  1. I better clear the rod thing up before it gets out of hand.

A customer has run his totally stock internal RIPS RB30 bottom end to 900-1000hp and then had a ring land crack, not sure if it was tuning or just bad luck but it was run at 750-800hp for a long time before he decided to wind it up and find some limits.

However, my 240z motor has forged pistons and billet I beam rods.

The block, crank, cradle, mains bolts etc are all stock though.

I assure you its not just a matter of chucking some pistons and rods into a stock RB30 bottom end and getting it to live at 1300hp and 9500-10,000 rpm though, there's ALOT more to it but I'll probably die with that info.

  2. Man Rob, It's incredible that those pistons are taking that kind of pounding from the boost/rpm and haven't failed. I'll bet when you tear it down, the ring groves have opened way up and the rings are just floppin' LOL.

I find it quite amasing its still holding together as well, the bottom end is so basic its not funny.

Just before the 8.16 and the 8.05 we put in its first set of spark plugs since the motor was first built over 18 months ago!!

Its had 3 or 4 oil changes and the motor doesn't breath, use oil or show any signs of getting tired.

We run it to 9500rpm regularly but havn't been over 27/28psi on the strip or 29/30psi on the dyno but thats about to change.

We have just finished upgrading the fuel system to 2100hp capable and we have some 1600cc injectors to replace the 1000cc injectors we've always had.

We intend to really chuck some boost at it from about 50 meters out cause on a good run I sometimes have it under control by then, lol.

We can't add much more off the line as the car is really at its limit but if we really get stuck into it as soon as we can, I'm sure 7s and 175+ will come before long still on petrol.

  3. Rob, wheelbase for a 2+2 is 2605mm; 300mm longer than a 2 seater and unfortunately not available in a convertible. While we are here, I might as well post a pic of my 240Z as it is now....

Thanks for the info, so there are no convertable models with a wheelbase longer than the 240z's 2305mm?

    Rob

  4. Hi, Here's my 1974 2+2, was brought in from Australia, so thankfully it was rust free. I drove it for a few months and then some work on the car, exterior and engine, still have to do the interior...................

    Jay.

I know it may seem a silly question but does anyone know the wheelbase of this model (260z 2+2 right???) and did they ever come in a convertible?

Its a long story but I'm trying to find the longest wheelbase convertible in the 240/260 basic shape.

  5. The exhaust stud pattern on the 26 head is different to all other RBs so you can't just bolt 26 manifolds onto a 20 or 25 head I'm afraid.

We do an adapter kit which allows you to put the twin turbo manifolds onto a 20 or 25, around usd250 for the whole kit, e-mail me if your interested.

  6. And yes hasn't that brand caused a bit of stir - even made the national news the other day - so I am sure that will bring you some extra exposure at the next big meet at Meremere :icon14:

Yeah, just the usual goodie 2 shoes complaining about the name of the drink.

I don't see what the fuss is about cause "coke" is just short for coca cola which use to actually have cocaine in it and if these goodie 2 shoes people actually thought about it, all they are doing is giving the distributors/promoters of the drink alot of free advertising, they'll sell more for sure,

For me, I deal with a company who helps me race, I don't have a problem with the name and I do like the drink, simple as that.

  7. What a day!! Damn hot, damn slippery and a few nasty moments.

Taupo dragstrip is the back straight of a circuit and there's a sand trap for another courner right beside the back straight, guess which way the wind was blowing?

Arrived at the track, set up our pit garage, all was looking good, for the 1st round of qualifying we turned the boost down and set it soft off the line and what a ride..........the track has a bump at about 50 meters out which upsets alot of cars and it got me every time sending me right towards the center line into the sand, nice.

Check out the shift light in top gear:

Another couple of qualifying runs from different angles:

Leaving with only 4000rpm and 1 bar boost:

Then the organisers decided that because there wasn't alot of Pro Import guys there they'd chuck us all in the supercharged outlaw class (blown alky door cars, blown 800kg altereds and the full tube comp cars (except the 6 second top door slammers)) nervous.gif and then make everyone run DYO (Dial your own) chairshot.gif I hate DYO, lol.

Obviously everyone was having traction problems as I qualified No2 overall (V8s and Jappers) but in DYO racing being quick is not usually a good thing as the slower guys can usually run more consistant and closer to their dial in time.

We decided a PB was not on the cards so might as well be gentle off the line and detune the top end boost to try and keep traction.

I dialed in at 8.45 but the dreded 50 meter bump still got me, listen to the rpm fluctuate in this video against a Dodge who had a 3.5 second head start, I backed out a couple of times, didn't quite catch him but he broke out so I got the win!! biggrin.gif

Here's a view from behind, racing my mate Jason from Cutelli Racing in his circuit RB30 R32, the dreded 50 meter bump gets me again!! You can even hear the tyres churp on the bump ffs.

Jason did well holding his 700whp+ track car in a straight line and still ran 10s thumbsup.gif

Here's another against a blown V8 chevy, this guy usually runs mid 8s but dialed in at 8.90 so I had to give him a 0.5 second head start......

