do without the driving/fog lights also. Those were just a thought. I def like those Dapperlighting headlights. Seem nice and clear bright. Still a bit pricey thou. Still looking into them yet. Just saving up for the last of the parts I need to finish the swap. Injectors, the oil cooler, blow off valve, and maybe a intercooler. Althou, few of those parts are just for being nice to the turbo. Nothing wrong in being nice and supportive to the turbo.. I If I have the time,I may try the CRX seat swap I read about on xenons.com's site. My seats are shot to say the least. Lol Steering wheel is def getting swapped out also. Ugly and not very comfortable. Lol This chassis as I mentioned will be raped once the next one is ready when I get there,so no body work is being done. Spray foamed some areas (unseen ofcourse) and that helped a ton in road noise! I'd even say,its a bit stiffer too. S I'm sure its not the best idea, but it helped and worked in this case. Lol Not even a squeak anywhere. Now I just wish the weatherstripping was that ez to fix!!!! Doing the hatch, cause its cheap and I don't wanna drift asleep. Lol It's leaked since day one,but once again, never drove it this far or long. Tail and hatch seals forsure! Lol Well, still looking to hear about your Datsun road trips.. Def feels good to see that ppl drive their Z/ZX's on long trips. I always heard small cars suck on road trips.. I always get mad, cause I love the small cars. Lol Always have,Always will! Lol Thanks for all the responded so far. Keep'em coming. -
Farthest driven,Longest road trip anyone's done?
Hi Def replied to Hi Def's topic in S130 Series - 280ZX
Good to hear. And yeah, that's a hella long ride there! Lol I've done a bunch of road trips but never in an older car. Hearing the successful stories is def reassuring to say the least. I do have some road miles on the other parts. About 1,500 at most before doing the swap. So,I'm fairly confident that everything is good order so far. As ya said, some things are definitely unforseeable thou. Thinking about upgrading the headlights yet and adding some driving lights. Driving thru the mid-west farm lands is pretty dark. Been there, done that. Found some LED headlights but,Omg.... 650? I like the Hi Def-ability of them but dam! Lol I kinda don't trust the universal HID headlight kits either. Never seen them in person. Exspecially where it would matter, like out in the middle of bfe.. Hella seems to be the only alternative.? Thanks for you responce also. Must appreciated. -
Once I get my ZXT swap done,I'm moving and driving it to Seattle from Milwaukee.. It's almost 2k miles on the head, one way. Luckily I have a friend who wants to do the road trip,so I atleast have a co-pilot. I have re-done almost everything drivetrain wise. All new suspension. Tokico Blues, springs, poly everything,MSA sway bar kit, clutch kit,all wheel bearings, shifter bushings, aluminum radiator, elec fan, tires, exhaust, fuel injectors, overhauled turbo L28ET,full fluids, brakes, stainless lines, slave cly, master slave, steering rack bushings, coupler,Derale oil cooler with elec fan,all dash, front, tail lights, steering wheel, and few parts that I'm sure I'm missing. Lol Thinking I'm pretty well set reliably for the trip. Lol Ofcourse,I'll be bringing my tool box and spare parts. Not my first road trip, but def the farthest I've ever driven it!!! Lol What's the farthest anyone here has driven their ZX? Anything I've missed that I should maybe put on the "To Do List" yet? Thanks for any and all responces.

Got the broken bolt out. And no Tony, after getting the head off,it was above the deck. Lucky me. Ordering the NEW head bolts in a cpl days along with a new headgasket! Lol I do have to get the heat shield bolts extracted yet thou. Either that or wrap the manifold? I'm gonna end up driving the car from Wisconsin to Seattle this summer. 1,995 miles to be exact. Lol Thanks everyone for responding, advising, and supporting me. Def will NOT cut a corner again. Lol

FricFrac, where did you find those ARP's for 150.? Def interested in those. As the Nissan bolts are 90.00. And Bloz,if you re-use the factory bolts, are ARP's worth the xtra 50? What do you guys think about ARP's? I'm not doing a major build or anything, but def may do some turbo, fuel, ecu upgrades in the future... If I had to name a HP limit,I'd have to say like 300-350ish... Anything more then that,I'd prob build something else.. Also, what does anyone thing about the metal headgaskets? Another pricey option I see!!!
