Clutch hose AN size confusion
graphicjunkie replied to Rod in NC's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Sorry, I didn't translate that part of the conversation correctly. When she asked me about pressure rating, I told her that it was for the clutch master/slave assembly which was 3/4". I was hoping that would answer her question on pressure. I hate this because I've never had to deal with hydraulics and really feel caught with my pants down here. -
Clutch hose AN size confusion
graphicjunkie replied to Rod in NC's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I used this recipe here (THANKS!) and bought the slave, the conversion fittings, the master... But when I called the local hydraulic shop for the hose, they treated me like I was speaking Greek. They had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the -3 and so on. I told them it was 3/4" in size, but they needed to know if it was JIC or a slew of other acronyms. My kit just showed up from JTR, to include the swap guide and the TPI book. I'm hoping that I can read through it and it will answer some of these questions as well. -
Tilton 7/8" "???
graphicjunkie replied to lgoodson@pacbell.net's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
scanned back through this whole thread...didn't see anything about the adapters. What are those? -
Agreed. That's why I did it. I could have gotten a used radiator for MUCH cheaper. But in the end, if it fails...not so cheap. I'm getting really close to execution time. Just a few more pieces to the puzzle. Thanks so much for the advice.

Tilton 7/8" "???
graphicjunkie replied to lgoodson@pacbell.net's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
So with an LT1 going to a T56, would this be the right part? http://www.jegs.com/i/Tilton/454/75-875U/10002/-1 It says that it has a 1.1" stroke. That sounds too short to me. No? Thanks. -
Yea, after I posted that, I started to dig into this forum, as I don't spend as much time here as I do the V8Z forum. I just got done watching a video and reading a couple of other threads. Was going to come back here and post a 'never mind'...but you beat me. Here's what I am about to go buy... Complete front & rear suspensions & brakes with Eibach performance rate coil springs, kyb struts, suspension techniqes THICK anti roll bars (almost double the size of the stock ones), all those parts were on a 78z for just over 6 months. Included extras are rear diff. for a 5 speed w/new isolater, rebuilt 1/2 shafts, rebuilt drive shaft, steering rack, moustache bar w/urethane mounts. $350! I'm not really a drag racer, because the cost to race around here anymore is REDICULOUS! Almost $100 a day, and you MIGHT get in three runs.... I'll definately look into welding the cross pin if that's a fail point. Thanks for the input!
-
I've got a lead on a 78 280Z rear differential. And I've read where the R200's are tough, checked the wiki from the board member to validate that it really would be a R200 not an R180... But I pretty much just want to hear lamens terms tell me that if I buy this R200, I can put up to 500ftlbs to it and it will handle it. Because I haven't seen any real threshold numbers for torque. Can someone humor me here and confirm what I have read, or correct me and save me the money? Thanks!
-
thanks for the input...I just bit the bullet and got the JTR kit. V8 kit, radiator, mounts, fittings, T's...and manuals. Large chunk of my go fast money, but sounds like it's going to save head aches down the road. Thanks and I'll keep this thread handy for that water pump info.
-
Great info. I guess I'll just plan on getting the kit. THANKS!
-
most specifically, this one.. Gmc Pickup Ck Sierra Pick Truck Ck 1500 96-1996 Radiator 7.4 V8 I would expect a 7.4L application would be big enough to keep mine cool, but what about cooling direction? Does that matter? I know the LT1 is backwards, but I dont know the ups and downs about that.
-
I'm going to be picking up the JR kit and book here real soon which I know covers cooling in great detail. But I've got a lead on a a few good V8 radiators that I don't want to miss out on if the right application is available. Was wondering if someone could tell me what to look out for? Possible key makes and years? Avoid XYZ at all costs....that kind of stuff. LT1 engine.... should be good for approx. 500hp... Thanks!