Here's another against the 10 second RB30 track skyline, very gentle off the line, over to the left about 2 foot and fook all top end boost seemed to be the only way to get a clean pass:

All in all a fun day, ran 7 or 8 times with short breaks in between and no damage done, all set for next weekends twilight meet at Meremere which should be a good one.

    Rob

  8. Basicly...... slippery slippery slippery.

We qualified quickest of all the Pro Imports and Sport Compacts but everyone was sruggling, not one of us ran 7s and some of the guys regularly run in the 7s so I felt ok with the times all things considered.

60fts were well down but I managed a 8.23 @ 168.5mph spinning hard for the last 150 meters or so, it got sideways but I kept in it and managed to keep it together, just.

The guy who ran in the same lane as me, straight after me, hit the same crap at 1/2 track and crashed real bad, rolled 4 or 5 times then end for end 2 or 3 times. http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=ojEKD6L0Hdc&NR=1

Here's a couple of vids, 9500-10,000 rpm during the burnout.

    http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=G6qtA0_kQUc

Next weekend we are at a high altitude race circuit where they use the back straight for drags, its been OK in the past so hopefully I can better the 8.22 and get 170+mph

    Rob

  9. So that is a goal get the same time or better on the NZ tracks - then if you go to Oz you will be in for a real sweet time

    Agreed.

The way I see it is if I can improve and run the same sort of times as Glen Suckling and if I'm really on form, the same sort of times as Reece at Meremere on the same day, it has to be a sign of a 7.70-7.80 car in Aussie.

Reece seems to be able to pull off high 7s reasonably regularly at Meremere but it looks like the harder he tries to go quicker, the slower he gets as it gets out of shape and then its usually around a 8.2 to 8.5.

Glen ran mid 8s most of the day last time out but did get a best of 8.1.

If I can get regular and reliable 8.0s - 8.1s at Meremere I should actually stand a reasonable chance in competition against those 2.

A dream of mine would be having a real good side by side with Reece and actually winning.

    Rob

  10. Is it running a 26 or a 30? Looks like he has issues with keeping it headed strait... :icon52:

No-one except them really knows the details of the engine but I believe its a 2.8 or there abouts.

They were laying around 1800whp in 4wd last time on the dyno but can't put the power down on our NZ tracks.

The world record they have was done in Australia on a real good strip.

    Rob

  11. Loved the r34 drag car.... did it make any runs???

the white gtr looks like its a handfull

Yeah the Yellow 34 did some runs but was having problems I think, it has a supercharged meth RB30, he;s usually running low 9s.

White GTR is the world record holder at 7.5 and on full power he's knocking on 2000hp,

    Rob

  12. Yeah we lay around 1000-1050whp at 27psi with a 75shot to wake it up.

Not that its a big deal, but would everyone agree that we would now have the quickest 240z in the world, not just street, but overall also? 1 Quik Z is a 260 or 280 right?

The world record for a RB30 powered car is 7.92 so we'll be gunning for that from now on.

Expressions of interest in buying the 240z can be e-mailed to me, we will probably sell it in a couple of months, can be complete or a roller less motor only (all original street gear and original parts included etc)

  13. It sounds to me like your trying to have a rear engined 4wd vehicle as your talking about having 2 diffs??

Everyone else seems to be replying to you as if your wanting rear engine with rear drive only.

If you can be clear about what your trying to do it will make it easier for everyone to throw ideas around,

    Rob

  14. Drag masters is a team event where the jap cars race the V8s.

Here's a couple of my runs

    1st run off the trailer:

and against a blown alky doorslammer:

The Jap team won although I had a NOS solinoid give up after we forgot to turn off the NOS bottle blanket and went way over pressure.

Damn shame as the 8.22 was with very little boost off the line and the peek boost turned down a bit.

I have some good in car footage too, I'll load it up as soon as I work out how to edit the footage on my memory card.

  15. So does that mean the Gates Racing belt that is for sale is nothing more than a money grab? because I've found a bunch of working belts that are not "racing" spec but are proper thickness, pitch, tooth count, and length.

I'm not saying the arn't stronger, or that if you hung a huge weight off of them they wouldn't hold more than a stock one, all I'm saying is, my motor has about the best/strongest head gear you can get, I rev it to 10,000rpm at times with pretty big boost and I put the same stock belt back on from last year and its fine.

I've lifted complete engines with 10 year old RB cam belts, they are pretty damn strong.

When I pull it off at the end of this year I'll measure it to see if it has stretched if your all interested.

Go for the "lable" belt if it makes you feel more comfortable.

    Rob

  16. I've never had a motor give trouble with a stock belt and I run a stock type belt on my street/drag motor, twin springs, high lift, 9500rpm, 1200hp, its been fine and I didn't change it after last season but I spose a new one every 2 years or so would be wise.

I think these aftermarket belts are just another way to get more $$ off ya cause its blue or red and has a nice brand name on it, lol

    Rob
