  1. I am looking for a 20 tooth speedometer pinion (red in color) for my 83 5-speed trany. Would also consider dealing on the same pinion housing if available. Let me know if you have one.
  2. I got my ME degree 36 years ago and the required PE license 4 years after that since I was working on projects which involved public safety. I would also recommend taking the EIT test during your senior year as it is more difficult to do later. The PE license will provide more job opportunities throughout your career. After working in the corporate world for 35 years I decided to take advantage of an early retirement option and go into consulting. It's been a great option for me, setting my own work schedule so I have time to work on the Z, travel etc. Work half as hard and get paid twice as much As a side note my son is now working on his PHD in chemical engineering.
  3. I should have been more specific about the "original" zcars which did not have electrical cut offs for the fuel pump. I believe all the FI cars did have a factory cut off system. The 240Z carbureted cars did not. They were wired for auxiliary electric pumps, but no cut off switch was provided as far as I know. I have been using an inertia switch on my 71 240Z for 2 years and have not had it trip once. Maybe thats because I mounted it within easy reach under the dash . The other advantage over an oil pressure switch is you can prime the carbs just by switching on the ignition for a few seconds before cranking the engine.
  4. It would also be a good time to install an inertia switch or oil pressure cut-off switch for safety reasons. The original zcars did not have any accident safety devices for their electric pumps.
  5. You do take your chances with a salvage yard transmission. They usually have a 30 day return policy if it is bad, but it's still a PIA to return it and pull another trany (if they have one). A couple of things you can check before pulling a used trany is the drain plug which has a magnet built in. If the magnet has pieces of bearings or gear teeth stuck to it, walk away. Once the trany is out of the car, turn the input shaft by hand in each of gears and be sure it is nice and smooth. I just pulled an 83 ZX 5-speed two weeks ago at an Omaha U-Pull yard. Only cost $60 there . I later found it had a weak 3rd gear syncro so I pulled it apart and swapped it with parts from another 5-speed I had laying around. Working good now.
  6. Basically thats right, but some are a little easier than others. The 79 and 80 zx distributors are the easiest in my opinion as everything is built into it. You need the 280 engine mounting plate and some wiring mods may be needed to make the 240z tach work. A search will probably provide more details.
  7. If it was setting outside for 9 months, I would say drain it to be safe. If it was inside it is probably ok. I have been storing my 71 Z inside for more than 9 months at a time for the last 20 years and never had a gas related problem. As far as how to drain it, cant you just siphon it out? I would dispose of it by mixing it with gas for my daily driver unless it is obviously contaminated.