transmission question...
graphicjunkie replied to graphicjunkie's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I was surfing craigslist yesterday and came across an ad for a T56/LT1 combo. Just for giggles, I wrote the guy and asked him if he would be interested in selling just the complete transmission. At first, he said no, but he had another T56 that needed to be reassembled for $600 (let me know if any of you are looking for one.) I told him no thanks, I was looking for a complete unit. He was a little weary, too many people saying they wanted this or that, and not coming up with cash. So I took a picture of me holding the cash and sent it to him saying I could come pick up today if it meant anything to him. Long story short, he wanted $1200, but in the end....For $1000, not only did I get a T56 transmission... I got a VIPER T56 good for 550ftlbs, LT1 bell housing, new racing clutch complete with pressure plate, performance lightened flywheel, and shifter.... SO!! No more worries about matching up to the !@#!%!% block, OR torque capacities!! As soon as I get the engine work done, it's a full bolt on. Just have to get the slave set up for hydrolics! I'm hyped!! -
transmission question...
graphicjunkie replied to graphicjunkie's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Yea, advanceadapters is the first place I actually tried. Same answer. TKO... Well, I haven't been able to find much in the lines of the TKO. Also, I've heard from a couple of the places I've went that in the long run, you can build the T5 better, and have more options available. I don't know. I'm rethinking the level of the build to be honest. With the weight of these cars, 510ftlbs is pretty insane. I don't plan on taking it to the drag strip much, other than after I've been able to get to know the car a little, get some time slips so I know what it can do. Other than that, I just want a sweet hot rod. So here is what my current thoughts are. Since I've already got the 20 over flat top pistons, tear the engine down and have them put in. I'm going to go big on the cam shaft. I want a nice lope to the engine. Everyone says don't go big because there is no power off the line. Well, how much do we need in these light cars to be quick off the line? Also, I figured it might help in the launches anyway. Get the car moving, and then come unglued!! I've got the intake man, and heads that are ported/polished huge to match. roller rockers, pistons. Need to get the 58MM throttle body, cam.... I figure if the guy I bought all this engine stuff from, who had it on stock lower internals, put down 360rwhp on a smaller cam, that if I get it bored 20 over and put in a bigger cam, I should see maybe 370? Which is plenty in that little car, and if I get into a pinch, I've got my 100shot nos to fall back on. anyway. Thanks for the info. I'm going to keep a look out for either a TKO or a T5. Sounds like either one will work in the end. -
transmission question...
graphicjunkie replied to graphicjunkie's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Ok, thanks for the advice. Although I'm screwed at this point, I thought I would post my findings for future poor bastards... McLeod doesn't have any kind of adapter for putting a T45 to anything. No one does. Because the T45 has an integrated bell housing... They put me in touch with Keisler, who has their OWN complete T45 trans with a custom BH that mounts to the LT1. But for some stupid reason, they won't sell the integrated bell housing replacement unit by it's self. They will only sell the transmission as a whole. They put me in touch with Astro Performance. This was the best connection I got. I spoke to Tony there and he told me that I need to really get ahold of a T5 because they now have a very cheap upgrade for the T5's, that makes them bullet proof to 500 ft lbs. Which about made me cry, because that is what I started out with, and sold because it was too 'wimpy' and would never hold up. He also explained to me that the T45, however being a great transmission, is a bad choice because you can only get the parts from the OE dealerships...IE, $$$. There are no aftermarket upgrades or options for them. So I hope anyone else trying to work this stumbles on this thread before they begin and it saves them some gray hair. -
transmission question...
graphicjunkie replied to graphicjunkie's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Thanks! I'll check with them. -
Ok, I'm really getting frustrated and need some guidance. I'm building a HO 383, and will be putting down high 400HP/TQ numbers. I've been trying to gather all my pieces and parts. I got a good deal on a T5 out of an 85 mustang. Come to find out that it really won't hold the power. So I found a Tremec T5 out of a 1995 Cobra. Or so the guy thought. Turns out the transmission is a T45. which from tremec's site, is actually better, as it has a higher torque rating and smoother shifting characteristics. Now the problems....I have the bell housing and everything. But Im told that it won't bolt up. So searching for some kind of conversion kit, it is sounding like i'm up the creek without a conversion kit. So can someone here with some hopeful solid experience in this matter either a) Tell me where I can get a conversion kit or plate for a T45 transmission to a 1995 SBC block? Tell me what transmission will actually work for this application. --I don't want automatic if I can help it. If I have to go automatic, I have a 4L60 (not the 'E' model), will that bolt up if I need to use it for now? Thanks.
-
I picked up a T5 for my car, decided I didn't want to put in the 4L60 after all... But the car came with a stock 5spd transmission. I've been searching for quite a while and can't fine any kind of real technical data about the 5spd. I'm only curious, as I'm going to sell it anyway. But does anyone know a good url for learning about the specs and thresholds of this trans? Thanks. W.

Hey thanks for the link, I appreciate it. I have an LT1 engine, but it's from a Buick Roadmaster. Thought that I should be here instead, oh well..
-
Ok, so I've been searching for the past 15 minutes and thought I would come up with SOMETHING. But all the threads I find are irrelevant. I've been gathering parts for the past year, and I'm FINALLY about to the point of the execution phase! I remember from when I first signed up here, that someone / somewhere sold motor mounts for our cars specifically or V8 transplants. I need to look into getting these pretty quick. Can someone tell me where this place was? Thanks.

couple of questions.

Thank you Grumpy. Looks like some great information there. Now raises another question I have to investigate. The pros/cons between an IRS and solid axle. Thanks again!! -
couple of questions.
graphicjunkie replied to graphicjunkie's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Well first off, nice response. Thanks! Even though I completely understand the point being made, you should look up the word etiquette in the dictionary. Or maybe tact. Ahh....there's that search function again. LOL. C'mon now. I have actually been doing searches all morning about transmissions and rear ends and such. Anything trying to get a hit on what I'm looking for. Sorry if I didn't specify that. You would be amazed at how many threads there are on here pertaining to minor details....yet I didn't come across anything solid to get me started. All I've been able to find is people ranting and raving about the T-5 vs the T56....gas economy, cruise RPM's, weight and all that. It seams that every thread I find with the word rear end in it, only talks about gear ratios and transmissions. Literally giving me next to nothing along the lines of useful base information. I don't care about gear ratios at this point, because I still am not sure what rear end to use. I'll worry about the ratios after I figure out what model line to go with. I'm just trying to find out a real solid rear end that's been tested and used by high output Z's. As well as to find out if there is major fab involved, or if it's a pretty simple process...ya know, what am I facing? -
I'm getting ready to do my V8 swap. Got all the donor gear. But my question is, what are you all using for rear ends. My plans will have the car putting down over 500. I know that the factory rear end won't handle that. What rear ends are you all using, and does it require a lot of fabrication? Or is there a bolt on solution? I'm going to be using an automatic transmission (4L60) to start with after the basic engine swap (92 LT1) mated to a slap shifter. I eventually will probably go with an aftermarket race tranny. But I don't have much of any knowledge of rear ends. Thanks.

Still waiting to start my project.

naw...I'm doing an LT1 transplant. No need for any of these parts at all. But thanks for the advice...good advice. -

graphicjunkie replied to graphicjunkie's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Well, I'm still "steaming fresh" when it comes to the Z car stuff...I don't even know what SU's means....or Flat tops... LOL! dang! -
I have been patiently waiting to finish a couple other projects before being able to dive into my 260Z project... Time is drawing near. THANK GOD, cause I'm going nuts! But I was wondering....IF the engine in this car is the stock engine, which I don't know, L24?, is it worth anything, or one of those undesired? I don't know if it runs, as the engine is not fully installed in the car. But we tested it and it does rotate. I won't be using the stock engine or transmission, so I want to try and unload them to help the cause a little. Just wanting to know if I should bother trying to sell them, or save myself the time and haul to the scrap yard. Thanks.
